Albert Gallatin, The Man Of Peace, William D. Carter Iii
Albert Gallatin, The Man Of Peace, William D. Carter Iii
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
On July 15, 1780, a nineteen-year old graduate of the Academy of Geneva, after forty-nine days voyage on the American vessel Kitty, put ashore at Cape Anne, Massachusetts, and on a borrowed horse rode twenty-six miles to Boston. Thus began the fortunes in the New World of Albert Gallatin who, until his death at 89 years, was to make an outstanding contribution to the life of his adopted country. Thanks to the systematic organization of his correspondence, now available in the New York Historical Society, and the dissemination of microfilms of this correspondence made possible by New York University, it …

Albert Gallatin, 176101849, A Genevan In The American Enlightenment: An Essay In Interpretation, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Albert Gallatin has been called "America's Forgotten Statesman."1 A review of scholarly and public endeavors shows, however, that he has received serious attention, especially in recent decades. Best known is, perhaps, the excellent biography by Raymond Walters Jr. of 1957, a concise, learned, and balanced portrait.2 In 1958 Rutgers University Press published Alexander Balinky's Albert Gallatin Fiscal Theories and Policies, a comprehensive study. Although Balinky profoundly misunderstood .Gallatin in favor of Hamiltonian programs, he offered nevertheless a scholarly treatise to be reckoned with.3 In 1963 Gayle Thornbrough edited the Correspondence of John Badollet and Albert Gallatin …

Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott
Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott
The Bridge
"The Dane Peter Lassen," or " Peter Lassen, a Danish Blacksmith," appears in almost every memoir dealing with early northern California. His Danishness was obvious, though no one bothers to explain why. Was his speech the telltale feature? The man was almost thirty years of age when he left Denmark, and he had had no opportunity to learn English while his tongue was ductile. He came to California in the spring of 1840, at the beginning of a decade of decision. At that moment Indians inhabited the land, Russians were still established on the California coast, Mexicans held title to …

Language Transition And Danish Children's Schools In The U.S., Ejnar Farstrup
The Bridge
Very few Danish immigrants who came to the United States just prior to and immediately following the beginning of the Twentieth Century were acquainted with the English language. Immigrants of every ethnic group have countless tales, some comic and some rather serious, of the difficulties which befell them. Years after their arrival, most of them could regale themselve at length with stories of misinterpretations and the blending of language from their own experiences. A good sense of humor carried most of them through. Others succumbed to a nostalgia which drove them back to the homeland. Still others, who might have …

The Bridge
A jackrabbit was sunning himself on a rock in the warm March sun, stretched out and went to sleep. Suddenly a noise awakened him and he jumped quickly away at right angles to where the noise had originated. From a safe distance he stopped, sat up to see what had disturbed his siesta, wiggling his ears and nose as he watched another of those strange creatures going by his sunning rock. What were they? They had been passing in increasing numbers, and had actually made parallel tracks right by his rock!
A Sampler, Carl Hansen
A Sampler, Carl Hansen
The Bridge
Note: Seventy years after his death the Danish-born writer Carl Hansen (1860-1916) remains, among those who read Danish, a highly valued interpreter of the immigrant experience in the United States. Hansen was the subject of two articles in earlier issue (Vol. 2:1, 1979) of The Bridge. His short stories and one novel are together a landmark in the American literature written in Danish , but the books have become inaccessible to many and, as to language, closed to a large audience who would appreciate his ability to sketch Danish-American personalities and lives. In Tyler, Minnesota, where he lived until 1910, …
The Role Of Economic Analysis In Public Range Management, B. Delworth Gardner
The Role Of Economic Analysis In Public Range Management, B. Delworth Gardner
Faculty Publications
Economic analysis has a vital, if not indispensable, role to play in the management decisions of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM} if the national welfare is to be served effectively. This rather sweeping conclusion is justified by the nature of the management problems faced by the BLM and by the unique view of the world provided by the field of economics.

Electrophoresis Of Isoenzymes Of 16 Western Shrubs: Technique Development, R. L. Leonard, E. D. Mcarthur, D. J. Weber, B. W. Wood
Great Basin Naturalist
Wildland shrubs have gained considerable attention in recent years due to increasing recognition of their values as animal feed, as wildlife habitat, and for land reclamation. Better management of the shrub resource will be possible through clearer taxonomic identification and better understanding of phylogenetic relationships. This study applied polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and further developed this technique to address genetic relationships among 16 paired shrub species (genera: Artemisia, Chrysothamnus, Atriplex, Ceratoides, Sarcobatus, Purshia, Cowania, and Cercocarpus [Compositae, Chenopodiaceae, Rosaceae]). Cluster analysis of similarity values for total protein and 14 isoenzyme systems gave patterns of species relationships expected from classical morphological grounds …

Contributions To The Life History Of Sacramento Perch, Archoplites Interruptus, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, Steven Vigg, Paul A. Kucera
Contributions To The Life History Of Sacramento Perch, Archoplites Interruptus, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, Steven Vigg, Paul A. Kucera
Great Basin Naturalist
During a two-year period (1976–1977), 180 Sacramento perch (Archoplites interruptus) were sampled from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, on a monthly basis using several capture methods in all lake areas. Age and growth determinations of these fish were inconsistent with previous research on this species. Sacramento perch are entirely carnivorous, adults feeding primarily on tui chub (Gila bicolor). Fish accounted for 6 percent of the diet (by volume) of Sacramento perch less than 300 mm fork length, and 98 percent for those exceeding 300 mm. Amphipods, Odonata, and Chironomidae composed 6.3, 5.7, and 1.8 percent, respectively, of the …

Bionomics And Control Of The Walnut Spanworm, Phigalia Plumogeraria (Hulst), On Bitterbrush In Utah, Malcolm M. Furniss, Gordon A. Van Epps
Great Basin Naturalist
In 1979, the walnut spanworm defoliated a 1 ha bitterbrush seed orchard near Nephi, Utah. No seed was produced for two years thereafter due to feeding damage. Life stages were described and illustrated. The female is brachypterous and incapable of flight. First instar larvae readily drop on their silk threads and probably are dispersed by wind. The insect has one annual generation. Moths laid an average of 159 eggs per cluster in April; larvae began to appear in early May and matured by the first week of June. The pupal period extended from June until mid-April. The parasitic bombyliid, Villa …
