Conquering The Interpreter’S Operational Space: Sign Languageinterpreting Students And Their Acculturation To Deafblind Clients, Gro Hege Saltnes Urdal Dec 2017

Conquering The Interpreter’S Operational Space: Sign Languageinterpreting Students And Their Acculturation To Deafblind Clients, Gro Hege Saltnes Urdal

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The author reports on how interpreting students developed their evidence-based practice while becoming interpreters for deafblind people. Focus group discussions were conducted with students to explore their thoughts about interacting with deafblind people, and their experiences after such interactions. Data from the focus groups were analyzed using qualitative content analysis (Krippendorff,2013), with the aim of investigating how the mix of classroom instruction, preparatory role-play, and practice placements influenced student's evidence-based practice. The findings show that teachers contributing with their own evidence-based practice prior to the practice placements helped students develop the initial basis for their evidence-based practice. The opportunity to …

Evaluating Attitudes And Experience With Emerging Technology In Cadets And Civilian Undergraduates, Richard Pak, Ericka Rovira, Anne Collins Mclaughlin, William Leidheiser

Publications

Existing research on the characteristics of digital natives, traditionally defined as those born after 1980, has shown subtle differences in how they approach technology compared with other cohorts. However, much of the existing research has focused on a limited set of conventional technologies, mostly related to learning. In addition, prior research has shown differences within this cohort in how they respond to autonomous technology (e.g., trust, reliance; Pak, Rovira, McLaughlin, & Baldwin, 2016Pak, R., Rovira, E., McLaughlin, A., & Baldwin, N.(2016). Does the domain of technology impact user trust? Investigating trust in automation across different consumer-oriented domains in young …

Training Interpreters And Translators In Spain’S Asylum And Refugee Office (Oar): A Case Study, Carmen Valero Garcés

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The process of applying for asylum has been the primary focus of various legal studies and research programs. Numerous articles dealing with language and communication problems have recently emerged, revealing some of the adversities that interpreters and translators face when working in asylum and refugee settings. This study explores some of the issues and complexities surrounding the interpreting and translation services provided by the Spanish Asylum and Refugee Office (OAR). It also analyzes the experiences of several graduate students—and their respective mentors—during their time spent interning at the OAR. The conclusions drawn based on these experiences can act as a …

Adelante Ambassadors: Using Digital Media To Facilitate Community Engagement And Risk-Prevention For Latino Youth, Nicole Barrett, Ricardo Villalba, Elizabeth Andrade, Allison Beltran

Journal of Youth Development

Digital and social media are now widely used to promote engagement in health programs and improve health behaviors across a variety of age groups and domains. However, limited research exists on applying culturally relevant, new media interventions specific to Latino immigrant youth. This paper describes the pilot Adelante Youth Ambassador program for Latino immigrant youth, which used digital media and community-based participatory research to build positive youth development (PYD) assets as a prevention mechanism to reduce co-occurring health risks of substance use, sexual risk, and interpersonal violence. We worked collaboratively with adolescents to create video content as a conduit for …

Towards The Promotion Of Positive Development Among Boys In Challenging Contexts: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Engagement In The Scoutreach Initiative, Robey Champine, Sara Johnson

Journal of Youth Development

Engagement in youth development programs reflects the quality of young people’s program-related experiences. However, more research is needed that explores cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of engagement in programs that serve underrepresented youth of color. The present cross-sectional and mixed-methods study assessed potential relations among dimensions of engagement in the Boston-area Scoutreach initiative, character attributes, self-perceived school competence, and intentional self-regulation. We analyzed data from 32 Scouts (Mage = 9.97 years, SD = 2.46, Range = 6 to 14), 32 parents/guardians, and five Scoutreach leaders. Scouts demonstrated that they were cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally engaged in Scoutreach, and these dimensions …

A Descriptive Exploratory Study: Neighborhood Factors Related To Black Business Density, Janelle Williams Dec 2017

A Descriptive Exploratory Study: Neighborhood Factors Related To Black Business Density, Janelle Williams

All Dissertations

The racial wealth divide persistently compromises America's full economic potential. Overwhelming research continues to demonstrate that support of Black entrepreneurship can significantly reduce the racial wealth gap, while simultaneously reducing Black unemployment. Although, there has been substantial research on minority entrepreneurship, there is less emphasis on the relationship between neighborhood factors and Black entrepreneurship. This study employed a cross-sectional correlation design to examine the relationships between socio-economic neighborhood characteristics and the density of certified Black businesses. This dissertation significantly contributes to the Black entrepreneurship literature in the American South by providing neighborhood-level analyses of key economic and social characteristics that …

Breaking Invisibility: Transforming Working Conditions Of Adjunct Faculty In Technical Colleges Through Critical Advocacy Inquiry, Jacqueline Y. Taylor Dec 2017

