Melts To Solutions: Structure, Dynamics, And Response Of Polyelectrolytes, Shalika Meedin Aug 2025

Melts To Solutions: Structure, Dynamics, And Response Of Polyelectrolytes, Shalika Meedin

All Dissertations

The current research elucidates the changes in the structure and motion of polyelectrolytes as they are perturbed by solvents and shear flows. Polyelectrolytes are macromolecules whose backbone consists of long, predominantly hydrocarbon chains, substituted by ionizable groups, which tend to dissociate into ions in polar solvents. Their properties result from a delicate balance of elastic energy that arises from the polymeric backbone and electrostatic forces, which stem from the ionizable groups. Though polyelectrolytes have an immense potential to propel numerous technologies, from clean energy to drug delivery systems, understanding the delicate balance between the properties of the polymer backbone and …

Accurate Temporal Integration Schemes For Nonlinear Adsorption Problems, Evan D. Butterworth Aug 2025

Accurate Temporal Integration Schemes For Nonlinear Adsorption Problems, Evan D. Butterworth

All Dissertations

We consider a nonlinear transport problem to model the chromatography process of high-capacity multimodal membranes. Robust and efficient algorithms that simulate these bioseparation processes are critical to developing therapeutics for various chronic illnesses and infectious diseases. However, much of the current methodology focuses on stabilization and linearization techniques, often implementing low-order time-discretizations and linearized adsorption, resulting in inefficiencies and inaccuracies in the numerical solution. Utilizing Rothe's method, we develop various time-discretization schemes coupled with the finite element method to solve the fully implicit problems. Stability and solvability results are presented for several methods. Through multiple high-level software implementations paired with …

Constructing Code-Based Zero-Knowledge Proofs Leveraging Generic Errors And Bounded Vectors, Freeman Slaughter

All Dissertations

Quantum computing is developing at an expeditious rate, and once fully scalable quantum computers become realized, classical cryptographic systems face obsolescence. This approaching peril has prompted a paradigm shift away from pre-quantum cryptography and towards post-quantum primitives, such as those that arise from the field of coding theory. Among these, zero-knowledge proofs have emerged as a dynamic tool instrumental in constructing quantum-resilient digital signature schemes.

We being by introducing HammR, a pre-quantum zero-knowledge proof protocol designed to verify Hamming weight and entry constraints of error vectors, and comprehensively establish its security. Subsequently, we extend HammR to the multi-party computation setting, …

Online Multiobjective Optimization, Kristen Joyce Aug 2025

Online Multiobjective Optimization, Kristen Joyce

All Dissertations

Online optimization (OO) is an iterative process of decision making under uncertainty. At every step, a decision is made before the outcome of this decision is known. For the online optimization model, the objective function is unknown at the time the decision is being made. It is very likely that the taken decision is not optimal, so the decision maker incurs a loss, called regret, in every iteration. The goal of the online optimization algorithm is to compute a decision at every step so that the overall regret cost is minimized. In particular, the average regret produced by an ideal …

Chemical & Electromagnetic Signatures Of Binary Neutron Star Mergers, Benjamin Amend Aug 2025

Chemical & Electromagnetic Signatures Of Binary Neutron Star Mergers, Benjamin Amend

All Dissertations

Binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are some of the most energetic events in the universe, producing both short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and kilonovae. GRBs are brief, bright flashes of gamma rays, powered by ultra-relativistic jets launched during the merger. These jets produce a prompt burst of gamma rays, followed by a broadband afterglow generated by external shocks as the outflow interacts with the surrounding medium. Kilonovae are optical-infrared transients from the radioactive decay of heavy, neutron-rich nuclei formed through the rapid neutron capture process (r-process) in the merger ejecta. Together, GRBs and kilonovae provide unique laboratories for probing fundamental physics …

Three Essays In The Economics Of Disagreements: Incentives, Measurement And Persistence, Mustafa W. Alam Aug 2025

Three Essays In The Economics Of Disagreements: Incentives, Measurement And Persistence, Mustafa W. Alam

All Dissertations

This dissertation presents three chapters that contribute to the study of economic forces shaping disagreements in society.

In Chapter 1, I demonstrate that political polarization can intensify due to innovations in the information market even if a population's ideological distribution is fixed. Viewership-maximizing news firms cater to a diverse audience who assess source accuracy using noisy private signals that vary in precision and ideological bias. If better-informed consumers disproportionately migrate to newer platforms for news (e.g., the Internet), traditional media firms increase news slant to appeal more to less-informed partisans on both sides of the ideological spectrum. This leads to …
