Interpreter Intervention And Participant Roles In Witness Examination, Eva Ng
Interpreter Intervention And Participant Roles In Witness Examination, Eva Ng
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The court interpreter code of ethics in general requires interpreters to restrict their function strictly to interpreting and to refrain from clarifying ambiguity with the speaker, especially with the witness. The code usually suggests that permission be sought from the court if interpreter intervention is unavoidable. Empirical studies show, however, that departure from this ethical code is commonplace. Drawing on an authentic courtroom trial in the High Court of Hong Kong, and using Goffman’s (1981) participation framework as the analytical tool, this article aims to illustrate how the court interpreter changes her participant role in the court proceedings by initiating …
Understanding The Work Of Designated Healthcare Interpreters, Laurie Swabey
Understanding The Work Of Designated Healthcare Interpreters, Laurie Swabey
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Interpreters who work regularly with a deaf health professional are often referred to, in the U.S., as designated healthcare interpreters (DHIs). To date, there have not been any systematic studies that specifically investigate the work of DHIs, yet the number of deaf people pursuing careers in the health professions continues to grow (Zazove et al., 2016), and the number of qualified DHIs to work with these professionals is insufficient (Gallaudet University, 2011). Before educational programming can be effectively developed, we need to know more about the work of DHIs. Using a job analysis approach (Brannick, Levine, & Morgeson, 2007), we …

Lost In The Shuffle: Deaf-Parented Interpreters And Their Paths To Interpreting Careers, Amy Williamson
Lost In The Shuffle: Deaf-Parented Interpreters And Their Paths To Interpreting Careers, Amy Williamson
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Deaf-parented individuals have experiences as child language brokers (Napier, in press) and as native and heritage users of signed language (Compton, 2014) prior to engaging in a formal interpreter education program or seeking training to become an interpreter. Anecdotally, deaf-parented interpreters say that educational opportunities do not meet their specific needs and skill sets but instead are designed for the L2 user of signed language. A goal of this study was to expand the limited research that currently exists in the field of interpreter education as it relates to L1 users of American Sign Language (ASL)—specifically, deaf-parented individuals. This study …

Physical Aggression And Mindfulness Among College Students: Evidence From China And The United States, Yu Gao, Lu Shi, Kelly C. Smith, Jeffrey B. Kingree, Martie Thompson
Publications
The link between trait mindfulness and several dimensions of aggression (verbal, anger and hostility) has been documented, while the link between physical aggression and trait mindfulness remains less clear. Method: We used two datasets: one United States sample from 300 freshmen males from Clemson University, South Carolina and a Chinese sample of 1516 freshmen students from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Multiple regressions were conducted to examine the association between mindfulness (measured by Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS)) and each of the four subscales of aggression. Results: Among the Clemson sample (N = 286), the …
An Examination Of Leader-Member Exchange And Team Effectiveness, Brooke B. Allison
An Examination Of Leader-Member Exchange And Team Effectiveness, Brooke B. Allison
All Dissertations
Previous research has indicated the importance of leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships for organizational team effectiveness (e.g., Boies & Howell, 2006; Hooper & Martin, 2008). However, few studies have examined the complexity of this relationship empirically, nor examined how leader differentiation of LMX, a main tenet of LMX theory, may affect vital team processes and emergent states required for successful team performance. The current study developed and tested a model of the relations between LMX, perceived LMX variability, team behavioral processes, and emergent affective states on team effectiveness. Individuals representing 66 university research teams from a medium-sized university participated in the …
Conceptions Of Change: A Phenomenographical Study Of The Reinvention Initiative At The City Colleges Of Chicago, Jennifer M. Horace
Conceptions Of Change: A Phenomenographical Study Of The Reinvention Initiative At The City Colleges Of Chicago, Jennifer M. Horace
All Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to add to the literature on community colleges and organizational change. This study explored how interested parties, internal and external, understood the organizational change called the Reinvention Initiative occurring at the City Colleges of Chicago and how this organizational change influenced constituencies' definition of efficiency and effectiveness for the organization. In order to accurately answer the research questions, a qualitative research method called phenomenography was employed. The study used overt and covert data collection to obtain data from stakeholders of the City Colleges of Chicago. The researcher did semi-structured interviews and as well as …

