Experience And Enlightenment: Character Portrait In Letters Of Johann Caspar Lohbauer, Elizabeth M. Siber
Swiss American Historical Society Review
These letters of a great-great uncle of mine titled, Experience and Enlightenment: Character Portrait in Letters of Johann Caspar Lohbauer, killed in the US Civil War 1863, Published Zurich 1864, were published in book format by his family in Switzerland and were introduced with the following words:
"If we print these letters, at first to a restricted public, it is because of the distinct wish of many dear friends who had seen part of these letters, or had heard of its contents, and who by their knowledge were affected and dearly wished to know it all- a wish, which with …

Apostles And Bishops In Early Christianity, Hugh Nibley
Apostles And Bishops In Early Christianity, Hugh Nibley
Maxwell Institute Publications
Editors’ Preface
In 1954 Professor Hugh W. Nibley taught a class at Brigham Young University about the office of bishop in early Christianity. It is hard to imagine anyone better than Hugh Nibley to shed light on this challenging and intriguing topic. Fortunately, as he prepared for class he typed his lectures virtually word-for-word on his manual typewriter and then read them out loud to his students in the old-school tradition of truly delivering a “lecture” (in Latin, lectura means “words about to be read”). After these lectures were delivered, Nibley set these “notes” aside and went on to address …
Teachings Of The Book Of Mormon, Semester 2: Transcripts Of Lectures Presented To An Honors Book Of Mormon Class At Brigham Young University, 1988-1990, Hugh Nibley
Maxwell Institute Publications
Hugh Nibley is one of the best-known and most highly revered of Latter-day Saint scholars. For over forty years this near-legendary teacher has enthralled his readers and listeners with his encyclopedic knowledge, his wit, and his untiring research in defense of Latter-day Saint beliefs.
Now you can join Dr. Nibley in the first of four Honors Book of Mormon classes that he taught at BYU during 1988-90. Part two contains twenty-seven lectures focusing on Mosiah 6 through Alma 41. It is vintage Nibley, with his insights, humor, and passionate convictions, discussing a book that he loves and knows so well.
Growing Up In Early Utah: The Wasatch Literary Association 1874-1878, Ronald W. Walker
Growing Up In Early Utah: The Wasatch Literary Association 1874-1878, Ronald W. Walker
BYU Studies
One day in early February 1874, Jim Ferguson, sensing the forlorn hope of advancing his courtship with Minnie Horne, suggested to Ort (Orson F.) Whitney and another of the boys that they organize a reading society. Ferguson "had heard, no doubt, of fond couples 'reading life's meaning in each others eyes,'" Whitney later mused, "and that was the kind of reading that most interested him." Since the seventeen-year-old Whitney found himself "in the same box with Ferguson on the girl question," the suggestion found a ready response. Whitney immediately invited those who "would make desirable members" to meet at the …
The Morality Of Misogny: The Case Of Rustico Filippi, Vituperatore Of Women, Fabian Alfie
The Morality Of Misogny: The Case Of Rustico Filippi, Vituperatore Of Women, Fabian Alfie
Quidditas
At the outset of his influential study on Rabelais, Mikhail Bakhtin makes an interesting observation. The scholar dedicates several pages to detail how the French author’s critical reception changed over time. Bakhtin illustrates how the attempt to comprehend an author can frequently be stymied by the cultural changes that occur across the centuries. As scholars analyze writers of earlier periods, the investigation of the cultural and textual background can become increasingly difficult.

