Structure Of Alpine Plant Communities Near King's Peak, Uinta Mountains, Utah, George M. Briggs, James A. Macmahon
Structure Of Alpine Plant Communities Near King's Peak, Uinta Mountains, Utah, George M. Briggs, James A. Macmahon
Great Basin Naturalist
A study was made at 18 sites with elevations between 3512 and 3768 m in the Uinta Mountains, Utah. Sites were small in extent but typified vegetation patterns found in the Uintas. Standing crop, species composition (based on dry weight), and values for several physical parameters were determined at each site. Simple linear regressions performed between the various biotic and abiotic characters revealed significant relationships between the characteristics of rocks visible at the surface (the number, size, and variation in size) and vegetation cover. This relationship was probably due to the burial of rocks as a region became vegetated. Bray …

Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Not long after World War II came to a close, there was a burgeoning of interest in area studies, which prompted many academic libraries in the United States to embark on extensive acquisitions programs to obtain foreign books for their universities. At the Berkeley campus of the University of California, it was recognized that there was a need on the West Coast for a strong collection of East Asian research materials. This led to the establishment of the East Asiatic Library (EAL) in 1947 as a separate branch on campus. The first few years at the Library were a period …
A Hidden-Line Algorithm For Hyperspace, Robert P. Burton, David R. Smith
A Hidden-Line Algorithm For Hyperspace, Robert P. Burton, David R. Smith
Faculty Publications
An object-space hidden-line algorithm for higher-dimensional scenes has been designed and implemented. Scenes consist of convex hulls of any dimension, each of which is compared against the edges of all convex hulls not eliminated by a hyperdimensional clipper, a depth test after sorting and a minimax text. Hidden and visible elements are determined in accordance with the dimensionality of the selected viewing hyperspace. When shape alone is the attribute of interest, hidden-line elimination need be performed only in that hyperspace. The algorithm is of value in the production of shadows of hyperdimensional models, including but not limited to four-dimensional space-time …
The Elizabethan Clerk Of The Privy Council, F. J. Platt
The Elizabethan Clerk Of The Privy Council, F. J. Platt
Quidditas
One of the least understood facts of Elizabethan administrative history is the importance of the clerkship of the Privy Council. Considered a position of "no small esteem," this "office was singularly rich in men of distinction." Indeed, with the exception of a select few privy councilors, it was the Council clerks who handled the lion's share of the day-to-day business of English government.

On The Syntax Of The Provençal Possessives, Frede Jensen
Quidditas
It is well-known to anyooone involved in the pursuit of foreign language study that possessive adjectives serve to express a variety of relationships which are often far removed from the basic notion of possession. A Frenchman calls "his" not only the things he owns (ma maison, ma voiture, mes livres, mon argent) and the ingredients that constitute the physical, mental or moral make-up of his personality (ma vigueur, ma bonté, mon intelligence, mon calme, etc.), but he also extends his ownership, as it were, to the circle of people he comes into contact with and to a variety of …
The Zodiac Man In Medieval Medical Astrology, Charles Clark
The Zodiac Man In Medieval Medical Astrology, Charles Clark
Quidditas
A naked male figure was a familiar illustration in many medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Standing with his legs and arms slightly spread, the twelve images or names of the zodiac were superimposed on his body, from his head (Aries) to his feet (Pisces). Used as a quick reference by physicians, barber-surgeons, and even laymen, the figure indicated the part of the body which was "ruled" by a specific sign of the zodiac. Once the correct sign was determined for the particular part of the body, the proper time for surgery, bloodletting, administration of medication, or even the cutting of hair …
From Medieval To Renaissance: Paradigm Shifts And Artistic Problems In English Renaissance Drama, John Boni
From Medieval To Renaissance: Paradigm Shifts And Artistic Problems In English Renaissance Drama, John Boni
Quidditas
In describing the change from Medieval to Renaissance, Theodore Spencer writes;
There finally came a time when realism, at first connected inextricably with religion, was used for its own sake. What we call the Renaissance began at that moment.
For Spencer, "realism" denotes an increased concern with depicting the actual world itself. As an illustration, one may cite the exclamation attributed to Paolo Uccello, "What a wonderful thing is this perspective!", an exclamation over a technique which aided him in more accurate representation of the world as he had begun to perceive it.

Observations On Pulci's Reworking Of The Anonymous Orlando, Madison U. Sowell
Quidditas
As a preface to the observations which follow on Luigi Pulci's treatment of the anonymous Orlando in the composition of his chief work, Il Morgante, it should be noted that in the past four decades several scholars in Italy have published significant books on Pulci's chivalric poem. Giovanni Getto published the first edition of his renowned Studio sul "Morgante" in 1944; Gaetano Mariani produced his long comparative essay on Il Morgante e i cantari trecenteschi in 1958; in 1967, the year of the second edition of Getto's study, Angelo Gianni gave us his interpretation of the Morgante's two …
Papers Of Albert Gallatin: Project Description, Barbara Oberg
Papers Of Albert Gallatin: Project Description, Barbara Oberg
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
The publication of the writings of Albert Gallatin in selected printed volumes is both overdue and particularly timely. In order to come to an understanding of the formative years of the American republic, scholars need to have available the materials of the respected second-level political and administrative leadership of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Of this second-level group of American statesmen, few were so highly regarded and influential as Albert Gallatin. The aim of the present scholarly effort is to publish in a six volume annotated edition the most important public and private papers of a figure important …

