Advancing Efficiency Of Unstructured Mesh Processing With Localized Data Structures, Guoxi Liu
Advancing Efficiency Of Unstructured Mesh Processing With Localized Data Structures, Guoxi Liu
All Dissertations
Unstructured meshes are widely used to represent complex shapes and data in visualization tasks, such as medical imaging, engineering design, and geometric modeling. However, their unevenly distributed elements make them memory-intensive and time-consuming to process, especially as mesh sizes grow. This research focuses on improving the efficiency of processing large unstructured meshes by reducing memory usage and speeding up computations. This doctoral dissertation introduces three methods to address these challenges. The first approach divides the mesh into smaller partitions and processes it piece-by-piece, reducing memory requirements by up to 10 times. The second approach uses the processor's parallel computing capabilities …
Development Of Mixed O/S-Donor Imidazole Thione Ligands For Trivalent Lanthanide/Actinide Separations, Rhianna Wolsleger
Development Of Mixed O/S-Donor Imidazole Thione Ligands For Trivalent Lanthanide/Actinide Separations, Rhianna Wolsleger
All Dissertations
Separation of lanthanides and actinides is difficult due to their very similar size and charge. Increasing selectivity for actinides over lanthanides is possible by incorporating a softer, more polarizable donor atom into a chelating ligand, since the softer donor atom is capable of greater orbital overlap with the 5f orbitals of the actinides vs the 4f orbitals of the lanthanides. Sulfur-containing imidazole thione chelating ligands have not been investigated for this purpose but possess a resonance structure that puts significant negative charge on the sulfur, enabling it to form strong metal-sulfur bonds compared to other sulfur-containing ligands such as thioethers …

Deciphering And Translating Bioinspired Structures For Engineering Materials Design Via Computational Modeling And Machine Learning, Zhangke Yang
All Dissertations
Nature has evolved extraordinary structural materials—such as nacre, bone, and the mantis shrimp’s dactyl club—that achieve remarkable combinations of strength, toughness, and impact resistance. These properties arise from sophisticated synergies between structure and composition. Inspired by these biological systems, this dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation into bioinspired materials, uncovering fundamental mechanisms and providing guidance on designing materials with superior mechanical properties.
This dissertation begins by examining the "brick-and-mortar" structure of nacre, which informs the design of layered polymer-graphene nanocomposite films. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, I elucidate mechanisms of dynamic wave propagation and energy dissipation in these systems, providing critical …

The Interplay Of Housing Instability And Mathematics During Adolescence: A Retrospective Study Of Black Stem Folx, Sharetta M. W. Bufford
All Dissertations
Few studies have delved into the delicate nuances that impact Black students’ mathematics performance, nor have they paid much attention to the resources students leverage to overcome systems that perpetuate negative stereotypes about Black youth. For decades, studies about Black youth have been explored from a deficit perspective, shedding negative light on circumstances typically beyond the control of those being studied. Even more, some studies have placed blame on parents and parental figures in the lives of Black children for unacceptable school behavior and poor academic progress (Cobb II & Russell, 2015). Black youth have been portrayed as problematic, disruptive, …

All Dissertations
In this dissertation there are a new series of Preyssler polyoxometalate (POM) crystalline solids created using electrochemical potential. It was found that using electrochemical potential, where nucleation and reduction occur simultaneously, was a convenient method for exploratory synthesis creating new crystalline solids in aqueous solution and at room temperature. The general structure feature reveals that Preyssler POM was covalently linked by various metals from the d and f block including Co2+, Ni2+, La3+, Nd3+, Gd3+ and Ho3+ where the POM was reduced by 2 to 4 electrons. The resulting solids …

Impact Of Shear Flow On Marine Biofilms Using Hyperspectral Imaging, Shantanu Mahesh Kore
Impact Of Shear Flow On Marine Biofilms Using Hyperspectral Imaging, Shantanu Mahesh Kore
All Theses
Various microbial communities in marine biofilms cause biofouling on submerged surfaces, posing challenges to marine industries. Despite their ecological and economic importance, biofilms' biomechanical and biochemical responses to hydrodynamic shear stress are insufficiently understood, particularly in dynamic flow conditions. To fill this gap, our study uses an innovative fiber-optic hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system and a supercontinuum laser source to examine marine biofilms' structure, composition, and detachment behavior at different shear stress levels.
To detect spectral and spatial heterogeneity in live biofilms without labeling, we created a custom imaging pipeline that captures reflectance spectra in the 600-850 nm range, targeting microbial …
Reinforcement Learning For High-Dimensional Tradespace Exploration In Multi-Objective Optimization, Aaditya Kothavade
Reinforcement Learning For High-Dimensional Tradespace Exploration In Multi-Objective Optimization, Aaditya Kothavade
All Theses
Engineering design optimization often requires balancing multiple competing objectives while navigating complex, high-dimensional tradespaces. Despite significant advances in tradespace exploration techniques, current methods face critical challenges in efficiently navigating high-dimensional design spaces. As the number of design variables and competing objectives increases, traditional multi-criteria decision-making and optimization methods struggle to explore the vast solution space comprehensively. The curse of dimensionality exacerbates this issue, making it impractical to analyze all possible solutions and effectively identify trade-offs between objectives. Additionally, the computational complexity of high-dimensional spaces further complicates optimization, making exhaustive solution analysis infeasible. Traditional multi-objective optimization methods rely on static Pareto-front …