Wedding Vows And Coffins: Canticles' Rhetoric, The Liturgical Form Of Matrimony And Middleton's A Chaste Maid In Cheapside (1613), Lisa Beauchamp
Quidditas
The concluding scene of Thomas Middleton’s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside begins as a double funeral procession and turns into a wedding as the lovers rise from their coffins to be married; but what are coffins doing in a wedding scene? The coffins, as an onstage sign of the metamorphosis of funeral into wedding, are the emblematic focus for this paper. This investigation exposes the resonances of Canticles’ erotic betrothal and Revelation’s matrimonial fulfilment as a rhetoric common to both theatrical rituals and to ecclesiastical scriptures. After briefly introducing what I call Canticles’ rhetoric – Canticles itself, its exegesis, and …
Utah's Plight: A Passage Through The Great Depression, Joseph F. Darowski
Utah's Plight: A Passage Through The Great Depression, Joseph F. Darowski
Theses and Dissertations
The Great Depression marked a fateful passage in the annals of the American people. President Roosevelt's New Deal, the nation's signature response, proved to be a determined but erratic reaction. Against the backdrop of a nation deeply mired in an unrelenting international depression, dramatic events played themselves out in the lives of the men and women of Utah. Throughout, fidelity to principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency were sorely challenged.
The people of Utah found succor in two almost diametrically opposed responses. The New Deal offered an amalgam of programs and panaceas through which the federal government attempted to deliver …
Strangers In A Strange Land: Heber J. Grant And The Opening Of The Japan Mission, Ronald W. Walker
Strangers In A Strange Land: Heber J. Grant And The Opening Of The Japan Mission, Ronald W. Walker
BYU Studies
When Heber J. Grant returned from a two-week vacation in Pacific Grove, California, in February 1901, the news he heard at first seemed favorable. One of his associates in the Quorum of the Twelve, Francis M. Lyman, had been asked to preside over the Church's European Mission. Elder Grant congratulated himself that "missionary lightning had once more escaped me," "heaved a sigh of relief," and embraced Lyman in mock celebration.
Land Use/Land Cover Changes And Groundwater Potential Zoning In And Around Raniganj Coal Mining Area, Bardhaman District, West Bengal – A Gis And Remote Sensing Approach
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
The Raniganj area has a long history of coal mining starting from 1744. This has resulted in major change in land use pattern and high groundwater abstraction leading to drinking water crisis especially during the premonsoon period. In the present study, land use /land cover conversions in Raniganj area from 1972 to 1998 and groundwater potential zoning for future groundwater development has been delineated using the techniques of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS). The study indicates that land covered by vegetation and settlement has decreased at the expense of mining activity, which is reflected in the increase in …
Iconoclasm And Iconophilia In Othello, Catherine E. Winiarski
Iconoclasm And Iconophilia In Othello, Catherine E. Winiarski
Quidditas
In his book War Against the Idols, Carlos Eire argues that iconoclastic resistance to the Medieval Catholic Church began with the gentle scolding of Erasmus and ended as the "shibboleth" of radical Calvinism. The use of images in religious instruction and practice was one of the major points of dispute between Protestant reformers and Catholic counter-reformers. Iconoclasm was certainly not confined to radical Calvinism; Anglican reformers, especially those who had spent time in continental Europe as exiles (like John Jewel, Bishop of Salisbury), quickly raised the issue in their country, which had its own unique history of religious reform. …

