Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Infectious disease modeling plays a crucial role in understanding and managing epidemic outbreaks. Mathematical models, combined with control strategies, can help guide effective interventions and policy making. In this study, we examined an epidemic model, so-called SV IHR, which is an extended SIR model with additional states to incorporate vaccination and treatment. Our goal is to determine parameters known as controls; specifically, the vaccination proportion, through the framework of the optimal control problems. We defined an objective function and explored the control strategies that optimize it. Numerical simulations were then performed to illustrate the dynamics of the epidemic both with …

Legally Literate But Disempowered: Urban Refugees And National Screening Mechanism In Thailand, Andrew Wai Phyo Kyaw Jan 2024

Legally Literate But Disempowered: Urban Refugees And National Screening Mechanism In Thailand, Andrew Wai Phyo Kyaw

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation examines the relationship between legal literacy, empowerment, and protection outcomes among urban refugees and asylum seekers in Thailand, focusing on the 2019 National Screening Mechanism (NSM). Thailand, a non-signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and hosting about 5,500 refugees mainly in Bangkok, lacks formal refugee laws. Its recent NSM reflects limited progress in regional protection mechanisms, functioning within a framework that emphasizes state security over human security. The study posits that urban refugees understand the law, like the NSM, but remain powerless because Thailand's approach prioritizes security over protection. This study addresses three interconnected research questions that investigate …

A Customized Compartmental Epidemiological Model With Vaccination Groups For Covid-19 And Its Application To Pricing Pandemic Insurance Policies, Om Kanchanasakdichai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study presents an agent-based modeling framework designed to evaluate epidemic-responsive insurance mechanisms under behavioral and supply-side constraints. The model does not rely on empirical calibration or external datasets; instead, it explores how stylized agent behavior and systemic pressures jointly influence insurance uptake, coverage efficiency, and policy outcomes. The simulation integrates a stochastic SEIR+ disease progression structure with individual-level decision making shaped by perceived risk salience, scarcity sensitivity, and delayed response behavior. A two stage evaluation process is implemented: first, a global sensitivity analysis identifies the key drivers of agent and system behavior; second, a strategic policy simulation compares the …

Exploring Utilization Patterns Of Thailand's Three Main Public Health Insurance Scheme Beneficiaries, Pakhun Angsupan Jan 2024

Exploring Utilization Patterns Of Thailand's Three Main Public Health Insurance Scheme Beneficiaries, Pakhun Angsupan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The three main public health insurance schemes in Thailand include the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS), the Social Security Scheme (SSS), and the Civil Servant Medical Benefit Scheme (CSMBS), which the schemes cover approximately 97% of the population. However, a number of individuals reported not having utilized the schemes during their last visit to a medical facility. Non-utilization of free healthcare raises a question regarding the ability to access and utilize public health insurance schemes and whether or not they are able to appropriately provide horizontal equity. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of demographic and health-related …

Validation Of A Pseudotype-Based Serum Neutralization Test Forpeste Des Petits Ruminants Virus (Pprv) Specific Antibody In Goat Sera, Suphatcha Mahawattana

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a transboundary viral disease in small ruminants, caused by a morbillivirus called peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV). Recently, FAO and WOAH have set the goal to eradicate the disease in 2030. To maintain disease vigilance, the Department of Livestock Development conducts regular screenings for anti-PPRV antibodies using a commercially available competitive ELISA (cELISA). However, limitation from its window of uncertainty could lead to inconclusive result. In this study, a recently developed pseudotype-based neutralization test was validated against a large number of known positive and negative samples. In comparison with the cELISA, from 416 …

Proteomic Analysis Of Canine Reproductive Protein Profiles In Relation To Stage Of Oocyte Development, Larindhorn Udomthanaisit Jan 2024

Proteomic Analysis Of Canine Reproductive Protein Profiles In Relation To Stage Of Oocyte Development, Larindhorn Udomthanaisit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The domestic dog has a unique reproductive physiology in which oocytes are ovulated at an immature stage and complete nuclear maturation within the oviduct approximately 48–72 hours after ovulation. This thesis aimed to investigate proteomic changes in both serum and oviductal secretions associated with oocyte development, using a combination of natural and hormonally induced ovulation models. To evaluate dynamic changes in serum proteins across the estrous cycle, samples from healthy bitches in four stages—anestrus, proestrus, estrus, and diestrus—were analyzed, revealing 38 significantly altered proteins. Among these, eight exhibited stage-specific expression patterns, including HES2, ADGRA3, and SWI5 in anestrus; polycystin receptors …

Selection Of Lactic Acid Bacteria Probiotics From Thai-Chick And Their Efficacy In Restoring Gut Microbiome And Salmonella Reduction In Broiler Challenged With Salmonella Typhimurium, Benjamas Khurajog

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food safety, and sustainable poultry farming are critical global concerns driving the exploration of probiotics as alternatives to antibiotics. This study focused on the isolation, characterization, and evaluation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains and the performance of two probiotics—ProCU (a blend of locally isolated LAB strains) and TOP GUT (a commercial Clostridium butyricum product)—in mitigating Salmonella infection, improving growth performance, and modulating the gut microbiota and resistome in broiler chickens. From 91 LAB isolates identified in chicken feces across Thailand, five strains (Ligilactobacillus salivarius BF12 and Pediococcus acidilactici BF9, BF14, BYF20, and BYF26) exhibited strong tolerance …

Strengthening Deep Learning Model In Forecasting Of Covid-19 Epidemics In Selected Countries, Warapree Tangseefa

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Accurate forecasting of COVID-19 case dynamics is essential for facilitating robust public health strategies and interventions is critical for effective public health planning and response. This study introduced novel deep learning models that integrate autocorrelation (ACF) and partial autocorrelation (PACF) into LSTM and GRU networks to improve forecasts of cumulative confirmed, recovered, and death cases. Six variants—ACF/PACF-enhanced LSTM and GRU models—were compared with standard LSTM, GRU, and ARIMA across eleven countries during non-vaccination, vaccination, and entire study period. The results show that integrating ACF and/or PACF features notably enhances forecasting accuracy. ACF-PACF-GRU outperformed baseline models in predicting confirmed and death …