All Theses
Wireless communication Systems enabling Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) data exchange, supported by technologies such as Cellular-V2X (C-V2X), has introduced significant cybersecurity challenges, particularly the threat of false information attacks that can compromise traffic safety and efficiency. In this thesis, the author focuses on identifying false information cyber-attack on V2I, in which vehicles are sending Basic Safety Messages (BSMs) to a Roadside Unit (RSU) and RSUs are collecting, processing and communicating data back to Connected Vehicles (CVs) to support different CV applications. Despite advances in anomaly detection using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, these models often struggle with computational efficiency …
Developing Reduced Order Models For Gas Bubble Formation In Irradiated Metals Using Integrated Phase Field Modeling And Koopman Operator Theory, John M. Eggemeyer V
Developing Reduced Order Models For Gas Bubble Formation In Irradiated Metals Using Integrated Phase Field Modeling And Koopman Operator Theory, John M. Eggemeyer V
All Theses
Irradiation damage in materials is prevalent in nuclear components, posing significant risks in the safety and reliability of nuclear reactors. Phase field models offer a versatile framework for modeling irradiation damage in materials at mesoscales. Such high fidelity method has been used to model the formation of fission gas bubbles superlattice, a microstructure array occurs at certain irradiation conditions (dose, dose-rate, and temperature). To overcome the high computational cost of phase field modeling, Koopman operator theory is applied to create reduced order models, allowing for instantaneous simulations of fission gas bubble behaviors. These low fidelity models are integrated into machine …

Evaluating The Role Of Electrostatic Forces In The Adsorption Of Perfluoroalkyl Substances To Granular Activated Carbon, Thomas A. Mccall
All Theses
In response to new drinking water regulations announced by the EPA in 2024, many municipalities will need to monitor concentrations and implement new treatments to address PFAS, a class of anthropogenic organic contaminants. A leading technology for this application is GAC adsorption due to its familiarity and availability. The adsorption of four PFAS species (PFBA, PFBS, PFOA and PFOS) to Calgon Filtrasorb400 (F400) was evaluated for a range of pH and ionic strength conditions to investigate the role of electrostatic interactions in adsorption capacity. These PFAS are all strong acids, so pH was used as a control for GAC surface …
Graph Based Deep Reinforcement Learning Aided By Transformers For Multi-Agent Cooperation, Michael S. Elrod
Graph Based Deep Reinforcement Learning Aided By Transformers For Multi-Agent Cooperation, Michael S. Elrod
All Theses
Mission planning for a fleet of cooperative autonomous drones in applications that involve serving distributed target points, such as disaster response, environmental monitoring, and surveil- lance, is challenging, especially under partial observability, limited communication range, and uncertain environments. Traditional path-planning algorithms struggle in these scenarios, particu- larly when prior information is not available. To address these challenges, I propose an innovative framework that integrates Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and transformer-based mechanisms for enhanced multi-agent coordination and collective task ex- ecution. My approach leverages GNNs to model agent-agent and agent-goal interactions through adaptive graph construction, enabling efficient …
Blockchain-Integrated Version Control For Secure And Transparent Software Supply Chains, Iwinosa W. Aideyan
Blockchain-Integrated Version Control For Secure And Transparent Software Supply Chains, Iwinosa W. Aideyan
All Theses
The software supply chain encompasses all stages of software development and delivery from initial coding and version control to integration and deployment. As development environments become increasingly distributed and reliant on external dependencies, ensuring the integrity, auditability, and consistency of code changes has become a pressing challenge. Traditional version control systems like Git, while effective for collaboration and tracking revisions, do not inherently provide tamper-evident commit histories. Features such as history rewriting (e.g., git rebase, git push --force) can be exploited to manipulate commit logs without detection, posing risks in security-sensitive domains. This thesis proposes a blockchain-integrated version control framework …
Algebraic Properties Of Boolean Models, Harrison Fisher
Algebraic Properties Of Boolean Models, Harrison Fisher
All Theses
Boolean models are n-tuples of polynomial functions in n variables over the finite field of order 2. These models define finite dynamical systems which are used for modeling many different biological systems such as gene regulatory networks. These systems can be defined by updating every function synchronously, or by updating one function at a time asynchronously. In this project, we discuss a method for reverse engineering the model space of all Boolean models which fit a set of partial asynchronous data. This method is a generalization of a known method for synchronous data. In addition, we show that given the …
Defining Fidelity For Tradespace Application, Aditya Agrawal
Defining Fidelity For Tradespace Application, Aditya Agrawal
All Theses
This research proposes a definition of tradespace fidelity and presents a study on its effectiveness in the tradespace. Tradespace exploration helps evaluate various design options, allowing engineers to make informed decisions in early design stages. Fidelity generally refers to how closely a model approximates reality. However, the definition of fidelity has been inconsistently defined and interpreted in various contexts concerning particular problems. In some cases, it is a measure of accuracy; in others, information; in another, uncertainty; and in others, computational complexity. Fidelity is poorly and inconsistently defined in the literature. In general, higher fidelity models tend to be more …
A Parametric Study Of Compact Wind Borne Debris In Tornadoes, Akash Yadav
A Parametric Study Of Compact Wind Borne Debris In Tornadoes, Akash Yadav
All Theses
Debris lofted and transported by tornadoes is a significant source of damage during these storms. Several approaches have been taken to model such debris flight, ranging in complexity from fine-scale CFD simulations to coupling the compact debris flight equations with simplified analytic models for the tornado vortex. Both approaches have their merits, though the latter comes with significantly lower computational costs. Despite the simplifications, this second approach has successfully captured details of debris flight events established in post-tornado forensic surveys. Herein, we take advantage of the low computational cost of the latter approach to undertake a detailed parametric study of …
Divergence-Free Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics In A Stream Digital Twin, Austin Hartley
Divergence-Free Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics In A Stream Digital Twin, Austin Hartley
All Theses
Digital Twins (DT) are being explored by the South Carolina (SC) water community to simulate how SC streams will flow at various water levels. Currently, a DT called Gilligan simulates these streams utilizing weakly-incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). This method does not strictly enforce incompressibility, which leads to unrealistic water flows and unwanted visual artifacts that require post-processing effects to hide. To address these problems and simulate more realistic water flows, the Gilligan stream logic is updated and a state-of-the-art SPH method that enforces incompressibility—Divergence-Free SPH (DFSPH)—is implemented within the Gilligan framework. DFSPH is able to make use of two …
Silver Nanoparticles In Ammonia Sensing And Photovoltaics, Madhuka Liyanage
Silver Nanoparticles In Ammonia Sensing And Photovoltaics, Madhuka Liyanage
All Dissertations
Nanocomposite films (NCF) containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), separated by thin layers of silica/poly-4-vinylpyridine/polyvinylpyrrolidone, were fabricated via drop casting, spin coating, dip coating on glass substrate and drop casting on nylon filter membranes. The more uniform films were produced by drop casting on nylon filter membranes due to their solvent wicking properties. The films demonstrate electrical conductivity that varies in response to moist ammonia and water vapors. The changes in conductivity are attributed to hydrogen bonding between ammonia and water molecules with the silica/polymer layers, as well as the direct adsorption of ammonia onto the silver surface. Notably, NCFs with polyvinylpyrrolidone …

