Approaching Understandings In The Book Of Abraham, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2006

Approaching Understandings In The Book Of Abraham, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

The Book of Abraham is replete with important and rich doctrines for Latter-day Saints. The existence of papyri connected with the Book of Abraham furthers interest in this volume of scripture. While much research has been conducted into the doctrines and also the origins of the Book of Abraham, clearly much more remains to be done.

Automatic Creation Of Web Services From Extraction Ontologies, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Cui Tao, Yihong Ding Jan 2006

Automatic Creation Of Web Services From Extraction Ontologies, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Cui Tao, Yihong Ding

Faculty Publications

The Semantic Web promises to provide timely, targeted access to user-specified information online. Though standardized services exist for performing this work, specifying these services is too complex for most people. Annotating these services is also problematic. A similar situation exists for traditional information extraction, where ontologies are increasingly used to specify information used by various extraction methods. The approach we introduce in this paper involves converting such ontologies into executable Java code. These APIs act individually or compositionally as services for Semantic Web extraction.

Horizontal Inequity In The Property Taxation Of Apartment, Industrial , Office, And Retail Properties, Gary C. Cornia, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2006

Horizontal Inequity In The Property Taxation Of Apartment, Industrial , Office, And Retail Properties, Gary C. Cornia, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

Researchers have carefully examined assessment unifor- mity in ad valorem taxation for single-family residential properties and they have frequently reported nonuniform outcomes in the appraisal of these properties. This study analyzes the uniformity of assessed valuations across apartment, industrial, office, and retail properties in Maricopa County (Metropolitan Phoenix), Arizona. Specifically, we investigate horizontal equity, which results when the assessment ratio (assessed value/sales price) is uniform across properties with similar market values. We examine horizontal equity over a five-and-one-half-year period (January 1998-June 2003). After applying both parametric and nonparametric tests, we find statistically significant evidence of horizontal inequity. We find that …

An Islander's View Of A Desert Kingdom: Jonathan Napela Recounts His 1869 Visit To Salt Lake City, Fred E. Woods Jan 2006

An Islander's View Of A Desert Kingdom: Jonathan Napela Recounts His 1869 Visit To Salt Lake City, Fred E. Woods

BYU Studies

Jonathan (Ionatana) Hawaii Napela (fig. 1) bridged cultures. As one of the first Hawaiian converts to Mormonism, he helped George Q. Cannon translate the Book of Mormon into the Hawaiian language in 1852–53, he instigated the first language training center for foreign missionaries in 1853, and he helped establish the first gathering place for the Hawaiian Saints in 1854. In 1869 Napela visited Salt Lake City. In an April 11, 1871, letter to Brigham Young, Napela recounted his visit as he reported it to the Hawaiian king, Kamehameha V. Written in Hawaiian, the letter is evidence of Napela’s ability to …

A Prologue To Genesis: Moses 1 In Light Of Jewish Traditions, E. Douglas Clark Jan 2006

A Prologue To Genesis: Moses 1 In Light Of Jewish Traditions, E. Douglas Clark

BYU Studies

Referring to ancient and long-lost scripture that Joseph Smith restored, Wilford Woodruff declared it to be part of “the rich treasures that are revealed unto us in the last days.” One such treasure is Moses chapter 1, a scriptural jewel we have hardly begun to appreciate but whose luster has become more apparent in light of various ancient texts and traditions that have emerged since Joseph Smith’s day. So striking are the parallels as to recall Joseph’s own prophecy that “the world will prove Joseph Smith a true prophet by circumstantial evidence.”

Songs Of Denmark, Songs To Live By: Cultural Values Expressed In Traditional Danish Music, Joy Ibsen Jan 2006

Songs Of Denmark, Songs To Live By: Cultural Values Expressed In Traditional Danish Music, Joy Ibsen

The Bridge

This past August [2005] we published Songs of Denmark [Sange for Danskere], Songs to Live By, the culmination of a project that began to take shape three years ago at the 2002 DAHS conference in Omaha, when I met Sisse Brimberg. During that meeting I shared with Sisse my desire to publish a new Danish American songbook with lyrics in both Danish and English, one with beautiful contemporary Danish photographs-a book that would appeal to the next generation. Sisse, a talented National Geographic photographer, was enthusiastic and agreed to provide access to her photographic files for the book.