Heber J. Grant And The Utah Loan And Trust Company, Ronald W. Walker
Heber J. Grant And The Utah Loan And Trust Company, Ronald W. Walker
BYU Studies
Before 6:00 A.M. on May 29, 1897, the portly and veteran Apostle Brigham Young Jr., himself ailing due to an attack of dropsy, called at the Heber J. Grant household to pray a blessing upon his associate. He found that "Bro Grant... had a poor night but he was going to the hospital with firm faith that all would be well." The day before, Grant awoke with sever lumbar and abdominal pain. The doctors diagnosed a ruptured appendix and advanced peritonitis and advised immediate surgery. As the hour-and-a-half operation progressed, the nine attending surgeons found "extraordinary suppuration and commenced mortification." …
A Mormon “Widow” In Colorado: The Exile Of Emily Wells Grant, Ronald W. Walker
A Mormon “Widow” In Colorado: The Exile Of Emily Wells Grant, Ronald W. Walker
BYU Studies
As the southbound Denver & Rio Grande train pulled out of the depot at Salt Lake City in November 1889, Emily Wells Grant breathed a sigh of relief, and relaxed. As a plural wife of Elder Heber J. Grant, she was used to dodging United States marshals. Her recent crisis, she admitted, was of her own making. Why had she insisted on attending her father's seventy-fifth birthday celebration in the Twelfth Ward after five years of secrecy? She had been spotted there, the grand jury had reopened her husband's cohabitation case, and she had been forced to flee again. The …
A Thermoviscoelastic Beam Model For Brakes, Kenneth Kuttler, J. Bajkowski, J. R. Fernandez, M. Shillor
A Thermoviscoelastic Beam Model For Brakes, Kenneth Kuttler, J. Bajkowski, J. R. Fernandez, M. Shillor
Faculty Publications
A model for the dynamic thermomechanical behavior of a viscoelastic beam which is in frictional contact with a rigid rotating wheel is presented. It describes a simple braking system in which the wheel comes to a stop as a result of the frictional traction generated by the beam. Friction is modelled with a temperature and slip rate dependent coefficient of friction. Frictional heat generation is taken into account as well as the wheel temperature evolution, and the wear of the beam's contacting end. The model is formulated as a variational inequality. A FEM numerical scheme for the model is described, …
An Examination Of The Mechanisms Of Action In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bulimia Nervosa, Scott A. Baldwin, Diane L. Spangler, W. Stewart Agras
An Examination Of The Mechanisms Of Action In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bulimia Nervosa, Scott A. Baldwin, Diane L. Spangler, W. Stewart Agras
Faculty Publications
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN) has received consid- erable empirical support for its efficacy. However, few investigators have examined the mechanisms proposed to account for the reduction of BN symptoms during CBT. The current study examined the associations between therapist interventions, client mechanisms, and symptoms during treatment in a sample of 56 clients under- going CBT for BN. Results suggested that behavioral interventions were most asso- ciated with symptom change during treatment whereas relational interventions were most associated with change in client mechanisms such as client engagement. Addi- tionally, some changes in BN symptoms were mediated by changes …
The Diaries Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski
The Diaries Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski
Theses and Dissertations
An edited transcription of the 1879 to 1887 diaries of Mary Lois Walker Morris (1835-1919). Mary Lois, a plural wife in 19th century Utah, went in and out of hiding between 1885 and 1887 to protect her husband Elias Morris from prosecution for illegal cohabitation. Her daily diaries culminate with the court trial of her husband for illegal cohabitation in September 1887. At the trial, she testified falsely, stating that she had been separated from her husband since the beginning of 1883, when in fact the couple did not separate until May of 1885. As a result, her husband was …
Multiple Domains Of The Co-Chaperone Hop Are Important For Hsp70 Binding, Gregory M. Nelson, Patricia E. Carrigan, Patricia J. Roberts, Jha'nae Stoffer, Daniel L. Riggs, David F. Smith
Multiple Domains Of The Co-Chaperone Hop Are Important For Hsp70 Binding, Gregory M. Nelson, Patricia E. Carrigan, Patricia J. Roberts, Jha'nae Stoffer, Daniel L. Riggs, David F. Smith
Faculty Publications
The Hop/Sti1 co-chaperone binds to both Hsp70 and Hsp90. Biochemical and co-crystallographic studies have suggested that the EEVD-containing C terminus of Hsp70 or Hsp90 binds specifically to one of the Hop tetratricopeptide repeat domains, TPR1 or TPR2a, respectively. Mutational analyses of Hsp70 and Hop were undertaken to better characterize interactions between the C terminus of Hsp70 and Hop domains. Surprisingly, truncation of EEVD plus as many as 34 additional amino acids from the Hsp70 C terminus did not reduce the ability of Hsp70 mutants to co-immunoprecipitate with Hop, although further truncation eliminated Hop binding. Hop point mutations targeting a carboxylate …

