Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower Apr 1982

Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This paper suggests procedures for testing behavioral theory with scripture. A theory of self-betrayal (Warner, et. al., 1979) is examined against the series of self-betrayal "strategies" Cain used to avoid the consequences of killing his brother Abel. The theory fits and explains well the behavior of Cain. A second example of testing theory with scripture deals with guidelines for assessing fundamental assumptions upon which theories of behavior are constructed.

The Elizabethan Clerk Of The Privy Council, F. J. Platt Jan 1982

The Elizabethan Clerk Of The Privy Council, F. J. Platt

Quidditas

One of the least understood facts of Elizabethan administrative history is the importance of the clerkship of the Privy Council. Considered a position of "no small esteem," this "office was singularly rich in men of distinction." Indeed, with the exception of a select few privy councilors, it was the Council clerks who handled the lion's share of the day-to-day business of English government.

The Zodiac Man In Medieval Medical Astrology, Charles Clark Jan 1982

The Zodiac Man In Medieval Medical Astrology, Charles Clark

Quidditas

A naked male figure was a familiar illustration in many medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Standing with his legs and arms slightly spread, the twelve images or names of the zodiac were superimposed on his body, from his head (Aries) to his feet (Pisces). Used as a quick reference by physicians, barber-surgeons, and even laymen, the figure indicated the part of the body which was "ruled" by a specific sign of the zodiac. Once the correct sign was determined for the particular part of the body, the proper time for surgery, bloodletting, administration of medication, or even the cutting of hair …

"The Wyclyf" — Thrills And Dangers Of Editing A Medieval Text, Allen D. Breck

Quidditas

In 1983 we shall be observing the six hundredth anniversary of the death of one of England's great contributors, along with William of Ockham and John Duns Scotus, to the thought, learning, and literature of the fourteenth century. John Wyclyf died at the comparatively advanced age oof sixty-four after two years' illness attendant upon a stroke, on St. Sylvester's day, December 31, 1384. He had been stricken a second time while hearing Mass said by his curate in his parish church at Lutterworth, some thirteen miles northeast of Coventry. We know nothing about his burial, save that in accordance with …

Jacob Maag (1881-1980), Swiss Stone Carver And Sculptor In The Midwest, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Jacob Maag was born in Neunkirch, Canton Schaffhausen, in 1881 and came to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1905. From 1905 to 1961 he worked as a stonecutter and sculptor mainly in Omaha, but also in other parts of the Midwest. In 1962 he became the subject of an oral history project of the Greater Omaha Historical Society as a "pioneer citizen" in their "I Remember" series. The Greater Omaha Historical Society is now defunct, but thanks to Walter Wullschleger (see SAHS Newsletter, XVI, No. 1 (Jan. 1980), 31-36) we received a transcript of that interview. We are pleased to give the …

Sex Therapy With Lds Couples, D. Corydon Hammond, Robert F. Stahmann Jan 1982

Sex Therapy With Lds Couples, D. Corydon Hammond, Robert F. Stahmann

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Recently, Allen Bergin in his President's Message in the Spring 1981 AMCAP Newsletter presesnted a statement of his views on sex therapy suggesting that is merely represents "modern sensual technologies" which "too frequently offer sensual substitutes for genuine intimacy" (1981a, p.1). It is our belief thet Dr. Bergin has presented an extreme view which some members may have misinterpreted as an AMCAP position paper rather than an individual's opinion. The authors, having specialized in the treatment of sexual dysfunction as well as in marital therapy, will present an alternative viewpoint on the value and need for sex therapy among LDS …

Albert Gallatin, 176101849, A Genevan In The American Enlightenment: An Essay In Interpretation, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Albert Gallatin has been called "America's Forgotten Statesman."1 A review of scholarly and public endeavors shows, however, that he has received serious attention, especially in recent decades. Best known is, perhaps, the excellent biography by Raymond Walters Jr. of 1957, a concise, learned, and balanced portrait.2 In 1958 Rutgers University Press published Alexander Balinky's Albert Gallatin Fiscal Theories and Policies, a comprehensive study. Although Balinky profoundly misunderstood .Gallatin in favor of Hamiltonian programs, he offered nevertheless a scholarly treatise to be reckoned with.3 In 1963 Gayle Thornbrough edited the Correspondence of John Badollet and Albert Gallatin …

The Historical Evolution Of The Death Of King John In Three Renaissance Plays, Carole Levin Jan 1982

The Historical Evolution Of The Death Of King John In Three Renaissance Plays, Carole Levin

Quidditas

Although King John died of dysentery in 1216, three Renaissance dramas, John Bale's King Johan, The Troublesome Reign of King John, and Shakespeare's King John, reflect the influence of late medieval legends that John was dramatically poisoned. Bale and the anonymous author of The Troublesome Reign emphasize the horror of the king's death, dwelling upon his role as a religious leader; Shakespeare, however, separates John from the kingship, focusing our attention upon a frightened man. This separation echoes the medieval political theory that the kingship is composed of two bodies. By deliberately stripping away the Christian images that …
