Ultraconnected And Critical Graphs, Jason Nicholas Grout May 2004

Ultraconnected And Critical Graphs, Jason Nicholas Grout

Theses and Dissertations

We investigate the ultraconnectivity condition on graphs, and provide further connections between critical and ultraconnected graphs in the positive definite partial matrix completion problem. We completely characterize when the join of graphs is ultraconnected, and prove that ultraconnectivity is preserved by Cartesian products. We completely characterize when adding a vertex to an ultraconnected graph preserves ultraconnectivity. We also derive bounds on the number of vertices which guarantee ultraconnectivity of certain classes of regular graphs. We give results from our exhaustive enumeration of ultraconnected graphs up to 11 vertices. Using techniques involving the Lovász theta parameter for graphs, we prove certain …

Faculty Publications

Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are an important source of both T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 cytokines, through which they can exert beneficial, as well as deleterious, effects in a variety of inflammatory diseases. This functional heterogeneity raises the question of how far phenotypically distinct subpopulations are responsible for such contrasting activities. In this study, we identify a particular set of iNKT cells that lack the NK1.1 marker (NK1.1neg) and secrete high amounts of interleukin (IL)-17 and low levels of interferon (IFN)-{gamma} and IL-4. NK1.1neg iNKT cells produce IL-17 upon synthetic ({alpha}-galactosylceramide [{alpha}-GalCer] or PBS-57), as well …

Selection Of Ants By The American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus), Janene Auger, Gary L. Ogborn, Clyde L. Pritchett, Hal L. Black Apr 2004

Selection Of Ants By The American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus), Janene Auger, Gary L. Ogborn, Clyde L. Pritchett, Hal L. Black

Western North American Naturalist

We examined selection of ants as food by black bears (Ursus americanus) in Utah by comparing the genera of ants we sampled from study plots in 5 vegetation types with those found in bear scats. In the plots we found 641 ant colonies representing 18 genera. Five genera comprised 85% of all colonies sampled: Formica, Lasius, Camponotus, Tapinoma, and Myrmica. Thirteen genera were found in scats, but 99% were composed of the same 5 listed above. Limited utilization of some ant genera by black bears may reflect body size, colony size, nest type, and presence or absence …

Numerical Modeling Of Friction Stir Welding: A Comparison Of Alegra And Forge3, Alma H. Oliphant Apr 2004

Numerical Modeling Of Friction Stir Welding: A Comparison Of Alegra And Forge3, Alma H. Oliphant

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to evaluate the capabilities of ALEGRA, a Sandia National Labs hydrocode, and Forge3, a Transvalor S.A. product, to accurately model the Friction Stir Welding Process. ALEGRA and Forge3 are discussed in light of the inherent challenges of modeling Friction Stir Welding, and a rotational boundary condition is added to ALEGRA. Results are presented from Friction Stir Welding modeling outputs from both ALEGRA and Forge3. ALEGRA is shown to be incapable of modeling the Friction Stir Welding process, in large part due to its focus on shock propagation, which causes extremely small time steps. Forge3 …

Gradient-Based Non-Linear Microstructure Design, Brent L. Adams, M. Lyon Apr 2004

Gradient-Based Non-Linear Microstructure Design, Brent L. Adams, M. Lyon

Faculty Publications

The support of this research by the Army Research Office is gratefully acknowledged. M. Lyon is supported by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Fourier analysis is implemented on the orientation distribution of a polycrystalline microstructure. The linearity and convexity of the Fourier space, with respect to orientation, allows one to consider all possible distributions by considering all linear combinations of single-grain orientations. The limits of the Fourier space are therefore defined by the solutions to a set of linear programming problems. A unique approach to the linear programming, similar to the Krylov subspace methods for obtaining solutions to …

From Mission To Megacity: The Changing Concentration Of The Los Angeles City-System, Kerri L. Cosby Apr 2004

From Mission To Megacity: The Changing Concentration Of The Los Angeles City-System, Kerri L. Cosby

