The East Asian Library In The Twenty-First Century, Izumi Koide
The East Asian Library In The Twenty-First Century, Izumi Koide
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Celebrating the one-hundredth issue of the CEAL Bulletin is, I believe, a good opportunity to think about the future of the East Asian library. This essay is, however, not to forecast the future course of the East Asian library, but rather to present a vision, or to throw out some thoughts on desirable future developments in the East Asian library.

Temporal Variation In The Diets Of California Quail In Western Oregon, Kevin L. Blakely, John A. Crawford, Russell M. Oates
Temporal Variation In The Diets Of California Quail In Western Oregon, Kevin L. Blakely, John A. Crawford, Russell M. Oates
Great Basin Naturalist
This study was designed to describe dietary changes by comparison of information on long-term diet and plant food availability of California Quail (Callipepla californica) in western Oregon. We examined crops from 222 California Quail collected in 1976–78 and 1985–87. Diets included 14 key plant foods (annual frequency > 15%) among 53 taxa consumed; 10 of the 14 key foods were similar between time periods. Collectively, key foods contributed 87% of the diet by aggregate dry mass during 1985–87; six species of legumes (family Leguminosae) composed 67% of diet. Relative rankings of availabilities of key foods were similar between 1976–78 …
Summer Habitat Use And Selection By Female Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) In Oregon, Michael A. Gregg, John A. Crawford, Martin S. Drut
Summer Habitat Use And Selection By Female Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) In Oregon, Michael A. Gregg, John A. Crawford, Martin S. Drut
Great Basin Naturalist
Cover types and vegetative characteristics (e.g., grasses, forbs, shrubs) used by female Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) during summer were compared with available habitat on two study areas in southeastern Oregon. Broodless hens, which constituted 114 of the 125 (91%) radio-marked hens studied, selected big (Artemisia tridentata subspp.) and low sagebrush (A. arbuscular) cover types at both study areas. At Hart Mountain, broodless hens did not select specific vegetative characteristics within cover types. However, at Jackass Creek, forb cover was greater (P = .004) at broodless hen sites than at random locations. Differences in habitat …
The Milton Bunker Hunt Case
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
In the Prelaw Seminar (Student Development 198R) taught by the prelaw advisor at BYU, students have the opportunity to study a variety of specialties in law. This one-credit course is designed as a six-semester academic-vocational course that covers Constitutional, Environmental, International, Criminal, and Family Law and the Supreme Court. During the first-block (8-week) course, speakers present their professional experiences in the type of law being introduced that semester. This vocational insight is augmented by the use of a 11NutsheW text which constitutes the academic portion of the course and is the only part which is tested on at the end …
Libyan Law Nationalizes Milton Bunker Hunt Oil Fields, Christopher Kyler
Libyan Law Nationalizes Milton Bunker Hunt Oil Fields, Christopher Kyler
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Conflicts steadily rise as multinational enterprises become more widespread throughout the world. As companies expand from their homelands into foreign lands, which do not always have the same economic systems, new laws create greater risks and various conflicts. The lack of clear international law only heightens the conflicts and opinions of those involved. Such is the case of a United States citizen, Milton Bunker Hunt, who owned and operated oil fields located in Libya. The real issue of this case is whether or not Libya was justified in this taking, and this can only be judged by the laws in …
The Bunker Hunt Case, Victor Sipos
The Bunker Hunt Case, Victor Sipos
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
In recent decades, US courts have become more responsive to the ever-increasing commercialization of the world and more sensitive to the rights of US investors engaging in international markets. International trade has always posed risks to investors working under different legal systems within separate sovereign nations. The modern US stance on international law provides legal rights to US citizens which didn't exist even a quarter-century ago. The greatest concern of international investment is a foreign sovereign's power to nationalize interests within its boundaries without properly compensating the investor. In 1973, the Libyan extension of Milton Bunker Hunt oil interests encountered …
Mormon As Editor: A Study In Colophons, Headers, And Source Indicators, Thomas W. Mackay
Mormon As Editor: A Study In Colophons, Headers, And Source Indicators, Thomas W. Mackay
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The Book of Mormon contains various colophons and source indicators that signal documents or authors that Mormon and the writers of the small plates used, quoted, paraphrased, or summarized in composing the final text. Some of these headers have been italicized and separated out by the printer; others form an integral part of the text but could as well have been separated and italicized. Mormon’s extensive notation of sources is another set of evidence for the intricate and complex nature of the text and, simultaneously, of the magnitude of Mormon’s work as an ancient editor and historian.
Lehi's Dream Of The Tree Of Life: Springboard To Prophecy, Corbin T. Volluz
Lehi's Dream Of The Tree Of Life: Springboard To Prophecy, Corbin T. Volluz
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Lehi’s dream of the tree of life is well known in Latter- day Saint circles. Its relationship to the vision of Nephi (1 Nephi 11–14), however, may not be so well known. This paper examines the proposition that Nephi’s vision was an expansive, prophetic interpretation of Lehi’s dream of the tree of life; gives an alternate interpretation of Lehi’s dream as a guide to the afterlife; and links Lehi’s dream, the Garden of Eden, and the temple.
The Radical Reformation Of The Reorganization Of The Restoration: Recent Changes In The Rlds Understanding Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
The Radical Reformation Of The Reorganization Of The Restoration: Recent Changes In The Rlds Understanding Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Beginning in the 1960s, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS [now Community of Christ]) has modified its understanding of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith’s prophetic charisms. Where the RLDS were earlier permitted to read the Book of Mormon as nineteenth-century fiction, they are now encouraged by their leaders to do so, though they are still permitted to find in it, if they wish, some inspiring passages. These changes have been resisted by a conservative minority that has lost the battle for control of the Reorganization and now tends to worship outside RLDS congregations. …
Comments On The Book Of Mormon Witnesses: A Response To Jerald And Sandra Tanner, Matthew Roper
Comments On The Book Of Mormon Witnesses: A Response To Jerald And Sandra Tanner, Matthew Roper
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Critics of the Book of Mormon frequently claim that some of the Book of Mormon witnesses later doubted or denied their testimony of the Book of Mormon. They also claim that the activities of the Three Witnesses while out of the church cast doubt upon the reliability of their earlier written testimony. I review evidence for these claims and also discuss the issue of what may constitute a witness of the Book of Mormon and whether the witnesses ever doubted or denied their testimony of the Book of Mormon. Evidence for later disbelief in the Book of Mormon by the …

