Ecotourism In The Amazon, Beatriz Garcia, José G. Gasques, Eliana T. Bastos Jul 2004

Ecotourism In The Amazon, Beatriz Garcia, José G. Gasques, Eliana T. Bastos

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents the development of ecotourism in the Brazilian Amazon from a legalperspective. Firstly, it provides an overview of the Brazilian Amazon and highlights the growing importanceof ecotourism in that region. Secondly, it examines the legal principles and rules on ecotourism at theinternational, regional and national levels. The regulation of ecotourism is crucial. Unregulated ecotourism islikely to cause environmental and social harm, particularly to local and indigenous communities. The legalframework regulating ecotourism activities is still incipient. This activity is generally regulated in an indirectmanner, but it is in any case subject to the general environmental law rules and principles. …

Tools To Think With? Towards Understanding The Use And Impact Of Model-Based Support Tools, Brian Mcintosh, R. A. F. Seaton, P. Jeffrey

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Formal models are an established technology for research in the environmental sciences. For several years now there has been an effort to enhance the re-usability of computer models for research purposes and to transfer the perceived benefits of formal modelling to environmental planning and policymaking. These efforts have resulted in the creation of a variety of support tools including DSS and modelling frameworks. However, there are a number of issues which may pose barriers to the uptake and use of such tools. We contend that new technologies and new techniques for exploring and manipulating them have to be translated into …

Participatory Multi-Agent Systems Modeling For Collective Watershed Management: The Use Of Role Playing Game., P. Promburom Jul 2004

Participatory Multi-Agent Systems Modeling For Collective Watershed Management: The Use Of Role Playing Game., P. Promburom

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Scarce farm land and water resources in the highland watersheds of northern Thailand coupled with multiple users have led to conflicts among stakeholders who play important roles in the system dynamics. Integrating companion modeling and multi-agent systems (MAS) can facilitate adaptive learning processes to result in a decentralized collective management strategy that meets the balanced needs of all parties. However, this requires innovative methods and tools, and coordination from all stakeholders involved in the process. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study on conducting role-playing games (RPG) in order to verify the researcher’s perceptions of an interested highland …

Pub And Data-Based Mechanistic Modelling: The Importance Of Parsimonious Continuous-Time Models, Peter C. Young, Renata J. Romanowicz Jul 2004

Pub And Data-Based Mechanistic Modelling: The Importance Of Parsimonious Continuous-Time Models, Peter C. Young, Renata J. Romanowicz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The problem of Prediction in Ungauged Basins (PUB) is intimately linked with the concept of regionalisation; namely the transfer of information from one catchment that is gauged to another that is not. But such regionalisation exercises can be dangerous and should be attempted only with great care. The present paper addresses what the authors believe to be one essential aspect of regionalisation: namely, the importance of considering only ‘top-down’ models that are parametrically efficient (parsimonious) and fully ‘identifiable’ from the available catchment data. We argue further that many mechanistic model parameters are more naturally defined in the context of continuous-time, …

From Arcadia To Elysium In The Magic Flute And Weimar Classicism: The Plan Of Salvation And Eighteenth-Century Views Of Moral Progression, John B. Fowles

BYU Studies

The painful sighs are now past.

Elysium's joyful banquets

Drown the slightest moan—

Elysium's life is

Eternal rapture, eternal flight;

Through laughing meadows a brook pipes its tune.

..........

Here faithful couples embrace each other,

Kiss on the velvet green sward

As the soothing west wind caresses them;

Here love is crowned,

Safe from death's merciless blow

It celebrates an eternal wedding feast.

Monostatos, The Moor, David P. Crandall Jul 2004

Monostatos, The Moor, David P. Crandall

BYU Studies

Monostatos, captain of Sarastro's guard and clandestine admirer of Pamina, is a character of frustrated villainy. Duplicitous, cowardly, and often dull-witted, he is bound to a menial social position and blinded, by a self-imposed ignorance that prevents him from realizing his ambitions. As an opportunist, Monostatos is entirely unsuccessful—his schemes and machinations never quite pan out. Yet of all the nationalities and peoples he could represent, why is Monostatos cast as a Moor? Why not a Greek or a Jew or a Dane? Is it simply his Moorish background that makes of him a rather odious and pathetic creature, or …

Combining Learning Approaches For Incremental On-Line Parsing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael B. Manookin

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the integration of two different machine learning approaches to modeling language, NL-Soar and analogical modeling (AM). The resulting hybrid system is capable of functionality that is not possible when using only one of the systems in isolation. After a brief introduction of each system, an explanation is given of how AM is used to provide information useful to NL-Soar for two tasks. Examples are given, and related issues are outlined.