Theses and Dissertations

Having an understanding of when, where, and why people settle in an area is crucial in explaining the growth course of a city. However, this cannot be done by looking at a city in isolation. Its surrounding region has a tremendous impact on its development. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the growth of Los Angeles from a regional perspective, called the Los Angeles city-system, which consists of Los Angeles and its hinterland. Connections are made between the history and the geography of the Los Angeles city-system by examining the spatial distribution of population within the region between …

The Symbolic Universe Of Latter-Day Saints: Do We Believe The Wealthy Are More Righteous?, John M. Rector Apr 2004

The Symbolic Universe Of Latter-Day Saints: Do We Believe The Wealthy Are More Righteous?, John M. Rector

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This study was conducted in order to determine if members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) make attributions consistent with the idea that wealth and righteousness are related. Results indicated that Church members are more likely to attribute righteousness to a wealthy church member than a poor one. Potential reasons for these findings are explored, along with the ramifications such beliefs might have for members of the LDS Church.
Portions of this study were presented to the AMCAP Convention, April 1, 2004.

Religiosity And Life Satisfaction Among Lds Women, Sherrie Mills Johnson Apr 2004

Religiosity And Life Satisfaction Among Lds Women, Sherrie Mills Johnson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Because of their high religiosity, LDS women are an excellent population group to study the effects of religiosity. Very little published research regarding this segment of the general population exists. This study examines the religiosity of LDS women by comparing two national samples of LDS women to a sample of non-LDS women taken from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), in order to determine differences in their life satisfaction and mental well-being. This study also compares two subgroups of LDS women, measuring if increased levels of adherence to the same religious beliefs has an effect on satisfaction and …

Does Chiasmus Appear In The Book Of Mormon By Chance?, Boyd F. Edwards, W. Farrell Edwards

BYU Studies

Chiasmus in an inverted-parallel literary form that was employed by ancient Hebrew biblical writers, among others. An instance of this form, called a "chiasm," presents two or more literary elements, and then restates them in reverse order. For example, Matthew 10:39 is a two-element chiasm:

EXAMPLE 1

He that (a) findeth his life shall (b) lose it:

And he that (b) loseth his life for my sake shall (a) find it.

The Rhetoric Of The Frontier And The Frontier Of Rhetoric, Carly Kay Paul Apr 2004

The Rhetoric Of The Frontier And The Frontier Of Rhetoric, Carly Kay Paul

Theses and Dissertations

The definition of rhetoric has recently been expanded to include elements of experience, particularly the experiences that landscape provides. One landscape that has rhetorical significance is the American frontier, both in Colonial times and in the nineteenth century. The frontier had a rhetorical impact on women, in particular, giving them freedom to change their roles and achieve economic, political, and social success. Because of the tremendous significance of the frontier in women's lives, a new definition of frontiers emphasizes conditions such as opportunity for change, a dangerous and uncertain atmosphere, a freedom of thought and action, and an ability to …

Raymore's hierarchical leisure constraints scale was used to measure levels of leisure constraints. The sample was taken from female students at a private western American university and consisted …

Ironic Multiplicity: Fernando's "Pessoas" Suspended In Kierkegaardian Irony, Michelle Pulsipher Hale Mar 2004

Ironic Multiplicity: Fernando's "Pessoas" Suspended In Kierkegaardian Irony, Michelle Pulsipher Hale

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies Søren Kierkegaard's understanding of irony as outlined in his master's thesis, The Concept of Irony, to the literary works of Fernando Pessoa. Recently Kierkegaardian scholarship has opened possibilities for non-traditional interpretation of Kierkegaard's dissertation and pseudonymous "aesthetic" texts by reading them in the ironic tone in which they were written. This paper offers a similar re-reading of the poetic and prose works Pessoa attributes to his heteronyms.

