'Ill-Liver Of Her Body:' A Legal Examination Of Prostitution In Late Medieval Greater London, Lauren Marie Martiere May 2016

'Ill-Liver Of Her Body:' A Legal Examination Of Prostitution In Late Medieval Greater London, Lauren Marie Martiere

All Theses

The following study endeavors to synthesize and enhance knowledge of what has previously been an under-represented field in the study of English medieval prostitution. It examines a variety of primary sources documenting the laws, punishments, and regulations concerning sexual commerce and reaches conclusions about the marginalization of prostitutes and the diverging systems of prostitution control implemented in the City of London and the Bishop of Winchester's manor in Southwark. First, women, especially prostitutes, were marginalized in medieval English society. The prostitutes' inability to play an active role in either the secular or religious life of English communities cemented their position …

Woman As Place: The Utilization Of The Female Body In Horror Film, Madison Alisa Johnson May 2016

Woman As Place: The Utilization Of The Female Body In Horror Film, Madison Alisa Johnson

All Theses

By combining the works of theorists like Yi-Fu Tuan, Luce Irigaray, and Carol Clover, with the films Rosemary's Baby (Dir. Roman Polanski, 1968) and It Follows (Dir. David Robert Mitchell, 2015), I am exploring where the philosophy of space and place collides with horror film and anxiety. Women are told to fit specific roles, to serve specific purposes. Within the scope of the horror genre, the woman under scrutiny is the "final girl," a girl that Clover says will survive the film to tell her story. We use the body of the final girl as a receptacle for anxiety and …

"Our Brother's Keepers": Ethel Grimball And The Wadmalaw Island Citizenship School, Alexandra Elizabeth Bethlenfalvy May 2016

"Our Brother's Keepers": Ethel Grimball And The Wadmalaw Island Citizenship School, Alexandra Elizabeth Bethlenfalvy

All Theses

This study evaluates the roles that African American women played in positions of political power through their work with the Citizenship Schools of South Carolina. The women of this local education movement are often overlooked because most historiography focuses on the male contributors, and just recently has a biography been written about the school’s founder, Septima Clark. There are additional women involved in the Citizenship School programs who helped teach African Americans to read and write in order to pass voter registration tests. These women should be discussed as part of Civil Rights Movement scholarship. Additionally, the Citizenship Schools were …

Will The Real Captain America Please Stand-Up: Redefining The Patriotic Hero Post-9/11, Michelle Anne Lloyd May 2016

Will The Real Captain America Please Stand-Up: Redefining The Patriotic Hero Post-9/11, Michelle Anne Lloyd

All Theses

Art, in all of its forms, has always reflected the moods and mores of the society that create it. This is true with the creating of comic books as well. Just as hardboiled novels reflected the bitterness and harshness of The Great Depression, a post-9/11 superhero had to become darker. Steve Rogers was plagued with PTSD following his revival in the 1960s and has abandoned the stars and stripes in the past, but he was not -- is not -- equipped to be Captain America in the 21st Century. The trend in comic books, and Science Fiction, following 9/11 favored …

Treacherous Selves: Subjection And Subjectivity In The Tragedy Of Mariam, Emily Anne Boyter May 2016

Treacherous Selves: Subjection And Subjectivity In The Tragedy Of Mariam, Emily Anne Boyter

All Theses

This paper addresses the topic of subjectivity and subjection as expressed through language in Elizabeth Cary’s The Tragedy of Mariam. By tracing the grammatical choices made by two of the play’s primary female characters, Mariam and Salome, the paper argues that these women shape and express their ideas of themselves as speaking subjects through their use of language; the subjective selves they create in the process are continually in tension with their identities as wives, whose identities, by the standards of early modern chastity, ought to be absorbed and obliterated by their husbands’ identities. The supposed death and subsequent return …

Tucked Away: An Analysis Of Charleston's Courts And Alleys & The Search For Graceful Density, Haley Marie Schriber May 2016

Tucked Away: An Analysis Of Charleston's Courts And Alleys & The Search For Graceful Density, Haley Marie Schriber

All Theses

The gritty, authentic quality of the alleys, lanes, and work yards that channeled the day-to-day routines of Charleston's working class and poor fascinated and inspired writers, poets, and artists during the decades that followed World War I. Charleston's alleys, particularly those South of Broad, were often the subject of romantic celebration. A far more common secondary urban street form, the court, has, in contrast, received neither popular or scholarly attention. The courts of Charleston are short, narrow pedestrian streets that pierce the center of residential blocks, historically lined with small houses and tenements that housed the city's labor force, recent …

Hosts' Motivations For Participation, Problems And Challenges In Homestay Tourism-Shompole Maasai Kenya, Shani Y. Ole Petenya May 2016

Hosts' Motivations For Participation, Problems And Challenges In Homestay Tourism-Shompole Maasai Kenya, Shani Y. Ole Petenya

All Theses

The Tourism sector is a key driver for socio - economic growth in most rural communities in Africa. In Kenya, tourism as an industry is the second highest foreign exchange earner after agriculture and accounts for 10 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Homestay Tourism is a vital subsector of the Kenyan Tourism and has been promoted to diversify its products base, provide availability of beds or accommodation in rural areas, to empower the local communities economically, and enhance the quality of life of local hosts. However, little empirical evidence exists to ascertain motivations that sway homestay owners in rural areas …

Effects Of Host Plant Architecture On The Functional Response Of Cryptolaemus Montrouszieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Hechu Zhu May 2016

Effects Of Host Plant Architecture On The Functional Response Of Cryptolaemus Montrouszieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Hechu Zhu

