Grundtvig' S Relevance Today: The Current Debate, Henrik Wiegh Poulsen Jan 2006

Grundtvig' S Relevance Today: The Current Debate, Henrik Wiegh Poulsen

The Bridge

Hardly any individual has meant more to Denmark and the Danes than Grundtvig. But lately he has suffered a fall from grace in public opinion. Why is this and what does it mean to Grundtvig and to Danish society?

Matie's Dagbog [Matie' S Diary], Matie Eliva Petersen-Larsen Jan 2006

Matie's Dagbog [Matie' S Diary], Matie Eliva Petersen-Larsen

The Bridge

Matie begins her diary, "I think I will begin a diary of this my most exciting year, so I will not forget a small thing. But for now I must hurry to my stateroom and pack my luggage." That was September 7, 1900, on a ship headed for Cuxhaven, Germany, her ultimate destination being the island of Als, Denmark, where her father's relatives lived. Matie had been given this year-long trip as a gift from her parents for helping to raise her eight brothers and sisters, younger than she, and for teaching them to read and write English, as Danish …

Danish Churches And Congregations In Indianapolis, 1868-1885, Barbara R. George Jan 2006

Danish Churches And Congregations In Indianapolis, 1868-1885, Barbara R. George

The Bridge

A look at the population make-up of Indianapolis and Indiana during the time period from the end of the Civil War (approximately 1865) until the 1880s shows that the Danes had little impact in the relatively small Indiana immigration picture. Indiana was less influenced by foreign born than any other northern state. Although ranking ninth in the number of German-born residents in 1880, Indiana ranked thirteenth in the number of foreign born, and was sixth in total population. As a state it was not particularly aggressive in promoting itself as a viable destination for immigrants, and ranked only in front …

Of Two Women In Scandinavian-American Immigrant Literature, Mikael Engelstoft Hansen

The Bridge

Neither politics nor traditional history has ever spelled much interest to me. But then I read in Hilde Petra Brungot's dissertation1 on Dorthea Dahl (1881-1958)2 of this Lutheran Norwegian-American immigrant writer being an outspoken Republican.

Estimating Limiting Nutrient Loadings In An Interacting Surface And Ground Water Basin Jan 2006

Estimating Limiting Nutrient Loadings In An Interacting Surface And Ground Water Basin

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Watershed management requires the determination of both point and non-point sources of pollution within a watershed. The primary non-point source pollutants in a typical watershed are nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus), sediment, and pesticides. In the Snake River Basin, in Idaho, nutrients from non-point sources (primarily agricultural) are delivered to streams via storm water and irrigation runoff. However, the objectives of this study were to estimate the phosphorus loading from different sources in the Snake River Basin due to storm water events, to calculate the total nitrogen/phosphorus (TN/TP) ratios for land uses, and to compare and a precipitation runoff model …

Groundwater Resources Evaluation In The Piedmont Zone Of Himalaya, India, Using Isotope And Gis Techniques Jan 2006

Groundwater Resources Evaluation In The Piedmont Zone Of Himalaya, India, Using Isotope And Gis Techniques

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Integrated geohydrological, isotopes and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques have been used to delineate groundwater resources potential in the Piedmont zone of Himalayan foothill region, Uttaranchal, India. Thematic maps for hydrogeomorphology, slope, and drainage density have been prepared and integrated with the help of GIS by assigning the weights to various attributes controlling occurrence of groundwater to generate the groundwater potential map for the study area. The results indicates that the southern part of the study area has very good groundwater potential whereas the steeply sloping area in the northern part having high relief and high drainage density possesses poor …

Watershed Physiography, Land Use, And Sediment Yield: A Case Study From Northwest Arkansas, Usa Jan 2006

Watershed Physiography, Land Use, And Sediment Yield: A Case Study From Northwest Arkansas, Usa

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Precision echo sounder surveys of bathymetry and sediment thickness of Lee Creek Reservoir and Lake Shepherd Springs (northwest Arkansas) were combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses of watershed digital elevation data and land use/land cover data to evaluate the relative importance of watershed area, watershed physiography, and land use/land cover on sediment yield and reservoir sedimentation. Both reservoirs have comparable surface areas, though Lee Creek Reservoir has approximately one-half the storage capacity of Lake Shepherd Springs (9.47 x 106 m3 versus 18.8 x 106 m3 ) due to the fact that its average depth is …

