Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), commonly used phthalate esters (PAEs), are persistent pollutants found in landfills due to the increasing accumulation of plastic waste. To develop an effective bioremediation tool, in this study, we explored the responses of indigenous bacterial communities in landfill waste covers to PAE contamination and identified and isolated the keystone species that play roles in PAE degradation to form PAE-degrading consortium. Microcosm experiments at room temperature (27-30°C) and 37°C showed rapid removal of 300 mg/kg DBP, with 95% removal in 14 days individually and 90% in 21 days as a mixture. DEHP at 300 …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Background: Dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the types of microorganisms in a person’s natural f lora, associated with several diseases like asthma, type 2 diabetes, and atopic dermatitis (AD). Reports indicate that Staphylococcus aureuscolonizes about 60%-100% of AD skin, causing barrier dysfunction through virulence factors such as superantigens, enzymes, and other proteins. These factors disrupt skin homeostasis by affecting keratinocytes and immune cells. Additionally, dysbiosis in AD skin is marked by a reduction in commensal microbes like Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium spp. In recent years, probiotics have been studied in both live bacteria and bacterial lysate forms. Most studies …

Culture Sustainability Through Storytelling : A Study Of Patricia Riley’S “Wisteria” And “Damping Down The Road”, Ankita Das, Priyanka Chhaparia

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In the late 1980s, the United Nations introduced a comprehensive vision of sustainable development, encompassing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental balance. However, the crucial role of culture within development has very often been overlooked. Contemporary insights emphasize that culture is integral to sustainable development. This paper, through an analysis of two short stories by Native American author Patricia Riley, sheds light on the significance of storytelling as a fundamental element of culture. It explores how these narratives emphasize the need to cultivate a culturally aware society and how ‘storytelling’ contributes to cultural preservation and identity. Focusing specifically on the …

Collaborative Place-Making : Some Theoretical Perspectives On Sense Of Place As A Motivation For Participation, Lakshika Meetiyagoda, Palpola Kankanamge Senevirathna Mahamana, Susantha Amarawickrama, Astrid Ley

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Collaborative planning is emerging as a novel approach to stakeholder participation, to create new values and products within urban planning. However, the motivations behind participating in the planning process have been limitedly addressed. Fainstein, Healey, Forester, and many planning theorists argue the necessity of public participation in urban development. Nevertheless, project-affected people may consider it a time-wasting, disinteresting and frustrating process. Therefore, the identification of significant motivation for community participation is important. This paper argues that sense of place is a significant motivator of community participation in collaborative place-making. These arguments draw upon planning theories, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and …