Breaking Invisibility: Transforming Working Conditions Of Adjunct Faculty In Technical Colleges Through Critical Advocacy Inquiry, Jacqueline Y. Taylor

All Dissertations

Known as "invisible faculty," (Gappa & Leslie, 1993), adjunct or part-time, contingent instructors play a vital role in meeting the needs of two-year colleges. Adjunct faculty members teach over half of the United States' historically underserved college students (Center for Community College Student Engagement [CCCSE], 2014), and are therefore vital to student and college success. Moreover, 58% of all South Carolinian undergraduates attend one of the 16 technical colleges in the South Carolina Technical College System (South Carolina Technical College System [SCTCS], 2016). Additionally, 60% of the faculty members in the SCTCS are adjunct instructors (SCTCS, 2017). Researchers claim adjunct …

Using App Inventor To Explore Low-Achieving Students' Understanding Of Fractions, Lorraine Ann Jacques Dec 2017

Using App Inventor To Explore Low-Achieving Students' Understanding Of Fractions, Lorraine Ann Jacques

All Dissertations

A student's understanding of fraction magnitude impacts his/her understanding of algebra (e.g., Booth & Newton, 2012; Siegler et al., 2012), which then influences his/her likelihood of graduating high school (Orihuela, 2006) or succeeding in higher education (Adelman & United States., 2006; Trusty & Niles, 2004). Literature suggests that students gain this understanding when they create and work with various representations of fractions (e.g., Ainsworth, Bibby, & Wood, 2002; Panaoura et al., 2009; Siegler, Fazio, Bailey, & Zhou, 2013), which can occur when students engage in constructivist activities such as developing games (Kafai, 1996, Apr). This study examines an intervention where …

Factors Of Renewable Energy Deployment And Empirical Studies Of United States Wind Energy, Serife Elif Can Sener

All Dissertations

Considered essential for countries' development, energy demand is growing worldwide. Unlike conventional sources, the use of renewable energy sources has multiple benefits, including increased energy security, sustainable economic growth, and pollution reduction, in particular greenhouse gas emissions. Nevertheless, there is a considerable difference in the share of renewable energy sources in national energy portfolios. This dissertation contains a series of studies to provide an outlook on the existing renewable energy deployment literature and empirically identify the factors of wind energy generation capacity and wind energy policy diffusion in the U.S. The dissertation begins with a systematic literature review to identify …

Getting Connected: Understanding How Digital Tools Support The Collaborative Practices Of Elementary Teachers, Elizabeth Demastes Haun Dec 2017

Getting Connected: Understanding How Digital Tools Support The Collaborative Practices Of Elementary Teachers, Elizabeth Demastes Haun

All Dissertations

This phenomenological study investigated how six elementary teachers are utilizing digital tools and how they perceive these tools can meet their needs for professional collaboration. The study was designed using the theoretical framework of social constructivism and the belief that knowledge is created through social interactions, meaningful experiences, and collaboration with others. Teachers' perceptions about the importance of collaboration and how they utilize technology to access resources, knowledge, and engage in critical dialogue with other professionals were investigated throughout the study. Data analysis using Moustakas' (1994) modification of the Stevick-Colizzi Keen method revealed three overarching themes. Teachers are often choosing …

Factors Influencing Consumer Preferences For Tangible And Intangible Seafood Characteristics And Community Supported Fishery Marketing Outlets, English Lane Ratliff

All Theses

This study utilized an online survey administered to Kentucky and South Carolina in conjunction with discrete choice modeling to examine: i) the impact of several factors including demographic characteristics, purchasing behaviors, and frequency of seafood consumption on consumer's preferences for specific seafood attributes (e.g. fresh over frozen, wild-caught over farm-raised), ii) the impact of the aforementioned consumer characteristics, on the probability that an individual will be interested in joining a CSF arrangement in the future. The results indicate that demographic characteristics, and lifestyle preferences have a statistically significant effect on consumer's preferences for both tangible and intangible seafood characteristics. However, …

Influential Factors In The College Decision-Making Process For Chinese Students Studying In The United States, Madeline Adele Rafi Dec 2017

Influential Factors In The College Decision-Making Process For Chinese Students Studying In The United States, Madeline Adele Rafi

All Theses

For more than 974,000 international students, the United States is the destination of choice to pursue higher education. Although Chinese students account for almost one in three international students in the U.S., there are many unknowns about the influential factors behind their college decision. This phenomenological study explores the self-described most important factors for Chinese students' decision to attend college in the United States and the sources they seek to make their decision. Through interviews with students originally from China who attained their undergraduate degree from a U.S. university, my goal was to understand how individuals arrive at his/her alma …