Dealing With The "Third Enemy": English-Language Learning And Native-Language Maintenance Among Danish Immigrants In Utah, 1850-1930, Lynn Henrichsen, George Bailey, Jacob Huckaby Jan 2006

Dealing With The "Third Enemy": English-Language Learning And Native-Language Maintenance Among Danish Immigrants In Utah, 1850-1930, Lynn Henrichsen, George Bailey, Jacob Huckaby

The Bridge

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, over 22,000 Scandinavians joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (hereafter referred to as the church or the LDS church) and migrated to Utah.1 Well over half of these Scandinavians, 12,350 (not including children age 12 and under), were Danes.2

This influx of people who spoke a language other than English and came from a cultural background different from that of the original Anglo-American settlers of Utah presented some perplexing challenges. Even Brigham Young, the territorial governor and LDS church president, found them difficult to resolve. According to local folklore, …

Whose Memory Is It After All?, Inger M. Olsen

The Bridge

The EU (European Union) constitution was issued May 2005 and its preamble states that the writers have "let themselves be inspired by Europe's cultural, religious and humanistic inheritance which is the foundation for the development of the universal values: the individual human being's inviolable and inalienable rights as well as freedom, equality and constitutional state"1 2 The preamble goes on to mention the painful experiences that Europe has undergone and the fact that Europe is once again united. The final note states that Europe "wishes to develop further the public life's democratic and open character and work for peace, justice …

Selection Of Site For Small Hydel Using Gis In The Himalayan Region Of India Jan 2006

Selection Of Site For Small Hydel Using Gis In The Himalayan Region Of India

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The choice of site for small hydro in the inaccessible tracts of Himalayan region is a difficult task by the conventional methods. This leads to a considerable loss of time and money in selecting a proper site for small hydel. In this paper an attempt has been made to use GIS and Remote Sensing technology to arrive at various alternative sites available in the study area and finally to select the most technically suitable site. The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Curve Number (CN) method has been utilized to identify the monthly average runoff of the site. The distributed curve number …

Grundtivigianism In America, Yesterday And Today, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

It has been said, "In Denmark, everyone is a Grundtvigian whether he knows it or not." This certainly is not the case in America. Indeed, there are very few Grundtvigians in this country, and the prospects for increasing that number are very slight. This is not because the followers of Grundtvig have been "hiding their light under a bushel," but because the vast majority has not accepted it as light.

Biozone Scientific International, Inc: A Study For Customer Perception Of The Public Restrooms, Brigham Young University In Relation With Nth Existence Research, Samuel Ahola, Kyle Fraughton, Brian Mccann

Student Works

The purpose of this research project is to analyze the market demand in Utah County for the AirCare air purifier manufactured by Biozone. Using Utah County as a sort of testing ground for this product, we will attempt to determine the demand in the United States for the AirCare air purifier by answering the following questions: 1. Is there a perceived difference between sanitation and cleanliness in the United States? 2. Is there a negative perception in the United States regarding the sanitation of public restrooms? 3. How does the sanitation of a businesses public restroom affect the perception of …

Information Pursuit In Financial-Statement Analysis: Effects Of Choice, Effort, And Disaggregation, Mark W. Nelson, William B. Tayler

Faculty Publications

Prior research provides evidence that financial-statement users weight information less heavily in judgment when that information is provided in a less accessible format (e.g., information disclosed in a footnote or less important financial statement rather than being recognized on the income statement (Maines and McDaniel 2000)). We provide evidence that, conditional on users performing the analysis necessary to transform the financial statements to appear as if disclosed information had been recognized, users may weight that information more heavily than it would have been if it had been recognized. Our experiments are set in the context of constructive capitalization of operating …

Of Printers, Prophets, And Politicians: William Lyon Mackenzie, Mormonism, And Early Printing In Upper Canada, Richard Bennett, Daniel H. Olsen

Faculty Publications

Well-known in both Canadian and Latter-day Saint history is the arrival of Charles Ora Card and his faithful band of followers in southern Alberta in 1887. Less explored is the much earlier venture into Upper Canada (Ontario) of such prominent Mormon leaders as Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, Orson Hyde, and scores of others during the 1830s in their concerted attempts to promulgate their new faith on Canadian soil. Their success in converting hundreds of people, many of whom were British- and American-born Methodists or members of other nonconformist faiths, prompted Mormon leaders to send missionaries …