All Theses

Functional response describes the relationship between the number of prey consumed by a predator and the prey density. Three types of functional responses have been described based on the changes in prey consumption rates with increasing prey density. Plant architecture is one of several factors that can affect the searching efficiency, and thus functional response, of predators. The objective of this study was to investigate how the numbers of branches and leaves affected functional response of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) when provided with Planococcus citri (Risso) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) as prey. Greenhouse-grown chili peppers (Capsicum annum L., cv.'Jalapeño') were manipulated …

Mothballing Vacant Buildings In The Pacific Northwest: The Engle Farm, Coupeville, Washington, Anna D. Simpkins May 2016

Mothballing Vacant Buildings In The Pacific Northwest: The Engle Farm, Coupeville, Washington, Anna D. Simpkins

All Theses

The Engle Farm is a former dairy farm cluster on Central Whidbey Island in Coupeville, Washington. The property boasts ten buildings constructed between 1858 and 1936. Nine of the ten buildings are currently vacant and form an interesting intersection for studying mothballing due to their various construction types, building materials, the weather and climate patterns on Whidbey Island and the influence of the National Park Service on the immediate vicinity. Research sought to determine the best methods for mothballing vacant buildings in the Pacific Northwest based on current best practices for our contemporary understanding of ideal environmental conditions for slowing …

Impact Of Player Quality On Demand In Major League Soccer: A Study Of Star And International Player Effect On Match Attendance, Byungiu Kang May 2016

Impact Of Player Quality On Demand In Major League Soccer: A Study Of Star And International Player Effect On Match Attendance, Byungiu Kang

All Theses

This paper examines how one of the determinants of demand for sports-player quality-influenced Major League Soccer during the seasons from 2004 to 2014. The impact is evaluated by estimating star and international players effect on match attendance. A star player is defined by their base salary, by their performance, and by their popularity. An international player is defined by his nationality. In terms of star effect, this study finds evidence that star players defined only by salary information exhibit a positive relationship on match attendance; especially, a top-10 paid player appears to produce a statistically significant increase in attendance. This …

Finding Freedom For Jane: A Reading Of Subjugation, Shame, And Sympathy In Charlotte's Brontë Jane Eyre, Rebecca Shaver May 2016

Finding Freedom For Jane: A Reading Of Subjugation, Shame, And Sympathy In Charlotte's Brontë Jane Eyre, Rebecca Shaver

All Theses

In an investigation of Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, Jane clearly desires liberty in the form of social belonging or freedom, and makes the active choice to pursue it, but finds that liberty is ultimately best won not by an antagonistic battle, but instead through subjugation by those of a higher class than herself. As a social inferior, the mere association with a higher-class family name (whether that is through employment, marriage, etc.) is enough to set Jane's eye on the ultimate goal of total autonomous freedom through social climbing. Jane actively participates in subjugation as a means to elevate …

From Overt Contentment To Hidden Space: Examining The Portrayal Of Gender Fluidity In Naylor's Bailey's Café And Walker's The Color Purple, Teneshia Shante Head May 2016

From Overt Contentment To Hidden Space: Examining The Portrayal Of Gender Fluidity In Naylor's Bailey's Café And Walker's The Color Purple, Teneshia Shante Head

All Theses

I am examining the portrayal of gender fluidity in Gloria Naylor's 'Bailey's Café (1992) and Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' (1992). Both authors show how a break from gender assumptions makes the lives of their doubly marginalized characters easier. My thesis redefines the notion of gender fluidity by examining it through the lens of intersectionality. By looking at how numerous factors such as race and gender work together, I introduce a new concept known as Black gender fluidity, a form of gender fluidity that many African Americans use to fight oppression. Black gender fluidity, unlike gender fluidity occurs because a …

Framing The Lowcountry: The Evolution Of The Region’S Vernacular Tradition, Brent Russell Fortenberry May 2016

Framing The Lowcountry: The Evolution Of The Region’S Vernacular Tradition, Brent Russell Fortenberry

All Theses

Timber-framing systems are the foundation of Early Modern vernacular architecture traditions. The fabrication, construction, and finish details of such assemblies are indexes of the character-defining features of building practices and the wider socio-cultural context. The Lowcountry of South Carolina is no exception. From the late seventeenth-century onwards builders from Old World traditions came together to erect unrivalled British edifices in the colonial and Early Republic periods. While other scholars have closely scrutinized and interpreted the framing traditions of the Chesapeake and New England, there has yet to be a consideration of the nature and evolution of the Lowcountry’s framing. Bringing …

Formulas Of Fiction: The First World War And The Popular Fiction Of 1914, Caroline Swanson May 2016

Formulas Of Fiction: The First World War And The Popular Fiction Of 1914, Caroline Swanson

All Theses

Long have first-hand accounts of fighting men been privileged in studies of the First World War, creating a narrow understanding of life at this influential time. Firsthand narratives of the soldier experience are important and present a complex history of attitudes towards the war that has had a lasting influence on the contemporary view of The First World War. However, it is not the sole experience of the war. As a departure from the narrative of the soldier at the front, many critics turn to later, modernist fiction about the war. These texts are still centered on soldiers and the …

The Writing Attitude Scale For Teachers (Wast), Anna H. Hall Apr 2016

The Writing Attitude Scale For Teachers (Wast), Anna H. Hall

Publications

This study examines the psychometric properties of the Writing Attitude Scale for Teachers (WAST) using scores of preservice teachers to gather evidence of content, internal structure, response processes, reliability/precision, and correlations with external variables. Four contending models were compared using CFA, but the unidimensional model was championed. The WAST was further refined using IRT to 10-items and shown to have high precision across most of the latent continuum. The WAST was shown to have incremental evidence relative to the Writing Apprehension Test when predicting attitudes towards attending a professional development workshop on writing instruction and time devoted to writing instruction.
