Sentencing Reform: Electronic Monitoring, Joseph Pia Jan 1994

Sentencing Reform: Electronic Monitoring, Joseph Pia

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The prison and jail populations of the United States are above capacity; new alternatives are needed now. Because of this priority demand, many states have adopted electronic monitoring of offenders as a solution. However, electronic monitoring may violate the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment - the ambiguity lying in the fact that there is not consistent legislation on electronic monitoring. The law seems to vary from state to state.

The Termination Of Parental Rights, D. Janell Pugh Jan 1994

The Termination Of Parental Rights, D. Janell Pugh

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This paper defines what the law requires as grounds for the termination of parental rights. The state may decide it is in the child's best interest to terminate the rights of a parent of parents. In cases where abuse or neglect occurs and the child is in immediate danger, the child is removed from the home and placed in foster care.

If and when home situation is safe, the child is reunited with the family. When this cycle occurs again and again, and the children are repeatedly removed and reunited with their families, or in extreme cases of abuse, neglect, …

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls Jan 1994

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls

Theses and Dissertations

This study measures risk-taking predisposition among a conservative religious population of women, in this instance Mormon women. Risk taking is defined as a recognition of some probability of negative consequences to an action, which can include the loss of a potential reward as well as a punishment. A risk-taking predisposition results when individuals are not risk aversive but, in fact, enjoy risk taking.

Survey research collected at two conferences in Utah reveal the likelihood of moderate levels of rebellious and adventurous risk-taking predisposition among the over 500 Mormon women respondents. It is suggested that religious affiliation or economic and educational …

Temples Of The Ancient World: Ritual And Symbolism, Donald W. Parry

Maxwell Institute Publications

Three essays by Hugh Nibley, plus papers presented at the 1993 FARMS symposium, other important papers on the temple, a keynote address by Elder Marion D. Hanks (former president of the Salt Lake Temple), striking illustrations by Michael Lyon (who illustrated Nibley’s Temple and Cosmos)—these features and more make Temples of the Ancient World: Ritual and Symbolism one of the most significant volumes ever published on the temple. Twenty-four essays in this 1994 publication focus on the temple in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near East, the New Testament, Jewish writings, and the Book of Mormon and ancient America.

Harry S. Truman As A Modern Cyrus, Michael T. Benson Jan 1994

Harry S. Truman As A Modern Cyrus, Michael T. Benson

BYU Studies

When US President Harry S Truman recognized the state of Israel in May 1948, he demonstrated his commitment to a homeland for the Jewish people. The US was the first country to recognize Israel, and in so acting Truman became a modern-day Cyrus, and in fact he compared himself to the biblical Cyrus, who made possible the return of the Jews to Jerusalem as recorded in Ezra 1. This article tells the background of Truman's decision, from his lifelong love for the Bible to the pressures he faced from opponents and his own advisors, who warned that political realities, especially …

Crime And Family Law

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

In the Prelaw Seminar (Student Development 11988) taught by the prelaw advisor at BYU, students have the opportunity to study a variety of specialties in law. This one-credit course is designed as a six-semester academic-vocational count that coven the Supreme Court and the legal issues of Constitutional, Environmental, International, Criminal, and Family Law. During the tint-block (8 week) course, speakers whose professional experiences correspond to the semester's topic present their insights before the class. This vocational insight is augmented by the use of a "Nutshell" ten which constitutes the academic portion of the count and is the only · part …

The Mormons In Wilhelmie Germany, 1870-1914: Making A Place For An Unwanted American Religion In A Changing German Society, Michael Mitchell Jan 1994

The Mormons In Wilhelmie Germany, 1870-1914: Making A Place For An Unwanted American Religion In A Changing German Society, Michael Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1853 and 1914 the kingdom of Prussia and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, disagreed over the issue of Mormon missionaries proselyting in Prussia. In 1853 royal magistrates banished all Mormon missionaries from the kingdom for advocating emigration. A new church policy of preaching without seeking for official permission, in addition to an improved relationship between the Mormons in Utah and the United States government after the Manifesto of 1890, led to an increase in missionaries sent to Germany, including Prussia. By 1900 mormon success alarmed the Prussian Protestant clergy and a few Prussian governors …

The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom Jan 1994

The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis outlines the international diffusion and growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church. A model of Mormon spatial diffusion in foreign countries is developed incorporating both a functional and spatial perspective. The functional perspective includes supply and demand variables which influence the rate of growth of the Mormon Church in a country. The functional perspective is not fully explored in the thesis. The spatial perspective which the study concentrates on seeks to show a general spatial pattern related to the spread of the Church within countries.