Russian As The National Language: An Overview Of Language Planning In The Russian Federation, Joan F. Chevalier Jan 2006

Russian As The National Language: An Overview Of Language Planning In The Russian Federation, Joan F. Chevalier

Russian Language Journal

In June of 2005 the federal legislation On the national language was signed into law by Vladimir Putin.1 The bill, revised and renamed several times after its initial introduction in the Duma in 2001, proved to be highly controversial, stimulating lively public debate. The law merits discussion as the first major piece of federation legislation focused on language policy and language planning to appear in the Russian Federation in several years. The law addresses both language‐status planning, which concerns the status and function of the Russian language, and language corpus planning, which attempts to affect changes in language forms and …

“The State Turning To Language”: Power And Identity In Russian Language Policy Today, Lara Ryazanova‐Clarke

Russian Language Journal

The first years of the twenty‐first century in Russia saw a considerable rise in the state’s regulation of language. In the words of one of the agents of this regulation, Natalia Liashchenko, a Consultant for the Committee for the Nationalities, “Определенный поворот к проблемам русского языка произошел и в органах государственной власти России.” The engagement of the state by way of regulations in the national discussion of the nature and quality of the Russian language demonstrates ‘the state power turning to language’.

Interaction Of Native- And Second- Language Vowel System(S) In Early And Late Bilinguals, Wendy Baker, Pavel Trofimovich Jan 2006

Interaction Of Native- And Second- Language Vowel System(S) In Early And Late Bilinguals, Wendy Baker, Pavel Trofimovich

Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to determine how bilinguals’ age at the time of language acquisition influenced the organization of their phonetic system(s). The productions of six English and five Korean vowels by English and Korean monolinguals were compared to the productions of the same vowels by early and late Korean-English bilinguals varying in amount of exposure to their second language. Results indicated that bilinguals’ age profoundly influenced both the degree and the direction of the interaction between the phonetic systems of their native (L1) and second (L2) languages. In particular, early bilinguals manifested a bidirectional L1-L2 influence and …

Classification Of Spatio -Temporal Pattern Of Rainfall In Iran Using A Hierarchical And Divisive Cluster Analysis Jan 2006

Classification Of Spatio -Temporal Pattern Of Rainfall In Iran Using A Hierarchical And Divisive Cluster Analysis

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The identification of spatial rainfall pattern is an essential task for hydrologists, climatologists as well as regional and local planners and managers. This is due to the variability of both the temporal spatial distribution of rainfall. In this study, a hierarchical and divisive cluster analysis was used to categorize these patterns of rainfall in Iran. According to results obtained, there are eight main spatial groups of annual rainfall over Iran. These groups can be classified into 3 main seasonal rainfall regimes namely, winter, winter-spring and fall regimes. The results also show that the elevation and sea neighborhood affect rainfall pattern …

A convenience sample of 116 female students at a private American university and 76 of their mothers was utilized. Multiple regression and t-tests were used to analyze the data. Findings suggested that body image and beliefs about appearance pose leisure constraints for college-age and middle-age women. Findings also suggested that …

The Mystery Of The Missing Referent: Objects, Procedures, And The Problem Of The Instruction Follower, Timothy Koschmann, Charles Goodwin, Curtis Lebaron, Paul Feltovich Jan 2006

The Mystery Of The Missing Referent: Objects, Procedures, And The Problem Of The Instruction Follower, Timothy Koschmann, Charles Goodwin, Curtis Lebaron, Paul Feltovich

Faculty Publications

An omni-relevant issue for workplace studies is how participants engaged in joint activity make sense of the objects that constitute their shared material environment. In this study we examine a surgery taped in a teaching hospital to explore how formal procedures make relevant certain sorts of objects and, at the same time, are constituted through them. We proceed by unpacking on particular strop of talk and demonstrate how its determinate sense rests upon a vernacular understanding of unfolding procedure. We treat surgical procedures as a sequences of projected instructions. Competent design of technologies intended to support cooperative work must rest …

Evidence On What Cfos Think About The Ipo Process: Practice, Theory, And Managerial Implications, James C. Brau, Stanley E. Fawcett Jan 2006

Evidence On What Cfos Think About The Ipo Process: Practice, Theory, And Managerial Implications, James C. Brau, Stanley E. Fawcett

Faculty Publications

Many privately held companies aspire to go public through an initial public offering. But the IPO process is time-consuming, expensive, and fraught with uncertainty. With the aim of shedding light on the process and reducing at least some of the uncertainty, the authors asked several hundred CFOs to share their experiences and perceptions with regard to six specific aspects of the IPO process: (1) motives for going public; (2) the timing of IPOs; (3) criteria for choosing an underwriter; (4) cause of IPO underpricing; (5) IPO signaling; and (6) reasons to stay private.

