An Introduction To The Leaders And Journals Of The Allgemeine Österreichische Frauenverein (Aöfv), Or General Austrian Women’S Organization: 1893-1910, Sarah Kemeny Broussard

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This is an Internet-based project that will serve as a guide to scholarly resources, including introductory material to texts written by key figures in the Austrian Women’s Movment a the turn of twentieth century. This project is also an overview of the Allgemeine Oesterreichische Frauenverein (AÖFV), or General Austrian Women’s Organization, and its key leaders and publications during its peak years between 1893-1910. The AÖFV was one of the most influential women’s organizations in fin-de-siècle Vienna, changing the face of politics and society for women. Perceptions Of Parents, Self, And God As Predictive Of Sympton Severity Among Women Beginning Inpatient Treatment For Eating Disorders, Melissa H. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation examined whether perceptions of parents, self, and God among women beginning inpatient treatment for eating disorders was predictive of symptom severity. The sample included 464 women (ages 12 to 56 years) beginning inpatient treatment for eating disorders at a private treatment facility, with the majority being Caucasian. Participants completed study measures as part of an initial battery of assessment measures, and included indices of eating disorder symptomology, parental relationships, self-esteem, and religious well-being. Multiple regression analysis showed perceptions of self and parents to be significant predictors, however perceptions of God failed to predict eating disorder symptom severity. …

The Journey Home: A Root-Metaphor Analysis Of The 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book, James N. Arrington Feb 2006

The Journey Home: A Root-Metaphor Analysis Of The 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book, James N. Arrington

Theses and Dissertations

In 1840, apostle missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled, printed, and began distributing a hymnbook that eventually would become the basis for all subsequent LDS hymnbooks published in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This thesis, as a contribution to the literature of communication, book history, and hymnology, as well as the intellectual and cultural history of the early years of the LDS Church, focuses on analyzing the poetry of the 1840 Mormon Manchester hymnbook. Using qualitative root-metaphor analysis, the author identified and analyzed expressions, supporting an emergent journey root-metaphor. He then divided the …

Composition And Distribution Of The Milliped Tribe Pachydesmini West Of The Mississippi River (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae), Rowland M. Shelley, Chris T. Mcallister Feb 2006

Composition And Distribution Of The Milliped Tribe Pachydesmini West Of The Mississippi River (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae), Rowland M. Shelley, Chris T. Mcallister

Western North American Naturalist

The xystodesmid milliped tribe Pachydesmini is supported by the autapomorphic absence of bold aposematic pigmentations and possibly also by relative somatic inflexibility; it comprises 3 component genera: PachydesmusCook, 1895; Dicellarius Chamberlin, 1920; and Thrinaxoria Chamberlin and Hoffman, 1950. Three representatives occur west of the Mississippi River—P. clarus (Chamberlin), P. crassicutis crassicutis (Wood), and T. lampra (Chamberlin). New localities are documented in Louisiana and Texas, and literature records are summarized for these states and Arkansas; records of P. clarus from Cherokee County, Texas, are the westernmost in this state for the east-Nearctic xystodesmid fauna. An apparently allopatric population of …

Kammerman List

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Having spent five years compiling our family genealogy, it was only natural for me to want to visit the villages, fields, and farms of Switzerland where my ancestors had lived. In September of 2000 my wife and I took our first vacation in years and went to Switzerland to explore the Kammermann and Hostettler family Heimats of Bowil and Guggisberg .

Willi Gautschi, translated by Karl Vonlanthen . General Henri Guisan: Commander-in-Chief of the Swiss Army in World War II. New York: Front Street Press, 2003 . xvi+ 698pp. Photographs, maps, notes and index.

For nations of the world engaged in combat during World War Two, the stakes were national survival and the price was blood and treasure. And, for the five countries that elected to remain neutral, the stakes were no less grave , for at any moment an aggressor could chose to invade with no doubt as to the outcome. Of all the neutral nations , Switzerland was both …

The Book Of Mormon And Automatic Writing, Robert A. Rees Jan 2006

The Book Of Mormon And Automatic Writing, Robert A. Rees

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Some critics of the Book of Mormon have suggested that Joseph Smith produced the book through a process known as “automatic writing,” a rapid flow of language claimed to be generated through paranormal means such as trance-like states or claimed communications with spirits. This paper presents an overview of some prominent claims of automatic writing and examines the historical and scientific evidence for the authenticity of at least some of these cases. After discussing the similarities between these works and the Book of Mormon, the paper outlines a number of features in the Book of Mormon that clearly differentiate it …