The original diffusion of the Church to …

Lds, Catholic And Secular Perspectives On Development In The Dominican Republic, Gregory L. Adams Jan 1994

Lds, Catholic And Secular Perspectives On Development In The Dominican Republic, Gregory L. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses six world views concerning development in the Dominican Republic. Catholic and LDS traditions assert that full development is life with God and life with God as a god, respectively. The LDS church has experienced rapid growth in the Dominican Republic, but must deal with less active and illiterate members. The catholic tradition permeates Dominican culture but must deal both with a scarcity of priests and a schism among the clergy.

The secular chapter combines many secular views into four, based on lan Mitroff's and Ralph Kilmann's extension of C.G. Jung psychological types. Analytic Scientists have historically dominated …

Active Latter-Day Saint Working Mothers: Their Effect On Their Daughters' Future Plans, Nissa C. Bengtson Allred Jan 1994

Active Latter-Day Saint Working Mothers: Their Effect On Their Daughters' Future Plans, Nissa C. Bengtson Allred

Theses and Dissertations

This research looks at the effect employed active LDS mothers have on their daughters' future plans for education, career, marriage, and children. Mothers' educational level, type of employment, and daughters' attachment to the LDS church were taken into consideration. It was found that a majority of daughters are definite in their plans for education, career, marriage, and children regardless of the employment status of their mother. Daughters of employed LDS mothers are more definite in their plans for a career than daughters of unemployed LDS mothers. No effect was found for mothers' employment on daughters' future plans for college, marriage, …

Pornography And Premarital Sexual Activity Among Lds Teenagers, Mark A. Harris Jan 1994

Pornography And Premarital Sexual Activity Among Lds Teenagers, Mark A. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship between several independent measures and premarital sexual activity among 1,393 LDS teenagers living along the east coast. Results indicate that among these LDS teens, exposure to pornography is strongly and significantly related to the probability of having engaged in premarital sex. This holds true even when controlling for peer influence, family structure, religiosity, gender, and age. Teens who were exposed to pornography (1 to 24 exposures) are 2.6 times more likely to have engaged in sex as compared to those who report no exposure to pornography. Furthermore, those teens exposed to a higher amount of …

The Functions Of The Executive And The Republic: Exploring The Platonic Roots Of Chester Barnard, Paul C. Godfrey Jan 1994

The Functions Of The Executive And The Republic: Exploring The Platonic Roots Of Chester Barnard, Paul C. Godfrey

Faculty Publications

This essay examines the similarities between Plato's Republic and Barnard's Functions of the Executive. The essay argues that comparisons between Barnard and Plato are not overstated in form or substance. Three major areas of each work are compared: the ethical foundations, the political foundations, and the role of education in achieving those political means. Implications arising from the comparison are discussed and the essay concludes by linking the Barnard- Plato dialogue with current issues in management theory and practice.

Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein Jan 1994

Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

This study treats the necessity to de-emphasize the focus on grammar teaching alone in L2, and to introduce methods which are not teacher-centered, so as to enable students to interact more among each other.

By using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives – but in reality using a sequence of teaching techniques that could be applied to other grammatical situations – this article presents the use of sea shells as a visual and tactile aid which allows students to shift their L2 efforts from an abstract notion to a concrete usage.

This study offers a tool to attempt a balance …

The Effect Of Health Insurance On Retirement, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1994

The Effect Of Health Insurance On Retirement, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

FOR DECADES health insurance in the United States has been provided to most nonelderly Americans through their own or a family member's employment. This system of employment-based health insurance has evolved largely because of the substantial cost advantages that employers enjoy in supplying health insurance. By pooling large numbers of individuals, employers face significantly lower administrative expenses than do individuals. In addition, employer expenditures on health insurance are tax deductible, but individual expenditures are generally not.1

Despite these cost advantages, there is widespread dissatisfaction with this system of employment-based health insurance. Many people are excluded because not all employers …

A Reasoned Interlingua For Knowledge-Based Machine Translation, Deryle W. Lonsdale, John R. R. Leavitt, Alexander M. Franz Jan 1994

A Reasoned Interlingua For Knowledge-Based Machine Translation, Deryle W. Lonsdale, John R. R. Leavitt, Alexander M. Franz

Faculty Publications

Research in machine translation (MT) has resulted in a number of Machine Translation systems that are based on the interlingua approach. This paper reports the results of designing an interlingua for a large-scale, practical MT system designed to translate technical information from English into a number of target languages. After an analysis of the main features of the translation problem faced by this system we describe the principles underlying our design decisions. We address issues such as the design and development methodology, the grain size of the representation, and our efforts to endow the interlingua representation with the ability to …