Acculturation, Ethnic Identity, And Psychological Well-Being Of Albanian-American Immigrants In The United States, Albina Balidemaj
All Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between acculturation, ethnic identity, and psychological well-being of the Albanian-American immigrant community in United States. A total of 139 Albanian-American immigrants aged 21-35 years old participated in the study. In order to utilize the data, participants filled out four different surveys, including a demographic questionnaire, the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), the Vancouver Index of Acculturation (VIA), and Ryff's Psychological Well-Being scale. A correlational design relying on cross-sectional survey data and multiple regression analysis was used to study the correlations between acculturation, ethnic identity, and psychological well-being. The results showed that ethnic identity, acculturation, and …
Surprise. Aesthetics And Sensibilities Of Rhetorics, Matthew J. Osborn
Surprise. Aesthetics And Sensibilities Of Rhetorics, Matthew J. Osborn
All Dissertations
This dissertation investigates relationships scholars have with information and art associated with aesthetic and theoretical disruptions. Its governing metaphor is the surprise affect, figured as a rhetorical and aesthetic event. My purposes are to evaluate institutional and scholastic responses to both desirable and disastrous information-aesthetic liminalities, trial performative engagements with surprises, and propose viable ways of engaging "innovation" for writing instruction. It is argued that aesthetic (i.e., relational in the sense that it is not immediate), performative, and temporal engagements with surprising objects of study are relatively viable options when considered alongside the "critical" manuscript. While the aesthetic has sometimes …
Administrative Best Practices To Influence Culture In A Rural Middle School Of Poverty, John David Nixon
Administrative Best Practices To Influence Culture In A Rural Middle School Of Poverty, John David Nixon
All Dissertations
Studies have shown a direct correlation between positive school culture and increases in student achievement (Bulach et al, 1995; Goddard et al, 2000; Kaplan & Owings, 2013; McCarley et al, 2014; Thapa et al, 2013; Whitaker, 2001). The literature also suggests that the culture within a school can be positively impacted through effective leadership (Hallinger, et al, 2014), but the literature available for rural schools in regards to student achievement and culture is limited (Arnold, et al, 2005 and Lee, 2001). This purpose of this mixed-method case study is to identify what practices a principal employed to create a change …
Quantifying Drivers' Responses To Failures Of Semi-Autonomous Vehicle Systems, Sijun Shen
Quantifying Drivers' Responses To Failures Of Semi-Autonomous Vehicle Systems, Sijun Shen
All Dissertations
The number of vehicles on the road with advanced and automated driving support systems (DSSs) is increasing. However, there may be some issues related to the implementation of DSSs in vehicles. One of those issues caused by the automated DSSs relates to the drivers' being out-of-the-loop. As drivers' roles are transitioned from system operators to systems supervisors (as in autonomous vehicles), drivers' situation awareness of the driving surroundings may decrease which could negatively affect their responses when they need to take control of the vehicle from the malfunctioned (or failed) DSSs. Additionally, with both the adaptive cruise control (ACC) and …
Identity Design: Challenging Archetypes With Feminist Approaches To Video Game Design, Lauren Woolbright
Identity Design: Challenging Archetypes With Feminist Approaches To Video Game Design, Lauren Woolbright
All Dissertations
Lack of diversity in video games and the mainstream games industry warrants an inclusive, feminist approach to game design. Producing a feminist video game as a core component of my dissertation will impact rhetorical, literary, game, and feminist studies, emphasizing the benefits of embracing electrate and playful modes of identity formation and pedagogy.
Collective Sensemaking About The Implementation Of Two Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Selected Elementary School Teams, Ellen M. Hampshire
Collective Sensemaking About The Implementation Of Two Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Selected Elementary School Teams, Ellen M. Hampshire
All Dissertations
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) provide two examples of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Over several decades, MTSS developed as policy-based initiatives intended to increase equity, access, and quality of education. These initiatives integrate school and classroom practices for improving academic and social/behavioral development for all students. However, studies indicate continued implementation problems within each system across all levels of intervention. Such results signal concerns about implementation capacity for the intent of both MTSS policies' regarding educational access, equity and quality. Literature indicates that policy intent is converted at the micro, or school, level …
The Preservation Of Tabby Ruins: Suggestions For The Future Of Chocolate Plantation, Rachel Walling
The Preservation Of Tabby Ruins: Suggestions For The Future Of Chocolate Plantation, Rachel Walling
All Theses
The preservation efforts undertaken at historic tabby sites have varied greatly from site to site with differing levels of success. A critical look at different preservation strategies enables the development of best practices for appropriate tabby preservation. These best practices may be applied to an array of sites but are tested in this thesis as they are applied to Chocolate Plantation. Chocolate Plantation is a historic site from the early nineteenth century composed primarily of tabby buildings on the Georgia barrier island of Sapelo. Constructed during the Spalding Era of tabby, between the years 1790 and 1875, Chocolate is representative …
The Zombi Of The British Empire: Rochester's Imperialist Drive In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre And Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Chloe Whitaker
The Zombi Of The British Empire: Rochester's Imperialist Drive In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre And Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Chloe Whitaker
All Theses
This paper examines the character of Rochester as he is presented both in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (1847) and Jean Rhys' post-colonial response work Wide Sargasso Sea (1939). In both works, Rochester is portrayed as the consummate colonist who dominates the women he comes into contact with, metaphorically turning them into his colonized possessions. In order to explore the process of feminine subjugation and colonial mastery, Rhys utilizes the figure of the zombi, a traumatized victim deprived of all free will by a sorcerous bokor who uses the zombi as a source of labor. In this metaphor, scholars and critics …
Historic Preservation As Social Justice: Analyzing Historic Charleston Foundation's Elliottborough Neighborhood Impact Initiative, Lourdes Naomi Doddington
Historic Preservation As Social Justice: Analyzing Historic Charleston Foundation's Elliottborough Neighborhood Impact Initiative, Lourdes Naomi Doddington
All Theses
While scholars debate the causes of gentrification and some question if it exists, the revitalization of inner-city neighborhoods more often than not results in the displacement of many of its residents. Failure to engage the unintended consequences of gentrification are world-wide. Some policy-makers embraced gentrification as a panacea for all their city's problems. The displacement of the urban poor and lower-middle class weakens not only their bonds with generations of community but also the character of the neighborhood which attracted the gentrifiers in the first place. Grassroots organizations have attempted anti-displacement efforts by in many places, but there have been …