A Question Of Influence: Two Sixteenth-Century Lutheran Music Sources, Laura Youens
A Question Of Influence: Two Sixteenth-Century Lutheran Music Sources, Laura Youens
Quidditas
In 1956, the eminent German musicologist Lothar Hoffmann-Erbrecht published a catalogue of the manuscript Rostock, University Library, MS Mus. Saec. XVI-29 (henceforth Rostock 49). This large musical source was compiled and copied in 1566 by Jacob Praetorius (c. 1530-1586), principal organist at St. Jakobi in Hamburg from 1558 to his death. According to the lengthy Latin preface to his Opus musicum excellens et novum, Rostock 49 originally comprised eight groups of compositions organized by genre. Only four of these groups are extant, and, from an inscription on the binding, it is clear that the other four sections were bound …

The Scouting Difference: Development, Direction, And Evaluation Of A Documentary Film, Kirk E. Strickland
The Scouting Difference: Development, Direction, And Evaluation Of A Documentary Film, Kirk E. Strickland
Theses and Dissertations
There is a need for supplemental reference material of an in-depth, specific nature to suggest methods of general application to the novice film director. Because film production is such a highly collaborative art, craft, and business with limited opportunities open to beginners, the novice director can benefit a great deal from the documented experiences of another. This study will provide insight into the practical role of the film director in motion picture production. In this way, this study can influence directorial practice in a positive manner by offering a forewarning of potential production challenges and help the novice to avoid …

The Bridge
Since I have been working with the Danish Immigrant Archives, and especially with the Danish Immigrant Archival Listing project, it has become increasingly clear to me that those immigrants who become a part of the Danish Church represent but a small fraction of the Danes who came to this country. Sometime in the Danish Church we have, I fear, been so wrapped up in ourselves that we have lost sight of the great majority of Danes who emigrated to America and who, in one way or another have left their mark. Examples are numerous but I think of one little …
Scandinavia And The Prairie School: Chicago Landscape Artist Jens Jensen, J. R. Christianson
Scandinavia And The Prairie School: Chicago Landscape Artist Jens Jensen, J. R. Christianson
The Bridge
The "prairie" was a powerful symbol in Chicago around the tum of the present century. Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and others used it to characterize a new type of architecture with strong horizontal lines and free flowing interior spaces. Poets like Vachel Lindsay and Carl Sandburg sang the glories of a new breed of prairie man and woman, growing like Abraham Lincoln out of the environment of the American heartland. Among landscape artists, Jens Jensen was the leading figure of the Prairie School. He designed "prairie parks" for the city of Chicago, and landscapes appropriate to the new "prairie …
Is There A Significant Relationship Between Teacher Credibility And Teacher Effectiveness?, Blake D. Madsen
Is There A Significant Relationship Between Teacher Credibility And Teacher Effectiveness?, Blake D. Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis was designed to determine if a significant relationship exists between credibility and effectiveness in seminary teachers.
Teacher credibility was determined by an adaptation of McCroskey's semantic differential scales used for measuring teacher credibility. Teacher effectiveness was determined by a matching scripture test.
Chi square tests produced significant relationships between teacher credibility and the following: student religiosity, teacher influence and class attitude. The tests also produced significant relationships between teacher effectiveness and these variables: sex, student religiosity, teacher influence and class attitude. These relationships largely were what one would expect. The chi square test also produced a significant relationship …

Albert Gallatin: America's Geneva Connection, William B. Lloyd
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
In February 1801, Washington, the muddy new capital of the United States, was alive with rumors of approaching conflict over the presidency. Despite a strongly anti-Federalist popular vote, electors were evenly divided between Thomas Jefferson, Republican, and Aaron Burr, so that the choice was thrown into the out-going, Federalist controlled House of Representatives. Plans to have the House rule out Jefferson and Burr in favor of a Federalist stalwart were openly discussed. 1,500 Republicans of Maryland and Virginia were reported to be preparing to descend on Washington to assassinate any man thus chosen. The Governor of Maryland was urged to …

Antonio Possevino, S.J. As A Counter-Reformation Critic Of The Arts, John Patrick Donnelly S.J.
Quidditas
The Protestant Reformation called into question many traditions and practices of the Church, including the traditional relation of art to religion. Many Protestant theologians, for instance Calvin and especially Zwingli, condemned religious statues and art as idolatrous or superstitious, partly on the basis of Old Testament prohibitions. Luther and Lutherans approved of religious paintings but rejected the cult of the saints that had figured so largely in medieval and Renaissance religious art. In the Lutheran tradition religious art was more closely tied to the Bible, another manifestation fo the sola scriptura principle. In Catholic circles as well there arose lively …