The Effects Of Premarital Sexual Promiscuity On Subsequent Marital Sexual Satisfaction, Sherie Christensen Jun 2004

The Effects Of Premarital Sexual Promiscuity On Subsequent Marital Sexual Satisfaction, Sherie Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

A satisfying sexual relationship is an important aspect of general marital satisfaction. Considering that most people will marry, understanding the factors influencing marital sexual satisfaction becomes important in understanding what makes happy, satisfied relationships and individuals in our society. This study builds on previous research, which has indicated that there are a number of "risky factors" associated with having numerous premarital sexual partners, by demonstrating that there are risks associated with the future marital relationship. Using exchange theory concepts, this study empirically examines the relationship between premarital sexual promiscuity and marital sexual satisfaction. The sample included 313 married males and …

Mechanism Governing The Cellular Susceptibility To Secretory Phospholipase A2, Lauren Blackburn Jensen Jun 2004

Mechanism Governing The Cellular Susceptibility To Secretory Phospholipase A2, Lauren Blackburn Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) is an important part of apoptosis and disposal of damaged and dying cells. However, healthy cells are not susceptible to attack by sPLA2. Recent studies have focused on membrane properties necessary to induce susceptibility in both artificial and biological membranes. Hydrolysis of phospholipids by sPLA2 requires at least two preliminary steps: first, adsorption of the enzyme to the cellular membrane, and second, movement of a phospholipid into the active site of the enzyme. We determined the effects of susceptibility on each of the two steps and determined the contributions changing the equilibrium constants have on susceptibility. …

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal Jun 2004

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Microenterprises constitute the vast majority of business firms in low- and middle-income developing countries. In Latin America, the sector contributes significantly to employment and gross domestic product. Recently, the expansion of microlending programs has been viewed as an effective means of developing the microenterprise sector and alleviating poverty. However, the nexus between microenterprise development and environmental degradation has remained largely unexplored. It is suspected that the pervasive informality of the microenterprise sector, its sheer size, and the high incidence of poverty in the sector contribute to cumulative environmental degradation and low standards of occupational safety. This paper highlights commonly observed …

Correlation And Covariance Of Satellite Scatterometer Measurements, David G. Long, Peter K. Yoho Jun 2004

Correlation And Covariance Of Satellite Scatterometer Measurements, David G. Long, Peter K. Yoho

Faculty Publications

Capable scatterometer designs have been developed that seek improved resolution through the use of higher pulse sampling rates. The high sampling rates bring the traditional scatterometry assumption of measurement independence into question. This paper uses fundamental scattering theory to derive general expressions for correlation and covariance between scatterometer measurements and provides practical analysis using current and future instruments as examples. The paper derives expressions for the measurement variance parameter Kp when measurement correlation due to Rayleigh fading effects is present and relates Kp to the statistics of multiple pulse measurements. A function of the transmit signal modulation and receive processing, …

The Impact Of Species Concept On Biodiversity Studies, Keith A. Crandall, Paul-Michael Agapow, Olaf R. P. Bininda-Emonds, John L. Gittleman, Georgina M. Mace, Jonathon C. Marshall, Andy Purvis

Faculty Publications

Species are defined using a variety of different operational techniques. While discussion of the various methodologies has previously been restricted mostly to taxonomists, the demarcation of species is also crucial for conservation biology. Unfortunately, different methods of diagnosing species can arrive at different entities. Most prominently, it is widely thought that use of a phylogenetic species concept may lead to recognition of a far greater number of much less inclusive units. As a result, studies of the same group of organisms can produce not only different species identities but also different species range and number of individuals. To assess the …

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to further the development of an instrument for use in investigating the ideas or beliefs that Spanish language teachers possess about the teaching of a foreign language. It was also the intent of the study to survey Spanish language teachers and use their responses as an aid in the development of the instrument. A questionnaire detailing possible teacher behaviors was sent out to 220 Spanish language secondary school teachers in the state of Utah. Three teacher orientations emerged and were significantly related to gender and years of teaching experience. Seven questions from the questionnaire emerged as …

Validation Of Criteria Used To Predict Warfarin Dosing Decisions, Nicole Thomas May 2004

Validation Of Criteria Used To Predict Warfarin Dosing Decisions, Nicole Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

People at risk for blood clots are often treated with anticoagulants, warfarin is such an anticoagulant. The dose's effect is measured by comparing the time for blood to clot to a control time called an INR value. Previous anticoagulant studies have addressed agreement between fingerstick (POC) devices and the standard laboratory, however these studies rely on mathematical formulas as criteria for clinical evaluations, i.e. clinical evaluation vs. precision and bias. Fourteen such criteria were found in the literature. There exists little consistency among these criteria for assessing clinical agreement, furthermore whether these methods of assessing agreement are reasonable estimates of …

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander May 2004

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander

Theses and Dissertations

Although the natural philosophy of Margaret Cavendish is eclectic and uncustomary, it offers an important critique of contemporary scientific methods, especially mechanism and experimentalism. As presented in Observations upon Experimental Philosophy and Blazing World, Cavendish's natural philosophy incorporates rationalistic and subjective elements, urging contemporary natural philosophers to recognize that pure objectivity is unattainable through any method of inquiry and that reason is essential in making sense and use of scientific observation.

In addition to its scientific implications, Cavendish's three-tiered model of matter presents interesting sociopolitical associations. Through her own use of metaphor and her theoretical fusion of matter and motion, …