Although the word finance is in the term microfinance, and the core elements of microfinance are those of the finance discipline, microfinance has yet to break into the mainstream or entrepreneurial finance literature. The purpose of this article is to introduce the finance academic community to the discipline of microfinance and microfinance institutions (MFIs). We provide a comprehensive review of over 350 articles and address the issues of MFI sustainability, products and services, management practices, clientele targeting, regulation and policy, and impact assessment.
Plan Design And 401(K) Savings Outcomes, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian
Plan Design And 401(K) Savings Outcomes, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian
Faculty Publications
We assess the impact of 401(k) plan design on four different 401(k) savings outcomes: participation in the 401(k) plan, the distribution of employee contribution rates, asset allocation, and cash distributions. We show that plan design can have an important effect on all of these savings outcomes. This suggests an important role for both employers in determining how to structure their 401(k) plans and government regulators in creating institutions that encourage or discourage particular aspects of 401(k) plan design.
Diffused Interface Model To Prevent Ingress Of Sea Water In Multi-Layer Coastal Aquifers
Diffused Interface Model To Prevent Ingress Of Sea Water In Multi-Layer Coastal Aquifers
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
In many regions coastal aquifers are major source of supply of water to various sectors. However indiscriminate pumping from these aquifers leads to seawater intrusion which is difficult to contain. A numerical model is developed to study two-dimensional steady state seawater intrusion problem involving hydrodynamic dispersion in a synthetic multi-layered confined coastal aquifer. The intrusion model is used to investigate efficacy of seawater control measures involving freshwater recharge wells and combined system of freshwater recharge and saltwater discharge wells. The study found that depth of recharge well, its location from the seashore and well head are important parameters that can …

Rachel R. Grant: The Continuing Legacy Of The Feminine Ideal, Ronald W. Walker
BYU Studies
We can imagine ourselves visiting Aunt Rachel Grant, longtime president of the Thirteenth Ward Relief Society and one of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's "leading ladies," at her home on Salt Lake City's Second East Street. In the year of our visit, 1890, her two-story, plastered adobe home partakes of the prevailing feminine ideal that stresses homemaking and handicraft. The stove is highly burnished, while the arms of each chair are covered with homemade lace crocheting. A corner "whatnot" meticulously displays pictures, small framed mottoes, wax and hair flowers, and other curios. Rachel's person also reflects her …
Do Out-Of-State Buyers Pay More For Real Estate? An Examination Of Anchoring-Induced Bias And Search Costs, Val E. Lambson, Grant R. Mcqueen, Barrett A. Slade
Do Out-Of-State Buyers Pay More For Real Estate? An Examination Of Anchoring-Induced Bias And Search Costs, Val E. Lambson, Grant R. Mcqueen, Barrett A. Slade
Faculty Publications
We explore the questions of whether and why out-of-state buyers pay more for real estate than their in-state counterparts. Theoretically, we develop a model capable of explaining a premium if out-of-state buyers have high search costs, upwardly biased beliefs about prices or an unusually short time horizon to purchase. Empirically, we find that out-of-state buyers pay a statistically significant and economically meaningful premium for apartment complexes in the Phoenix area. We also find some evidence consistent with the premium being driven by high search costs, biased beliefs (anchoring) and haste associated with out-of-state buyers.
Combining Learning Approaches For Incremental On-Line Parsing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael B. Manookin
Combining Learning Approaches For Incremental On-Line Parsing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael B. Manookin

This paper discusses the integration of two different machine learning approaches to modeling language, NL-Soar and analogical modeling (AM). The resulting hybrid system is capable of functionality that is not possible when using only one of the systems in isolation. After a brief introduction of each system, an explanation is given of how AM is used to provide information useful to NL-Soar for two tasks. Examples are given, and related issues are outlined.

The Effect Of Transaction Size On Off-The-Run Treasury Prices, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill, Mark F. Meyer, Meiring De Villiers

A price pressure effect is implied by segmentation in the market for a security. An empirical property of a segmented market is that the price of the security is sensitive to supply and demand conditions for that specific security, absent changes in risk and absent any new information. This paper examines intra-day trading data from the inter-dealer broker market for U.S. Treasury securities and finds that there is a price pressure effect in the off-the-run Treasury market. Thus, securities that would appear to be very close substitutes, i.e., on-the-run and off-the-run Treasury bonds, behave as if there is some degree …