Growth, Cladding, And Characterization Of Single Crystal Optical Fiber: The Next Evolution In Directed Energy Systems, Allen Benton
All Dissertations
High-power fiber lasers are steadily increasing in maximum power and rapidly approaching theoretical maximum power output from a single fiber aperture. The low thermal conductivity of silica fibers is an inherent limitation to the dissipation of heat from the fiber core, and the buildup of heat within the laser gain media is the principal driver of transverse mode instability within fiber systems. This limitation necessitates the exploration of alternate fiber host materials. Due to their high thermal conductivity, excellent transmission range, ability to host most of the optically active rare earth ions, and success as bulk laser materials, single-crystalline YAG …

The Effect Of Storyline Units On The Self-Efficacy And Science Identity Of High School Multilingual Learners, Kristin Ambrose
The Effect Of Storyline Units On The Self-Efficacy And Science Identity Of High School Multilingual Learners, Kristin Ambrose
All Dissertations
Science can be a complex subject for multilingual learners (MLLs) because it requires investigating science concepts through modeling and analysis in addition to reading and writing skills. This complexity often leaves teachers unsure of how to support the MLLs, leading to MLLs missing out on grade-appropriate content and science experiences. Storyline instruction uses 3D instruction to teach science content necessary to explain a real-world anchoring phenomenon. Storyline instruction grounds learning in real-world contexts through anchoring phenomena and provides coherence for students throughout the lessons. This mixed methods study aimed to discover the impact of storyline units on the self-efficacy (SE) …
Decision Space Decomposition For Multiobjective Programs, Emma Soriano
Decision Space Decomposition For Multiobjective Programs, Emma Soriano
All Dissertations
Being inspired by the parametric decomposition theorem for multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs) of Cuenca and Miguel (2017), and by the block- coordinate descent for single objective optimization problems, we present a decom- position theorem for computing the set of minimal elements of a partially ordered set. This set is decomposed into subsets whose minimal elements are used to retrieve the overall minimal elements. We apply this approach to strictly convex MOPs de- composing their decision space into lines. The line decomposition benefits from the fact that a multiobjective line search problem is equivalent to solving a collection of single objective …
