Co-Measure: Developing An Assessment For Student Collaboration In Steam Activities, Danielle Herro, Cassie F. Quigley, Jessica Andrews, Girlie Delacruz

Background

The shortage of skilled workers choosing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers in the USA and worldwide has fueled a movement towards STEAM, in which the “A” addresses the arts and humanities. STEAM education has been proposed as a way to offer relevant problems to solve while drawing on creative and collaborative skills to increase interest and engagement in these fields. Despite the interest in increasing STEAM globally, research on the efficacy of instructional approaches, including ways to assess collaborative problem solving (CPS), is lacking.

Results

This paper reports the development of a rubric, named Co-Measure, for researchers …

Correlation Of Trichome Density And Length And Polyphenol Fluorescence With Susceptibility Of Five Cucurbits To Didymella Bryoniae, Gabriel Rennberger, A. P. Keinath, M. Hess Aug 2017

Correlation Of Trichome Density And Length And Polyphenol Fluorescence With Susceptibility Of Five Cucurbits To Didymella Bryoniae, Gabriel Rennberger, A. P. Keinath, M. Hess

Publications

The fungal pathogen Didymella bryoniae causes gummy stem blight and black rot on a broad spectrum of cucurbits. However the substantial differences in susceptibility among Cucurbitaceae are not well studied. Susceptibility was characterized with muskmelon (Cucumis melo), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo), and zucchini (C. pepo). Lesion diameters on leaf disks inoculated with agar plugs were measured 7 days after inoculation, and the necrotized areas of leaf disks inoculated with conidial suspensions were measured 48 h after inoculation (hai). For each species, the number of trichomes …

Muslim Work Ethics: Relationships With Religious Orientations And The “Perfect Man” (Ensan-E Kamel) In Managers And Staff In Iran, Nima Ghorbani, P. J. Watson, Maryam Karimpour, Zhuo Job Chen Aug 2017

Muslim Work Ethics: Relationships With Religious Orientations And The “Perfect Man” (Ensan-E Kamel) In Managers And Staff In Iran, Nima Ghorbani, P. J. Watson, Maryam Karimpour, Zhuo Job Chen

Publications

Weber’s association of a work ethic with Protestantism has been extended to religions, including Islam, more generally. Managers and staff in a bank and department store in Tehran responded to Muslim religiousness measures along with the multidimensional work ethics profile (MWEP). The MWEP is a 7-factor instrument that records Weber’s interpretation of work ethics. Intrinsic, extrinsic personal, and extrinsic cultural religious orientations predicted a higher work ethic. Two extrinsic cultural religious orientation factors exhibited especially strong connections with MWEP factors. The morality/ethics MWEP factor most consistently predicted Muslim commitments. Integrative self-knowledge and self-control served as empirical markers of an Iranian …

Moving Composition: Writing In A Mobile World, Joshua Paul Herron Aug 2017

Moving Composition: Writing In A Mobile World, Joshua Paul Herron

All Dissertations

We live in an increasingly mobile society on many levels. Mobile devices, including the smartphone, tablet, and wearables, allow for composing and communicating from anywhere and in new ways, a phenomenon that is especially deserving of attention by composition studies scholars and teachers. Mobile composition processes are impacted by the symmetry of humans and technology as each equally shapes one another. This interplay of mobile devices (including wearables) and humans impacts composition ecologies, processes, and definitions of writing. The role of analog mobile writers also informs our current practices and approaches to a mobile composition as many writers have sought …

All Dissertations

A breast tumor with a histology report that lacks Estrogen Receptor, Progesterone Receptor, and Human Epidermal Growth Receptor 2/neu is identified as a Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). Women with TNBC compared to non-TNBC patients have 50% increased risk for all-cause mortality and TNBC is reported to have poor survival compared to other Breast Cancer sub-types. TNBC is an aggressive disease with varied outcomes among race/ethnicities in the United States. Chapter one is an introduction chapter that introduces the problem statement, highlights the significance of the problem, provides the theoretical framework along with its constructs and how it supports the …

Look Who's Talking: A Multi-Case Study Of In-Service English Language Arts Teachers' Conceptions And Uses Of Discussion In The Secondary Classroom, John D. Mcelroy Aug 2017

Look Who's Talking: A Multi-Case Study Of In-Service English Language Arts Teachers' Conceptions And Uses Of Discussion In The Secondary Classroom, John D. Mcelroy

All Dissertations

Educational scholars and practitioners recognize that classroom discussion offers great promise for helping students develop content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a variety of meta-cognitive and process skills associated with learning content knowledge and disciplinary processes. Despite this research-based and anecdotal consensus regarding the value of discussion, an equally extensive body of research shows that discussion is not used in U.S. classrooms as consistently or effectively as it might be. This study sought to examine this issue by exploring the relationship between in-service English language arts teachers' beliefs about discussion, their goals for the use of discussion, and their actual …
