Exploring The Effects Of Network Dynamics On Student Test Scores In A Rural Middle School, Bridget C. Briley

All Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to explore network dynamics within a rural middle school and identify to what extent middle school faculty engagement in network dynamics affects student test scores. Specifically, within the study, I examined the effects of network relationships (i.e., trust and social ties), content exchange (i.e., advice ties), and student context on students’ Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test scores for Fall, Spring, and Growth. A survey was sent to 75 faculty and staff members in a rural middle school of 740 students. Network analysis by means of the ORA software toolkit, along with hierarchical linear …

The Impact Of Marital Satisfaction On The Utilization Of Mental Health Services Among Soldiers, Dana Lee Varkis Aug 2016

The Impact Of Marital Satisfaction On The Utilization Of Mental Health Services Among Soldiers, Dana Lee Varkis

All Dissertations

Objective: The underutilization of mental health services amongst military personnel is significant, especially among those who screen positive for mental health disorders. The factors that may deter or facilitate mental health utilization are varied and complex. The mechanisms through which these barriers and facilitators operate as well the conditions under which they have the most or least influence remain under examined. The current study examined factors associated with mental health service use and tested marital satisfaction as moderator of relationship between barriers to care and utilization and mental health symptoms and utilization. Method: The study analyzed data from anonymous surveys …

On Becoming A Graduate Student Teacher Of Mathematics, Eliza Dargan Gallagher Aug 2016

On Becoming A Graduate Student Teacher Of Mathematics, Eliza Dargan Gallagher

All Dissertations

As a nation, we face a critical need to expand and enhance the STEM workforce and to improve the quantitative literacy of our populace. Doing so requires effective instruction in mathematics at all levels, from pre-kindergarten through post-graduate studies. However, while much work has been done to improve K-12 teacher preparation in mathematics, and to help new faculty members learn to balance research and teaching duties, we are only beginning to address the preparation of mathe-matics graduate students to teach. Moreover, those limited efforts have, until recently, been largely focused on imparting teaching strategies rather than on developing a teacher …

Middle School Subject Area Teachers' Self-Efficacy With English Language Learners: A Mixed Methods Study, Tracy Dawn Butler Aug 2016

Middle School Subject Area Teachers' Self-Efficacy With English Language Learners: A Mixed Methods Study, Tracy Dawn Butler

All Dissertations

The population of English language learners (ELLs) within the US has been steadily increasing over the past 20 years, thereby escalating the need for teachers to be knowledgeable in how to teach these students. However, research indicates that many teachers are not receiving adequate English as a Second Language (ESL) professional development. Lack of professional development in ESL strategies may adversely affect teachers’ self-efficacy because they are unfamiliar with methods to assist their ELL students in learning academic content. The purpose of this research study was to determine if particular subject areas taught by middle school teachers engender a higher …

The Role Of Community Participation For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Development, Nicole Barclay Aug 2016

The Role Of Community Participation For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Development, Nicole Barclay

All Dissertations

The primary objective of this research is to understand the role of community participation in green stormwater infrastructure development. Even though the literature affirms the need for community participation to facilitate its implementation, no study in the engineering literature examines this idea with an in-depth, descriptive case study. It is important to understand how technical and non-technical factors interact to promote or hinder its implementation. This work uses the qualitative case study methodology to fulfil the objective and answer the research questions. The case study is based on the Proctor Creek Watershed, Atlanta Georgia, a rapidly growing urban area located …

Safety Risk Investigation Of Horizontal Directional Drilling Projects, Phalguni Yamuna Moganti Aug 2016

Safety Risk Investigation Of Horizontal Directional Drilling Projects, Phalguni Yamuna Moganti

All Theses

Traditional underground utility construction and rehabilitation methods entail cutting open the ground which not only disrupts traffic causing delays and inconvenience, but also damages surface-based vegetation in some areas. Additionally, underground infrastructure density has been growing thereby making it more challenging to employ the traditional open-cut construction method. A sustainable alternative is the use of trenchless construction methods where underground infrastructure is installed or repaired with minimal surface disruption. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is one of the popular trenchless methods for installing buried utility pipelines. Risk dimensionality and severity is generally greater in the case of HDD projects because of …

An Exploration Of Environmental Values In The Asian, Developing-World Context Of Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, Vietnam, Madeline Duda

All Theses

It has been generally assumed that individuals’ environmental values are influenced by culture, experiences, social norms, economic standing, among others. However, to date research on held environmental values has focused primarily on the developed world context. To address this gap, this research explores the environmental values of local people in a developing world context, specifically the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark (DVKPG) in Ha Giang Province, Vietnam. To examine individual’s value orientation related to sense of place and held environmental values we asked residents of DVKPG a set of two open-ended questions: (1) what is most important to you …

Meta-Analysis Of Life Cycle Assessment Studies On Solar Photovoltaic Systems, Zikai "Victor" Zhou Aug 2016