"A Woman To Command Men": Becky Hammon's First Year As An Assistant In The Nba And Conversations About Sport Culture On Twitter, Kelly Frances Gramlich
All Theses
Previous research has shown that Twitter has become a place where cultural discussions can occur and that Twitter has the potential to undermine hierarchies of authority and power by affording a voice to those who are not heard in the mainstream media. Becky Hammon's hiring as the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA provided a rich opportunity to utilize Twitter as a way to study perceptions of Hammon throughout her first year on the NBA sidelines and specifically, as a way to hear both mainstream and marginalized voices. Radian6 was used to collect tweets mentioning "Becky Hammon" throughout …
The Sunglasses Of Ideology: Augmented Reality As Posthuman Cognitive Prosthesis, Jason Crider
The Sunglasses Of Ideology: Augmented Reality As Posthuman Cognitive Prosthesis, Jason Crider
All Theses
This project argues a methodological approach for examining augmented reality (AR) that blends new media studies with that of the digital humanities to develop a hybrid methodology that accounts for AR as a digital medium and, in turn, a critical framework for digital humanities (DH) cultural criticism. As Steven Jones argues in The Emergence of the Digital Humanities, the digital has always been physical, and the network has become "the water in which we swim" (20). Our networked tech has begun to reflect this by showing closer interaction between physical and digital artifacts, the most notable example being AR, where …