Kierkegaard's presentation of Socrates as irony serves as a model for how Pessoa sustains the heteronymic project by balancing the use of rhetorical irony within the works of the heteronyms …

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density In A Mock Tractor Cab, Benjamin Mahonri Faber Mar 2004

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density In A Mock Tractor Cab, Benjamin Mahonri Faber

Theses and Dissertations

An active noise control (ANC) system has been applied to the problem of attenuating low-frequency tonal noise inside small enclosures. The intended target application of the system was the reduction of the engine firing frequency inside heavy equipment cabins. The ANC system was based on a version of the filtered-x LMS adaptive algorithm, modified for the minimization of acoustic energy density (ED), rather than the more traditional minimization of squared acoustic pressure (SP). Three loudspeakers produced control signals within a mock cabin composed of a steel frame with plywood sides and a Plexiglas® front. An energy density sensor, capable of …

An Exploratory Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Cpj In Defending Journalists And Press Freedom Ideals In Latin America: Transnational Advocacy In The International Sphere, Leticia A. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is one of many nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations that work to defend press freedom and the safety of journalists in Latin America. Based on qualitative interviews with employees at the CPJ, open surveys with journalists who have been helped by the CPJ, historical archive research, and informal participant observation, this study shows that organized domestic and international nongovernmental groups can and do make improvements on behalf of journalists and press freedom in Latin America. The CPJ's activities raise issues and place them on the agenda, and they influence discourse, policy, institutional procedures, and state behavior. …

Phylogenetic Systematics And Evolution Within The Family Scincidae, Alison Swindle Whiting Mar 2004

Phylogenetic Systematics And Evolution Within The Family Scincidae, Alison Swindle Whiting

Theses and Dissertations

Scincidae (skinks) comprise one of the largest families of lizards, and the more than 1300 species show great variation in body size and form, and are found worldwide in a diversity of habitats. The group presents many interesting questions ranging from the colonization of oceanic islands, to the evolution of limb loss, yet most of these and other questions remain understudied. The purpose of this dissertation is to use multiple mitochonidrial and nuclear DNA markers in connection with current cladistic methods to address evolutionary questions at many levels within Scincidae. In chapter one, a molecular phylogenetic study, based on six …

Habitat Of Three Rare Species Of Small Mammals In Juniper Woodlands Of Southwestern Wyoming, Kevin M. Rompola, Stanley H. Anderson Feb 2004

Habitat Of Three Rare Species Of Small Mammals In Juniper Woodlands Of Southwestern Wyoming, Kevin M. Rompola, Stanley H. Anderson

Western North American Naturalist

Southwestern Wyoming constitutes the northern limit of the ranges of the cliff chipmunk (Tamias dorsalis), pinyon mouse (Peromyscus truei), and canyon mouse (P. crinitus). In addition to trying to determine their presence in the region, we wanted to identify habitat characteristics commonly used by each of these species. We used Sherman live-traps to sample 14 sites representing 2 distinct habitat types in 1998 and 1999: juniper-rocky slopes and juniper cliffs. Seventeen habitat characteristics were measured at capture locations for each species and compared with randomly located points. Best subsets multiple logistic regression was used …

A Putative Hybrid Swarm Within Oönopsis Foliosa (Asteraceae: Astereae), Jonathan F. Hughes, Gregory K. Brown Feb 2004

A Putative Hybrid Swarm Within Oönopsis Foliosa (Asteraceae: Astereae), Jonathan F. Hughes, Gregory K. Brown

Western North American Naturalist

Oönopsis foliosa var. foliosa and var. monocephala are endemic to short-grass steppe of southeastern Colorado and until recently were considered geographically disjunct. The only known qualitative feature separating these 2 varieties is floral head type; var. foliosa has radiate heads, whereas var. monocephala heads are discoid. Sympatry between these varieties is restricted to a small area in which a range of parental types and intermediate head morphologies is observed. We used distribution mapping, morphometric analyses, chromosome cytology, and pollen stainability to characterize the sympatric zone. Morphometrics confirms that the only discrete difference between var. foliosa and var. monocephala is radiate …