Sentenced To Be Hanged: The Tragic Story Of A Danish Immigrant, Peter D. Thomsen Jan 1994

Sentenced To Be Hanged: The Tragic Story Of A Danish Immigrant, Peter D. Thomsen

The Bridge

Several years ago, Thorvald Hansen who was then in

charge of the Danish Immigrant Archives at Grand View

College, Des Moines, Iowa, asked if I would be interested in

writing the Peter Mathiasen story. I had previously told him

that in my childhood home I had heard bits and pieces of this

tale and that what I remembered most was how intensely it

was discussed by some of the immigrant people with whom

my parents associated. Little did I realize they were talking

about something that happened fifteen years before my

birth.

Large-Scale Machine Translation: An Interlingua Approach, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Alexander M. Franz, John R. R. Leavitt Jan 1994

Large-Scale Machine Translation: An Interlingua Approach, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Alexander M. Franz, John R. R. Leavitt

Faculty Publications

In this paper we discuss the design and development of an interlingua for a large-scale MT project. We also discuss how the resulting KANT interlingua constrains complexity, supports staged development, evolves in a balanced fashion, and seeks maximal coverage. We address issues such as granularity of the data representation, its specification, the types of information it encodes, and how it supports a modular system architecture. Our experience shows that through a careful, reasoned design and implementation effort, it is possible to achieve multilingual target-language generation for extensive technical domains.

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Small Mammal Density And Species Composition On A Radioactive Waste Disposal Area: The Role Of Edge Habitat, John D. Boone, Barry L. Keller Dec 1993

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Small Mammal Density And Species Composition On A Radioactive Waste Disposal Area: The Role Of Edge Habitat, John D. Boone, Barry L. Keller

Great Basin Naturalist

Small mammal populations inhabiting radioactive waste disposal areas could be important vectors of contaminant redistribution, given sufficiently high numbers. Earlier studies conducted at the Subsurface Disposal Area (SDA) in southeastern Idaho found small mammal densities equaling or exceeding densities in native habitat. Our live-trapping study was conducted in 1988 and 1989 to assess the role of edge habitat (where SDA crested wheatgrass [Agropyron cristatum] plantings and native sagebrush habitat are separated by an earthen dike) in facilitating use of this highly modified site by small mammals. Small mammals had a significantly greater density in SDA edge habitat than …

Association Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With Cattle Point Attractants In The Northern Great Plains, Daniel S. Licht, Kenneth D. Sanchez Dec 1993

Association Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With Cattle Point Attractants In The Northern Great Plains, Daniel S. Licht, Kenneth D. Sanchez

Great Basin Naturalist

In October 1991 we recorded all black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies and cattle points in a 1248-km2 study area in southwest North Dakota and southeast Montana. Cattle point attractants were defined as fabricated water tanks and long-term supplemental feed sites. We found that a significant number of prairie dog colonies encompassed or adjoined cattle point attractants (p < .001). Prairie dog colonies associated with cattle point attractants were a mean distance of 1.0 km from the next nearest town. The existence of cattle point attractants may encourage prairie dog colonization. Conversely, refraining from using long-term cattle point attractants can discourage prairie dog colonization.

A Decade Of Rlin Cjk, Karen Smith-Yoshimura Dec 1993

A Decade Of Rlin Cjk, Karen Smith-Yoshimura

Journal of East Asian Libraries

September 12, 1993, marked a full decade of the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) Chinese-Japanese-Korean (CJK) enhancements. When the Research Libraries Group, Inc., (RLG) introduced the CJK enhancements to R U N ten years ago, catalogers of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language materials for the first time could create cataloging records with CJK scripts that could be copied by other libraries and viewed by researchers across the country. Since the Library of Congress (LC), Columbia, Princeton, and Stanford created those first CJK records, the number of CJK records in the RLIN database has grown to 1,201,421 (as of June 30, …

Late Bloom In The Desert: The East Asian Library Collection And Services At Arizona State University, Ai-Hwa Wu Dec 1993

Late Bloom In The Desert: The East Asian Library Collection And Services At Arizona State University, Ai-Hwa Wu

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Unlike the majority of East Asian library collections which were established with the full support and well thought-out plans from the library administration, the East Asian collection at ASU started in 1968 with a somewhat make-do arrangement. There was no librarian hired or designated to take charge of the basic library functions of East Asian language materials; the cataloging responsibility for these materials was added to the duties of a catalog librarian who happened to have a Chinese language background and was given an assistant who knew the Japanese and Korean languages.