Scholarship For The Ages, Grant R. Hardy Jan 2006

Scholarship For The Ages, Grant R. Hardy

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Until now, nearly all commentaries on the Book of Mormon have focused mainly on issues of doctrine rather than beginning with the text itself. Royal Skousen’s critical text project does the opposite by treating the text itself on the word and phrase level. Skousen weighs nearly all possible evidence to deduce the events that may have led to the variations seen in the texts and to draw conclusions about which readings are most likely original. Some conclusions may surprise readers, but Skousen is more interested in candidly documenting what the texts reveal than in interpreting all the implications. Several lengthy …

The Book Of Mormon Critical Text Project, Terryl L. Givens

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal Skousen’s endeavor to recover the original text of the Book of Mormon is more complicated than it seems because it involves more than simply reproducing the original manuscript. Rather, what Skousen means by “original text” is the very language that appeared on the Urim and Thummim. Every subsequent step, such as Joseph’s reading, his scribes’ understanding and transcribing of that utterance, and Oliver Cowdery’s copying of the manuscript for the printer, exposed the text to the possibility of human subjectivity and error. This paper explains the nature and scope of Skousen’s monumental undertaking and presents some of the methods …

Prophecy And History: Structuring The Abridgment Of The Nephite Records, Steven L. Olsen Jan 2006

Prophecy And History: Structuring The Abridgment Of The Nephite Records, Steven L. Olsen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Utilizing techniques adapted from literary criticism, this paper investigates the narrative structure of the Book of Mormon, particularly the relationship between Nephi’s first-person account and Mormon’s third-person abridgment. A comparison of the order and relative prominence of material from 1 Nephi 12 with the content of Mormon’s historical record reveals that Mormon may have intentionally patterned the structure of his narrative after Nephi’s prophetic vision—a conclusion hinted at by Mormon himself in his editorial comments. With this understanding, readers of the Book of Mormon can see how Mormon’s sometimes unusual editorial decisions are actually guided by an overarching desire to …

Lattice-Based Structures For Studying Percolation In Two-Dimensional Grain Networks, Brent L. Adams, John A. Basinger, David T. Fullwood Jan 2006

Lattice-Based Structures For Studying Percolation In Two-Dimensional Grain Networks, Brent L. Adams, John A. Basinger, David T. Fullwood

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC program of the National Science Foundation under DMR-0079996. The applicability of standard lattice percolation models to a random 2-D grain structure is explored. A random network based on the triangle lattice is proposed as a more appropriate model, and results in a higher percolation threshold (0.711 compared with 0.653 for the standard hexagonal lattice). The triple junction constraint inherent in grain boundary structures is subsequently applied to the new network. This results in a lowering of the percolation threshold to 0.686; this is opposite to its effect on the standard hexagonal lattice. …

The Global Dane: Writing Soren Kierkegaard's Biography*, Joakim Garff Jan 2006

The Global Dane: Writing Soren Kierkegaard's Biography*, Joakim Garff

The Bridge

When Professor C.K.F. Molbech was asked the year after Kierkegaard's death to sketch a biographical portrait for a planned German translation of Either/Or, he went to his friend, the philosopher Hans Brochner, for advice and suggestions. Brochner, who knew the deceased personally, pondered it and then replied: When one restricts oneself to external events, there is of course very little to say about his life at all: he was born May 5, 1813, he was a student at the University in 1830, took his degree in theology in 1840, he submitted his doctoral thesis in 1841, and he died in …

What Can We Learn From Danish Farmers?, Palle Pedersen Jan 2006

What Can We Learn From Danish Farmers?, Palle Pedersen

The Bridge

During the past 100 years, Danish agriculture has developed its position and ability to compete on international markets. Since Denmark joined the European Economic Community in 1973, productivity in Danish agriculture has increased considerably; and, with a food production sufficient for 15 million people and a population of only 5.2 million, Denmark exports two-thirds of it agricultural production to more than 180 countries. Overall, Denmark is the largest food exporter in the world relative to its population.1

N.F.S. Grundtvig's Approach To Christian Community And Civic Responsibility, Mark C. Mattes Jan 2006

N.F.S. Grundtvig's Approach To Christian Community And Civic Responsibility, Mark C. Mattes

The Bridge

A perennial concern of Christian social ethics is the attempt to discern the best paradigm for relating the Christian faith and life to wider culture. H. Richard Niebuhr's typology1 of how Christ relates to culture, i. e., "Christ against culture" (sectarian), "Christ above culture" (Roman Catholic), "Christ transforming culture" (Reformed), "Christ of culture" (liberal Protestant), and "Christ and culture in paradox" (Lutheran) continues to provide a helpful framework in which to understand the role of the Christian ethos in public life. One important interpretation of this latter type, "Christ and culture in paradox" is that of the nineteenth century Danish …