Meta-Analysis Of Life Cycle Assessment Studies On Solar Photovoltaic Systems, Zikai "Victor" Zhou

All Theses

Nowadays, greenhouse gas emission problem is becoming more and more severe. At the same time, world energy demand increases a lot every year. All the countries focus on using renewable energy and take it as the solution of future energy demand problem. Although the solar energy only makes up 1% market share of the total renewable energy, it grows rapidly recent years. Because the energy coming from sun is tens of time more than energy coming from the fossil fuel. There are three main type of the photovoltaic technologies, which are crystalline silicon solar cell, thin-film solar cell and polymer …

A Family Dispute: The African-American Community's Response To Uncle Tom, Spencer York Aug 2016

A Family Dispute: The African-American Community's Response To Uncle Tom, Spencer York

All Theses

This thesis is an attempt to understand the complex relationship between theAfrican-American community and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Itargues that a large reason for the negative connotation of “uncle Tom” within theAfrican-American community was caused by conflicts between intellectual patternsand traditions of the community and Stowe’s vision in her novel. This thesis looks atthe key texts in the intellectual history of the African-American community, including the literary responses by African Americans to the novel. This thesis seeksto fill gaps in the history of the African-American community by looking at howmembers of the community exercised their agency to achieve the …

Gender Hybridity In H.G. Wells' The Island Of Dr. Moreau, Charlotte Rene Powell Aug 2016

Gender Hybridity In H.G. Wells' The Island Of Dr. Moreau, Charlotte Rene Powell

All Theses

Critical scholarship regarding The Island of Dr. Moreau typically concerns themes of evolution and internal corruption. However, the unstudied question of evolution in The Island of Dr. Moreau remains the places where Edward Prendick’s performances of unconventional masculinity on the island inhabit language used to describe bestial regression and indicate a place where rhetoric regarding evolution and gender intersect. The gap in the critical conversation surrounding the representation of Prendick is an important place where the concept of hybridity and evolution can and should be extended. Through a close reading of Prendick’s reactions to events that occur over the course …

Between Flesh And Being: Theorizing The Racial Body And The Position Of Personhood In Claudia Rankine's Citizen, Lanja Najmalddin Karim Aug 2016

Between Flesh And Being: Theorizing The Racial Body And The Position Of Personhood In Claudia Rankine's Citizen, Lanja Najmalddin Karim

All Theses

In this paper I argue that Claudia Rankine, in Citizen (2014), by concentrating on the place and position of the radicalized body, creates a technique of resistance that emerges as assemblages against contemporary racism. Citizen narrates the stories of a range of racist incidents that happen to individuals, including the author herself and celebrities in Western societies. Those incidents have been narrated and re-contextualized through a unique technique of representation, where multiple genres, such as lyric, prose, and visual images, all collaborate in telling those stories in the text. In Citizen, resistance is the predominant mode of narration. The text …

Understanding The Expenditure And Recovery Of Anaerobic Work Capacity Using Noninvasive Sensors, Phoebe Bickford Aug 2016

Understanding The Expenditure And Recovery Of Anaerobic Work Capacity Using Noninvasive Sensors, Phoebe Bickford

All Theses

The objective of this research is to advance the understanding of human performance to allow for optimized efforts on specific tasks. This is accomplished by 1) understanding the expenditure and recovery of Anaerobic Work Capacity (AWC) as related to the Critical Power (CP) of a human, and 2) determining if and how a case for an energy-management system to optimize energy expenditure and recovery can be made in real-time using noninvasive sensors. As humans exert energy, the body converts fuel into mechanical power through both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. The mechanical power produced can be measured through the use …

Population Dynamics Of Black Bears In Northwestern South Carolina, Shefali Azad Aug 2016

Population Dynamics Of Black Bears In Northwestern South Carolina, Shefali Azad

All Theses

Black bears (Ursus americanus) are managed as a game species in the northwestern region of South Carolina. However, no formal research study has examined their long-term population trends. I used the Downing harvest population reconstruction technique to establish abundance trends. The total population in 2013 was estimated at about 412 bears, increasing from about 97 bears in 1998. I also derived abundance, density, average age, and sex ratios at a county-level to investigate differential stages of recovery. Overall my results suggest that in 1998-2013 Oconee county had a rapidly expanding population, Pickens county requires further investigation into potential bear overharvest, …

Incorporating Cultural Competence & Youth Program Volunteers: A Literature Review, Julianne Smith, Katherine Soule

Journal of Youth Development

The increasing diversity of youth in the United States necessitates a shift in the ways that youth services and programming are designed and implemented. This article examines existing scholarship on developing the cultural competency of volunteers in youth development programs in an effort to improve 4-H YDP protocol. Drawing from a diverse, interdisciplinary range of peer-reviewed, academic articles, this literature review plots out recent pedagogical trends, theoretical concepts, and empirical studies dealing with the cultural competence of service workers and mentors interacting with youth. Based on a synthesis of the findings, this paper presents guiding principles for increasing cultural competence …
