Toward An Understanding Of The Heart -- A Scriptural And Psychological Perspective, Paul F. Cook
Toward An Understanding Of The Heart -- A Scriptural And Psychological Perspective, Paul F. Cook
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
The word heart was used by the Hebrews and Greeks as an equivalent of our modern words of mind, emotion, will and personality. The Lord who revealed his ideas about the heart anciently has continued to use this word in modern revelations, thus raising the possibility that it is still useful to us. This paper defines heart, examines seven ways a treasure is established in the heart, and draws implications for a theory of personality and psychotherapy. Recommendations for research are also included.

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds
The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
This presentation points to socialists’ mistaken assumptions of a malleable and perfectible human nature as an insuperable reason for the inevitable failure of socialist systems. It also points to socialist and liberal dependence on declarations of human rights as ineffective protections for human freedom—protections which can only be maintained in constitutionalist systems with deeper structural safeguards against tyranny.

The Diffusion Thermoeffect In Ternary, Nonelectrolyte Liquid Mixtures, Richard L. Rowley, Gerald Platt, Tevin Vongvanich
Faculty Publications
Expressions for that portion of the heat flux which is due to composition gradients in multicomponent nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures have been formulated in terms of heats of transport. The resultant thermal energy equation in combination with component mass balance equations constitute coupled partial differential equations descriptive of the diffusion thermoeffect in liquid mixtures. These equations were solved with a double perturbation technique subject to initial and boundary conditions consistent with experimental design conditions considered appropriate for successful measurement of multicomponent heats of transport. Based on the adiabatic type cell, the expected temperature response, dependent on cell variables, experimental conditions, and …

Utah Plant Types—Historical Perspective 1840 To 1981—Annotated List, And Bibliography, Stanley L. Welsh
Great Basin Naturalist
Reviewed are the 144 collectors and 167 authors of 1073 Utah vascular plant types for the period from 1840 to 1981. Historical perspective yields evidence of geography of collection activities by botanists who penetrated the boundaries of the state, and of shifting centers of emphasis in the study of Utah plants from a classical taxonomic standpoint. Philosophy and influence of contemporary authors and collectors is discussed as they affect taxonomy of Utah plants in our first 142 years. A short biographical account of Marcus Eugene Jones and his interaction with other American botanists is included. The annotated checklist includes bibliographical …

Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower
Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
This paper suggests procedures for testing behavioral theory with scripture. A theory of self-betrayal (Warner, et. al., 1979) is examined against the series of self-betrayal "strategies" Cain used to avoid the consequences of killing his brother Abel. The theory fits and explains well the behavior of Cain. A second example of testing theory with scripture deals with guidelines for assessing fundamental assumptions upon which theories of behavior are constructed.
