Impact And Utilization Of Asl Lab Spaces In University Settings, Nathan J. Dutra, Michele Vincent
Impact And Utilization Of Asl Lab Spaces In University Settings, Nathan J. Dutra, Michele Vincent
Journal of Interpretation
American Sign Language (ASL) is a challenging yet rapidly growing language taught at both secondary and higher education levels. Despite its increasing popularity, there is limited literature on utilizing ASL labs as learning centers. This quantitative study examines the implementation of a new ASL lab at a large four-year university in California. It investigates the factors influencing participation, the motivations behind students' involvement, and their perceptions of the lab's effectiveness. Results indicate significant associations between course modality, instructor influence, and lab participation. The study suggests that ASL labs function as cultural and educational spaces that promote visibility of Deaf culture …

Exploring Burnout Impacting Graduate-Level Faculty And Leadership Within Health Profession Education In The United States: A Systematic Scoping Review, Megan Donaldson, Neeti Pathare, Garry Gilbert, Joshua Cleland
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Phenomenon: Full-time academic clinicians who hold faculty appointments in graduate‑level health professions education are expected to fulfill multiple, often competing role demands, including teaching, scholarship, service, clinical practice, and, for some, administrative leadership. These cumulative expectations can place faculty and educational leaders at elevated risk of burnout, particularly emotional exhaustion, with implications for career longevity, institutional stability, and educational quality. Approach: The objective of this systematic scoping review was to map how burnout has been conceptualized, measured, and associated with organizational and role-related factors among full-time graduate-level faculty and educational leaders in health and medical education (health professions) programs. Eligible …

Unmet Needs In Hospital Birth: Perspectives From Birthing Individuals And Opportunities For Occupational Therapy, Susan L. Iliff, Emily Bryant Schreiber
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to explore the services mothers receive during hospital‑based labor and delivery and to identify perceived gaps in inpatient perinatal care. A secondary aim was to examine how these unmet needs may represent opportunities for occupational therapy involvement within hospital maternity settings. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used with an anonymous electronic survey. Participants were eligible if they were 18 years or older and had given birth in a hospital within the past five years. Eighty‑one participants completed the survey, which included demographic questions, satisfaction ratings related to standard‑of‑care …

Systematic Review Of Sports Safety Best Practice Implementation In Non-Scholastic Youth Sport Organizations, Katie Sniffen, Hayley J. Root, Richelle M. Williams
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Non-scholastic youth sports organizations offer competitive and recreational activities to millions of children each year but lack centralized oversight for health and safety policy. Despite the benefits of sport participation, there are inherent risks, including cardiac-, concussion-, heat-, and musculoskeletal-related conditions. Therefore, it is important to understand how youth sports safety policies are implemented in non-scholastic youth sport organizations. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current literature on the implementation of youth sports safety policies in non-scholastic youth sport organizations in the United States. Methods: A computerized search of Cochrane, CINHAL, Ovid Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus …

Development And Initial Validation Of The Observation-Mimicking-Participation-Independent (Ompi) Workplace-Based Assessment Model For Occupational Therapy Fieldwork, Keiko Takeuchi, Hirotaka Onishi
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Workplace-based assessment (WBA) is essential for evaluating clinical competence in occupational therapy and allied health education; however, many existing assessment approaches lack an explicit developmental structure aligned with progressive learning during fieldwork. Competency-based education frameworks emphasize staged skill acquisition, yet operationalized developmental assessment models remain limited. To address this gap, this project aimed to develop the Observation–Mimicking–Participation–Independent (OMPI) model as a theoretically grounded developmental WBA framework and to conduct an initial evaluation of its reliability and educational utility in occupational therapy fieldwork education. Methods: The OMPI model was constructed to reflect staged progression in clinical learning, moving from structured …

The Impact Of Social Expectations And Gender Norms On Women Leaders' Marital And Partner Relationships And Their Influence On Workplace Outcomes, Hedi Kovacs-Resnik
The Impact Of Social Expectations And Gender Norms On Women Leaders' Marital And Partner Relationships And Their Influence On Workplace Outcomes, Hedi Kovacs-Resnik
Economic and Business Review
Leadership sustainability among women remains insufficiently explained in leadership research, as dominant models prioritise workplace factors, neglecting the role of private-life demands. This research explored how social expectations and gender norms influence women's private lives and how the emotional impact spills over into their leadership style and performance, thereby influencing their career progression. Using a qualitative design and thematic analysis of 18 interviews with women in leadership roles, the research examined what it means to lead while also navigating family and relationships.
The findings revealed that the boundaries between women's private and professional lives are almost nonexistent. Professional success often …

Generalized Logit Adjustment: Improved Fine-Tuning By Mitigating Label Bias In Zero-Shot Vision Models, Beier Zhu, Qianru Sun, Xun Yang, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Foundation models like CLIP allow zero-shot transfer on various tasks without additional training data. Yet, the zero-shot performance is less competitive than a fully supervised one. Thus, fine-tuning and ensembling are also commonly adopted to better fit the downstream tasks. However, we argue that such prior work has overlooked the inherent biases in foundation models. Due to the highly imbalanced Web-scale training set, foundation models are inevitably skewed toward frequent semantics, and thus the subsequent fine-tuning or ensembling is still biased. In this study, we systematically examine the biases in foundation models and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed Generalized …

A Principled Approach To Equitable Compensation Undea Principled Approach To Equitable Compensation Under Erisa § 502(A)(3)R Erisa § 502(A)(3), Gabriel Juedemann
University of Chicago Law Review
In many cases, a beneficiary of an employee benefit plan suffers an injury due to a fiduciary’s misfeasance, but the beneficiary does not have a claim under ERISA’s benefit-recovery provision. In these circumstances, the beneficiary’s only path to relief is § 502(a)(3)’s authorization of “appropriate equitable relief.” But whether that provision permits monetary compensation when a beneficiary sues a fiduciary is a question the Supreme Court has not cleanly resolved, and circuit courts have fractured as a result.
This Comment argues that equitable compensation—or surcharge—should be available under § 502(a)(3) when a beneficiary sues a fiduciary, but only under certain …

Msmgoptimizer: An Open-Source R Package And Web Application For Streamlining Life Cycle Inventory Data Automation In Life Cycle Assessment, Philip Duah, Kwame Awuah-Offei
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) compilation is indispensable in any Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study, yet the preparation of inventory data for import into LCA software remains one of the most time‑consuming and error‑prone steps in the LCA workflow. LCI datasets frequently originate from multiple data sources and formats, necessitating automation tools that can optimize inventory data for direct use in LCA modeling platforms. SimaPro, the world's leading LCA modeling platform, for example, requires inventory data to be structured according to a proprietary CSV specification that is labour-intensive to prepare manually. Existing tools remain largely inaccessible to most researchers due to …

The more things change...
We’ve seen a lot of changes on campus over the last year. As the dust settles after all kinds of moves and transitions, now seems as good a time as any to reintroduce the aCAdemicS newsletter. This newsletter, the brainchild of Dr. Peter Grant, originally ran from 2015-2019 (check out older issues in SWOSU’s Digital Commons).
As a writer and writing teacher at heart, I cannot help but try to revive this newsletter to celebrate all things CAS and document the amazing things happening in our college. In between newsletters, you can also find SWOSU …