Death Of Procedural Safeguards: Prior Restraint, Due Process And The Elusive First Amendment Value Of Content Neutrality, Edward L. Carter, Brad Clark Jan 2006

Death Of Procedural Safeguards: Prior Restraint, Due Process And The Elusive First Amendment Value Of Content Neutrality, Edward L. Carter, Brad Clark

Faculty Publications

In recent years, federal courts eroded the procedural safeguards required for prior restraint licensing schemes established in Freedman v. Maryland. The Supreme Court of the United States stated that the dangers of prior restraint were accounted for by content neutrality. But a close examination of federal courts of appeals opinions since 2002 reveals that erosion of procedural safeguards may threaten speech interests. First, procedural safeguards have not been required, in some cases, even for content-based prior restraints. Second, courts of appeals have held that, in the context of content-neutral prior restraints, the First Amendment no longer requires a time limit …

Why Do Reits Repurchase Stock? Extricating The Effect Of Managerial Signaling In Open Market Share Repurchase Announcements, James C. Brau, Andrew Holmes Jan 2006

Why Do Reits Repurchase Stock? Extricating The Effect Of Managerial Signaling In Open Market Share Repurchase Announcements, James C. Brau, Andrew Holmes

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the effect of stock repurchase announcements on equity returns for publicly traded real estate investment trusts (REITs). In addition to providing analysis of the corporate decision to repurchase shares, the study of share repurchases in the context of REITs provides a novel opportunity to disentangle the impact of competing theories for the abnormal returns observed around repurchase announcements. Prior literature advances six hypotheses to explain the stock price reaction associated with repurchases. Given that the theories all predict the same stock price reaction, existing studies are unable to disentangle the competing hypotheses. The intent of this research …

Relation-Specific Capabilities And Barriers To Knowledge Transfers: Creating Advantage Through Network Relationships, Jeffrey H. Dyer, Nile W. Hatch Jan 2006

Relation-Specific Capabilities And Barriers To Knowledge Transfers: Creating Advantage Through Network Relationships, Jeffrey H. Dyer, Nile W. Hatch

Faculty Publications

This study examines the role of network knowledge resources in influencing firm performance. More specifically: Can a firm that uses the identical supplier network as competitors and purchases similar inputs from the same plants achieve a competitive advantage through that network? In a sample of U.S. automotive suppliers selling to both Toyota and U.S. automakers, we found that greater knowledge sharing on the part of Toyota resulted in a faster rate of learning within the suppliers’ manufacturing operations devoted to Toyota. Indeed, from 1990 to 1996 suppliers reduced defects by 50 percent for Toyota vs. only 26 percent for their …

Learning Competent Fathering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Marital Intimacy And Fathering, Kay Bradford, Alan J. Hawkins Jan 2006

Learning Competent Fathering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Marital Intimacy And Fathering, Kay Bradford, Alan J. Hawkins

Faculty Publications

Although scholars have documented many links between marital relationships and parenting, these associations are not commonly explained in terms of behavior that is learned or achieved over time. This paper examines the idea that good fathering – conceptualized here as competent fathering – is the result of a developmental process, and that a loving, committed relationship between parents creates a context in which traits supportive of caring fathering are likely to be learned and practiced. After setting the stage conceptually, we provide a modest initial test of this hypothesis to discern the associations between three components of marital intimacy (emotional …

The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks Jan 2006

The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks

Faculty Publications

Our chapter addresses how the family promotes or hinders transcendence of the self in children, that is, how the family is a context in which spiritual development occurs. Due to space limitations, our emphasis is on socialization and interaction processes within the family and not on other issues such as psychodynamic processes (e.g., Rizzuto, 1979) or faith development (e.g., Fowler, 1981). There are many motivations to explore family socialization of religious and spiritual development. One, family spirituality and religiosity are linked with many desirable outcomes and inversely with negative outcomes in children and youth. (Other chapters in this volume examine …

Unifying Language Modeling Capabilities For Flexible Interaction, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Rebecca Diane Madsen Jan 2006

Unifying Language Modeling Capabilities For Flexible Interaction, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Rebecca Diane Madsen

Faculty Publications

Dialogue processing has taken several different forms in recent years; in this paper we address a cognitive modeling approach to the problem. We begin by sketching some of our work in this area and how it derives from prior research in cognition, modeling, natural language processing, and discourse recipe compilation. We then note that, whereas the complexities of natural language— especially spoken language—have been primarily addressed by technologies that target lower-level linguistic processing, higherlevel processing has been less well studied. We introduce our approach, which is to use an agent-based cognitive modeling architecture for dialogue processing. We mention some of …