Tactile Interactions, Lacy Ann Miller Dec 2017

Tactile Interactions, Lacy Ann Miller

All Theses

This installation of utilitarian ceramics developed from the value I place on function, ergonomics, tactility, and surface decoration which abstractly reference the biological structures facilitating our perception. I bring together these elements to playfully explore our relationships with objects - my pots are intended to be filled with food or drink, picked up, passed to a neighbor, and enjoyed in lively daily use. Audiences are familiar with tableware, its use and purpose in the home are common across history and culture. This intimate acquaintance places my work closer to its intended destination- people's lives and hands. Referring to this phenomenon …

Persistence Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Listeria Monocytogenes On The Exterior Of Common Packaging Materials, Duleeka Prasadani Kuruwita Arachchige Dec 2017

Persistence Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Listeria Monocytogenes On The Exterior Of Common Packaging Materials, Duleeka Prasadani Kuruwita Arachchige

All Theses

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE), a major cause of illness, results in 179 million AGE cases every year in the United States. AGE bacteria that have low-infectious dose include E. coli O157:H7 (<10-100 cells) and L. monocytogenes (<1000 cells). Because of their low-infectious dose and high environmental resistance, contaminated surfaces, such as the exterior surface of food packages, could be a source for disease transmission. Our aim was to determine the persistence of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes on three packaging materials - oriented polyethylene terephthalate (OPET), oriented polypropylene (OPP), and nylon-6. Coupons (25 cm2) from each material were sterilized under ultraviolet light for 5 minutes. Spot and spread inoculation was done on treatment coupons with ca. 7 log CFU of a 3-strain-mixture of green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled E. coli O157:H7. All the coupons were incubated at Technical …

The English House Of Gibbs In Peru's Guano Trade In The Nineteenth Century, Megan L. Johnson Dec 2017

The English House Of Gibbs In Peru's Guano Trade In The Nineteenth Century, Megan L. Johnson

All Theses

The English mercantile house of Gibbs emerged alongside many other foreign merchant houses in the years after independence in South American countries, and they were active mostly in Peru, holding a virtual monopoly on Peruvian guano, from 1842 until 1861. Unlike many other merchants who dealt with private companies, Gibbs worked directly on a commission basis with the government of Peru and loaned money to the government in advance of sales. By the time Gibbs left the guano trade in 1861, the government was the stronger party. South American societies regarded the foreign merchants as parasites, “producing and contributing nothing.” …

W.B. Yeats And The Sculpture Of Brancusi, Jack Quin Nov 2017

W.B. Yeats And The Sculpture Of Brancusi, Jack Quin

International Yeats Studies

W.B. Yeats was deeply engaged in a substantial body of art writing centered on the Romanian sculptor. Yeats referred to Constantin Brancusi’s work in AVA, AVB, and in a neglected verse-fragment from the introduction to the 1934 Cuala Press edition of The Words upon the Window-Pane. The aesthetic debates glossed in these references underscore his familiarity, and at times disagreements, with the authoritative writing of Ezra Pound on Brancusi and modern sculpture. By revivifying the connections between Pound’s writing on Vorticist sculpture in the 1910s, on Brancusi in the 1920s, and Yeats’s own partial but astute engagements …

Defining Beauty: The Paterian Yeats, Elizabeth Muller Nov 2017

Defining Beauty: The Paterian Yeats, Elizabeth Muller

International Yeats Studies

This essay contends that W.B. Yeats’s quest for beauty in art has far more in common with Walter Pater’s aesthetic views than is generally acknowledged. This article particularly focuses on Greek art, which provided both writers with paradigms with which to articulate their aesthetic theories. Yeats made ample use of Pater’s distinction between Ionian and Dorian art, and this opposition may in fact lie at the root of Yeats’s esoteric system set down in A Vision and based upon two contrary types of individuals, civilizations, and religions. The iconic power of art as a magical transformer of reality is asserted …

Music, Setting, Voice: Maeterlinck's Pelléas Et Mélisande And Yeats's The Countess Cathleen, Michael Mcateer Nov 2017

Music, Setting, Voice: Maeterlinck's Pelléas Et Mélisande And Yeats's The Countess Cathleen, Michael Mcateer

International Yeats Studies

Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande is one of the finest and most influential works of French Symbolist drama from the 1890s. This essay examines the close affinities between the play and W. B. Yeats’s The Countess Cathleen as it was first performed in Dublin in 1899. In illustrating these affinities, it draws attention to performances of Pelléas et Mélisande that Yeats attended in London in 1898 and 1904. Examining features of Maeterlinck’s play and The Countess Cathleen in close detail, the essay develops Katharine Worth’s general observations on the aspects of theatre that Maeterlinck and Yeats shared. These include music, …