Like A Character In A Truffaut Film, Trevor Lance Seigler

I composed these two stories in my two different Fiction Workshop classes, they both deal with mortality and the concept of what we do and how it affects others. I would like to think that they also exhibit some of the genre-bending notions I absorbed from reading Jonathan Lethem, who is the subject of the critical essay.
"The Wildest Stock": Service, Monarchical Grafting, And Environmental Engagement In The Winter's Tale, Kristen Joy Hixon
"The Wildest Stock": Service, Monarchical Grafting, And Environmental Engagement In The Winter's Tale, Kristen Joy Hixon
All Theses
William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale opens by expressing the friendship of King Leontes of Sicilia and King Polixenes of Bohemia in horticultural terms and explaining how the friendship "branch[es]" with the aid of servants when the monarchs cannot meet in person (1.1.24). The tyrannical Leontes conveys the depth of his relationship to his servant Camillo by discussing the trust that establishes that relationship as a physical connection. He calls Camillo "a servant grafted in my serious trust" (1.2.247). Using lines like these, the play asks us to read its discussion of service in terms of early modern horticultural practice. However, …
George Washington's Mount Vernon Stable In Context: A Comparative Analysis Of Early American Stables, Meghan Paige White
George Washington's Mount Vernon Stable In Context: A Comparative Analysis Of Early American Stables, Meghan Paige White
All Theses
As the Revolutionary War came to a close, George Washington sent orders from Pennsylvania to his Mount Vernon farm in Virginia to construct a new horse stable. Completed in 1782, this substantial brick building survives as one of the best representations between the planter-elite like Washington and the multiple roles horses played in the culture of eighteenth-century America. This thesis applies an investigation of surviving stables on the east coast and historical sources to explore the evolution of stable architecture in eighteenth and nineteenth-century America. Stables, like essentially everything else in early American life, represented the materialism, power, wealth, and …
The Image Of The Vacant Chair: Soldier And Family Connections In The First World War, Constance Wallace
The Image Of The Vacant Chair: Soldier And Family Connections In The First World War, Constance Wallace
All Theses
How does the image of a vacant chair and nineteenth century anxiety about the family play out in the writing of letters during the First World War? The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of letters as a possible symbolic representation of the individual soldier and to answer questions regarding how this representation paralleled the history of family dynamics during the nineteenth century and into the first part of the twentieth century. Reid Mitchell's book, The Vacant Chair: The Northern Soldier Leaves Home, is cornerstone to the argument of this thesis. His text helps to visualize the …
'Ill-Liver Of Her Body:' A Legal Examination Of Prostitution In Late Medieval Greater London, Lauren Marie Martiere
'Ill-Liver Of Her Body:' A Legal Examination Of Prostitution In Late Medieval Greater London, Lauren Marie Martiere
All Theses
The following study endeavors to synthesize and enhance knowledge of what has previously been an under-represented field in the study of English medieval prostitution. It examines a variety of primary sources documenting the laws, punishments, and regulations concerning sexual commerce and reaches conclusions about the marginalization of prostitutes and the diverging systems of prostitution control implemented in the City of London and the Bishop of Winchester's manor in Southwark. First, women, especially prostitutes, were marginalized in medieval English society. The prostitutes' inability to play an active role in either the secular or religious life of English communities cemented their position …
Woman As Place: The Utilization Of The Female Body In Horror Film, Madison Alisa Johnson
Woman As Place: The Utilization Of The Female Body In Horror Film, Madison Alisa Johnson
All Theses
By combining the works of theorists like Yi-Fu Tuan, Luce Irigaray, and Carol Clover, with the films Rosemary's Baby (Dir. Roman Polanski, 1968) and It Follows (Dir. David Robert Mitchell, 2015), I am exploring where the philosophy of space and place collides with horror film and anxiety. Women are told to fit specific roles, to serve specific purposes. Within the scope of the horror genre, the woman under scrutiny is the "final girl," a girl that Clover says will survive the film to tell her story. We use the body of the final girl as a receptacle for anxiety and …

"Our Brother's Keepers": Ethel Grimball And The Wadmalaw Island Citizenship School, Alexandra Elizabeth Bethlenfalvy
All Theses
This study evaluates the roles that African American women played in positions of political power through their work with the Citizenship Schools of South Carolina. The women of this local education movement are often overlooked because most historiography focuses on the male contributors, and just recently has a biography been written about the school’s founder, Septima Clark. There are additional women involved in the Citizenship School programs who helped teach African Americans to read and write in order to pass voter registration tests. These women should be discussed as part of Civil Rights Movement scholarship. Additionally, the Citizenship Schools were …