Abraham Van Buskirk: United Empire Loyalist Opposed To The American War For Independence, Rolf Buschardt Christensen

The Bridge

In 1983 when Canada celebrated the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Loyalists-the refugees from the American Revolution-the Canadian media reported that among the Loyalists was Abraham Van Buskirk, who was of Danish origin. That's all the media said about him; the point being that not all Loyalists were of English background. Here's his story-and the historical background, which shaped his life.

Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll Dec 2005

Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis utilized a linear analytical approach to explore the damage tolerance or residual strength as a function of increasing damage in traditional single and hybrid-grid IsoTruss® structures. Residual strength was studied for structures subjected to axial compression, torsion and flexural bending, independently. Carbon/epoxy material properties were applied in all load cases, and fiberglass/epoxy material properties were also applied in the flexural bending case. Prior to imposing damage conditions, the IsoTruss® structures were parametrically optimized to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Typical compression strut, driveshaft, and utility pole specifications governed the design strength dimensions and boundary conditions. Damage growth was …

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall Dec 2005

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall

Theses and Dissertations

Many environments in which an agent can use reinforcement learning techniques to learn profitable strategies are affected by other learning agents. These situations can be modeled as general-sum games. When playing repeated general-sum games with other learning agents, the goal of a self-interested learning agent is to maximize its own payoffs over time. Traditional reinforcement learning algorithms learn myopic strategies in these games. As a result, they learn strategies that produce undesirable results in many games. In this dissertation, we develop and analyze algorithms that learn non-myopic strategies when playing many important infinitely repeated general-sum games. We show that, in …

Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley Dec 2005

Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley

Theses and Dissertations

Although there is general agreement that feedback plays an important role in student performance, the majority of the studies found in the research literature explore the impact of different types of feedback in a traditional and university-level setting. In order to explore the impact of different feedback types in a non-traditional distance learning setting, 352 high school students enrolled in courses offered through BYU's Independent Study (IS) department received either delayed feedback or immediate feedback generated by Speedback™, BYU's automated grading and feedback program, depending on whether they had opted to submit end of unit assignments by mail or …

Toiling Among The Seed Of Israel: A Comparison Of Puritan And Mormon Missions To The Indians, Christina A. Skousen Dec 2005

Toiling Among The Seed Of Israel: A Comparison Of Puritan And Mormon Missions To The Indians, Christina A. Skousen

Theses and Dissertations

Substantial comparative analyses of Puritanism and Mormonism are lacking in historical scholarship, despite noted similarities between the two religions. This study helps to fill that void by comparing the Puritan and Mormon proselytization efforts among the Indians that occurred at the respective sites of Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Southern Indian Mission. In my examination of the missionization attempts that took place at these two locations, I analyze a common motive and method of the two denominations for attempting to Christianize the Indians. The Puritan and Mormon missionaries proselytizing in Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Southern Indian Mission shared an …

Toward A Domain Theory Of Fluent Oral Reading With Expression, Reo H. Mcbride Dec 2005

Toward A Domain Theory Of Fluent Oral Reading With Expression, Reo H. Mcbride

Theses and Dissertations

Today's educators are in need of tests or rating systems that provide specific and valid feedback to parents, students and programs. This need includes the area of expressive fluent oral reading. One way to address this need is to provide a rating system based on theoretical models that explore how fluency develops. This study explores the dimensions, constructs, or aspects that make up fluency. It also explores whether there is a sequence or order in how fluent oral reading with expression develops and the theoretical reasons for that ordering. This study further addresses whether word recognition or accuracy confounds the …

Google And The Print Library Initiative: To Scan Or Not To Scan, Peter A. Zuber Dec 2005

Google And The Print Library Initiative: To Scan Or Not To Scan, Peter A. Zuber

Faculty Publications

Already a strong presence on the web, Google has been of particular interest to those in the library industry, raising concerns over future roles that libraries and librarians would play in a Google-dominated, information-seeking world. Noted not only for its search capability, Google had previously demonstrated its desire to expand its role as an information provider with such tools as Google Earth (a remarkable 3-dimensional viewing tool of the planet), Google Scholar (a search tool designed to return only peer reviewed scholarly content) and Google News and Images (capable of searching thousands of news stories and retrieving a myriad of …
