Rule Of Law In Legal And Economic Theory, Noel B. Reynolds
Rule Of Law In Legal And Economic Theory, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
Legal positivism, the leading version of legal theory, has shown that a concentration on the meanings and logical relations of legal concepts, however much supplemented by intuition, common sense and legal experience, is not adequate to make full sense out of the human experience of law, and the traditional understandings of legal obligation and rule of law in particular. However, modern economic science has advanced a radically individualistic theoretical approach which has propelled economics to the fore as the most successful of the social sciences. And its basic theoretical stance is proving both attractive and adaptable to all the other …

Cryptogams, Vascular Plants, And Soil Hydrological Relations: Some Preliminary Results From The Semiarid Woodlands Of Eastern Australia, D. J. Eldridge
Cryptogams, Vascular Plants, And Soil Hydrological Relations: Some Preliminary Results From The Semiarid Woodlands Of Eastern Australia, D. J. Eldridge
Great Basin Naturalist
Grazed and ungrazed sites were examined in a semiarid woodland in eastern Australia to determine relationships within various types of cryptogams, and the role of cryptogams in pasture dynamics, infiltration, and water erosion. Strong relationships were found between vascular plant cover and cover of cryptogams for nine rangeland sites over an 18-month period. In the absence of vascular plants, sites with low cover of cryptogams were dominated by algae. The presence of a cryptogamic crust had no significant effect on infiltration at ungrazed sites but significantly increased infiltration at some grazed sites. Splash erosion was very low on soils with …

Perception Of Leadership Style And Job Satisfaction, Carlos Holgado
Perception Of Leadership Style And Job Satisfaction, Carlos Holgado
Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between the perception of leadership behaviors, self-perception (managers and supervisors) vs. perception of others (staff members), and the level of job satisfaction of those staff members will be analyzed.
The main focus of the present study is to determine what the relationship is among the four basic leadership behaviors - Telling, Selling, Participating, and Delegating- based on the Situational Leadership theory (Hersey and Blanchard, 1974, 1982) perceived by staff members, and job satisfaction in terms of work, pay, opportunities for promotion, supervision style, relationship with coworkers-workers-workers-workers, and job in general according to the Job Satisfaction theory developed by …

Interview: The Biological Evidence For Homosexuality Reappraised, William Byne
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Because of recent media reports and public interest in the role of biological and genetic factors in the development of homosexuality, the editor decided some information regarding this topic might be useful for AMCAP members. Dr. William Byne has recently published several professional articles in which he has criticized the biological and genetic evidence relevant to the etiology of homosexuality. Dr. Byne graciously consented to be interviewed for the AMCAP Journal.

Analysis Of Weighted Fan-Out/Fan-In Volume Holographic Interconnections, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana, B. Keith Jenkins, A. R. Tanguay
Faculty Publications
The feasibility of employing volume holographic techniques for the implementation of highly multiplexed weighted fan-out/fan-in interconnections is analyzed on the basis of interconnection fidelity, optical throughput, and complexity of recording schedule or implementation hardware. These feasibility criteria were quantitatively evaluated using the optical beam propagation method to numerically simulate the diffraction characteristics of volume holographic interconnections recorded in a linear holographic material. We find that conventional interconnection architectures (that are based on a single coherent optical source) exhibit a direct trade-off between interconnection fidelity and optical throughput on the one hand, and recording schedule or hardware complexity on the other. …

Our American Cousins, Alexandre Carron, Christophe Carron
Our American Cousins, Alexandre Carron, Christophe Carron
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the article which follows, Alexandre and Christophe Carron, uncle and nephew, of Fully, Canton Valais, tell of their own adventure in discovering and writing about the Valaisans' immigration to North an~ South America. They have published two books, with a third under way, under the series title, Our American Cousins (Sierre, Switzerland: Edition Monographic).
Volume I (1986) presents the problem of the Valaisan emigration of the nineteenth century. It describes diverse expeditions to Algeria and Argentina, in addition to the founding and history of the V alaisan colony of San Jose in Argentina. Volume Il (1991) covers the colonization …

King On King Lear: Finding Virtue In Minute Particulars, A. Jane Birch

“The social sciences should not exist. And I'm grateful that there are people in the social sciences working to destroy them.” This statement might easily be dismissed as rash and unjustified were the author not a world-class scholar, the quality of whose life-long study serves as an invitation to consider his reasons for making such a declaration. If, in the end, we cannot concur with Dr. Arthur Henry King's verdict on the ultimate value of the social sciences, might not his analysis of its problems give us a new perspective from which we might reevaluate it? Perhaps there is something …

Profiles Of Immigration, Jane Adèle Chapman
Profiles Of Immigration, Jane Adèle Chapman
Swiss American Historical Society Review
There is a story to tell for every Valaisan immigrant of the 19th century, but only a few can be presented below. These profiles were written by Swiss Valaisans, by American immigrants, or their descendants. They vary greatly as to source and level of detail. But even the simplest account of the facts of departure and travel reveal the enormity of the steps these immigrants took and the effect it would have on them and the generations to come..
Nineteenth Century Swiss Valaisan Immigration To The United States, Jane Adèle Chapman
Nineteenth Century Swiss Valaisan Immigration To The United States, Jane Adèle Chapman
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In writing this paper I have had before me a mental picture of a young couple who left Martigny-Bourg in bas-Valais in the summer of 1854. They sailed from Le Havre with their small son on the new American ship Brother Jonathan to the Port of New York and continued overland to Wisconsin. The study of Valaisan emigration, of which this paper is a part, is my attempt to put this rather blurry mental picture in focus.
“Nigh Unto Death”: Nde Research And The Book Of Mormon, Kevin Christensen
“Nigh Unto Death”: Nde Research And The Book Of Mormon, Kevin Christensen
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
This article suggests that contemporary near-death research casts light on several episodes in the Book of Mormon. Alma’s conversion while “nigh unto death” fits a common pattern of experience. Modern researchers have noticed distinctive aftereffects among those who have experienced a near-death experience (NDE). In the Book of Mormon, both Alma and the resurrected Christ demonstrate these aftereffects. Lehi’s dream invites comparison with the otherworld journey literature of many nations. Nephi’s interpretation of Lehi’s dream casts light on the tension between the literal and the symbolic elements of visionary experience. Finally, just as accurate out-of-body observations made by NDErs argued …

Notes On Korihor And Language, Robert E. Clark

Korihor makes use of language to cast doubt in the minds of his listeners and to tear down the power of God. Language is used for both good and ill.