Squirrels As Predators, J. R. Callahan
Squirrels As Predators, J. R. Callahan
Great Basin Naturalist
A literature review and field observations indicate that most sciurids are facultative predators on small vertebrates. This behavior is documented for at least 30 sciurid species in 8 genera. The frequency of predation apparently is influenced by various factors including climate, season, gender, reproductive condition, and availability of plant sources for certain nutrients such as calcium and nitrogen. Although sciurids assimilate as much energy from animal foods as do obligate carnivores, behavior associated with predation appears to be less efficient in sciurids and may rely partly on prey habituation and other adaptive behaviors.

Autumn And Winter Foods Of The Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus Pallidicinctus) (Galliformes: Tetraonidae), Terry Z. Riley, Charles A. Davis, Randall A. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
Descriptions of Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) foods in New Mexico have not included comparison between autumn and winter seasons. We analyzed and compared prairie-chicken crop contents in autumn 1976 (n = 9) and 1977 (n = 17) and winter 1977 (n = 4) and 1978 (n = 2) in a shinnery oak (Quercus havardii) grassland in southeastern New Mexico. Autumn foods were a mixture of seeds (x̄ = 43%), vegetative material (x̄ = 39%), and insects (x̄ = 18%), especially shinnery oak acorns and insect galls (x̄ = …

This task force was formed in August 1992 to work for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Foreign acquisitions Project for Japanese materials. The charge of the task force is to write a report which assesses current strengths and weaknesses of the major United States and Canadian Japanese research collections, determines their needs and priorities, and offers concrete action/funding proposals to address the identified problems. Fortunately, a number of previous reports and studies on the issues are available, and we reviewed and studied them carefully, including the "Survey" (1980) by Naomi Fukuda, the Perushek Report (1990), and the reports of …
Archival And Library Resources Within The Mid-Atlantic States Region For Advancing Scholarship In East Asian Studies, Frank Joseph Shulman
Archival And Library Resources Within The Mid-Atlantic States Region For Advancing Scholarship In East Asian Studies, Frank Joseph Shulman
Journal of East Asian Libraries
The Mid-Atlantic States region is the home to a vast array of archival and library resources that have long-term research value for scholars and students interested in the history, politics, commerce and culture of the countries of East Asia and in American interaction with China, Japan and Korea. A series of fifteen panels between 1977 and 1991 presented a wide range of papers about some of these resources at the annual meetings of the Mid-Atlantic Region/Association for Asian Studies (MAR/AAS).
The Semantics Of Certainty In Quechua And Its Implications For A Cultural Epistemology, Janis B. Nuckolls
The Semantics Of Certainty In Quechua And Its Implications For A Cultural Epistemology, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
This article contributes to attempts on the part of Quechua scholars to understand the evidential system of this language family, and thereby paves the way for a more complex understanding of Quechua speakers' language and culture. The author opposes the position that the most general meaning of the -mi suffix is to indicate a direct or first-hand experience; and she holds that specific claims about Quechua speakers' epistemological orientations, based on such an analysis, cannot be supported. Evidence from speakers' use of -mi indicates that it encodes two paradigmatic contrasts: one is status-like or modal, the other evidential. The patterning …
