Emotional Intelligence Documentary - The Art Of Compassion: Learning From Spain, Poetry, And Medicine, Emily E. Morin

Cultivating Emotional Intelligence through the Humanities in Spain

The Art of Compassion: Learning from Spain, Poetry, and Medicine explores how art, literature, and cultural experiences can deepen compassion and inform more human-centered healthcare. Drawing on works encountered during a Medical Humanities study abroad program in Spain, the documentary examines compassion as a skill that can be cultivated through self-reflection, recognition of shared vulnerability, and appreciation of multiple perspectives. Through analysis of poetry by Lope de Vega, Jaime Sabines, and Yehuda Halevi, alongside artworks by Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, and Pablo Picasso, the film connects themes of empathy, suffering, identity, and healing to contemporary clinical practice. The documentary also …

Introduction: Poststroke depression (PSD) affects approximately 33% of stroke survivors and is associated with worse outcomes, poor quality of life (QOL) and mortality. Despite its prevalence and consequences, there is no consensus on the most effective strategy for PSD prevention. Behavioural activation (BA) is an effective intervention for depression across diverse populations and is considered safer, better tolerated and a longer-lasting alternative to antidepressant medications. This study aims to test the effectiveness of a remotely delivered BA intervention to prevent PSD (Tele-BA-S).

Methods and analysis: We will conduct a randomised effectiveness trial of 350 low-income adults (≥ 55 years) within …

Seizure-Induced Resolution Of Depressive And Psychotic Symptoms In A Pregnant Patient: A Case Of Spontaneous Neuromodulation, Ariel E. Sosa Gomez, Ryan M. Go, David Valdez

School of Medicine Publications

Many individuals with epilepsy often develop major depressive disorder (MDD), creating a complex interplay that exacerbates outcomes for affected individuals. The relationship between these disorders may be mediated by overlapping neurobiological mechanisms, including disturbances in the limbic system, neurotransmitter imbalances, and the psychosocial stressors of chronic illness. While the co-occurrence typically leads to a worsening of symptoms, rare instances have been reported in which seizure activity appears to ameliorate psychiatric symptomatology. We present the case of a 23-year-old pregnant Hispanic female with a longstanding history of treatment-resistant depression with psychotic features and epilepsy, who demonstrated full remission of depressive and …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency characterized by severe hyperthermia and acute central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. We describe a 72-year-old man who was found unresponsive in his vehicle on a day with ambient temperatures exceeding 90°F. On arrival, his core temperature was 105.8°F, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was 5. Despite prompt initiation of active cooling and supportive care with normalization of body temperature, the patient developed persistent and fluctuating encephalopathy. Extensive metabolic, infectious, and toxicologic evaluations were unrevealing. Thyroid-stimulating hormone was normal, arterial blood gases showed no acid-base derangements, ammonia and liver function tests were within normal …

Intramuscular Nad⁺ Therapy And Neuroenergetic Symptom Modulation: An Exploratory Retrospective Human Pilot Study, Zachary J. Dickey Do, Kirtan Patel Bs, Randy Aldret Edd, Cscs, Atc, Navneet Sharma Md, Glenn Goodwin Do

Journal for Sports Neuroscience

Abstract

Background: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) is a central regulator of neuronal energy metabolism, mitochondrial function, and axonal integrity. Following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and repetitive subconcussive exposure, neurons undergo a neurometabolic crisis characterized by impaired oxidative phosphorylation, increased ATP demand, and depletion of intracellular NAD⁺ pools. Pre clinical models demonstrate that NAD⁺ depletion contributes to central energy dysregulation, cognitive dysfunction, and axonal and neuronal degeneration through disruption of NAD⁺-dependent pathways including SIRT1-mediated mitochondrial resilience, PARP1-driven NAD⁺ consumption, and SARM1-associated axonal breakdown. Despite growing preclinical evidence supporting NAD⁺based neuroprotection, human clinical data remains absent.

Methods: A real-world clinical pilot …

Optimization Of Cyanide Leaching Process Based On Grain Size And Slurry Density In Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining In Tatelu Area, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, Dadan Mohamad Nurjaman, Harmin Sulistiyaning Titah, Adji Kawigraha, Ipung Fitri Purwanti, Wahyu Hidayat

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Tatelu Village, North Sulawesi, has shifted from mercury amalgamation to cyanide leaching. However, gold recovery remains inefficient, requiring process optimization. This study uses multiple linear regression analysis to evaluate the influence of grain size and slurry density on gold dissolution. The results indicate that grain size plays a dominant role in leaching efficiency, while slurry density, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and cyanide concentration have statistically insignificant effects (p > 0.05). Laboratory tests show that finer grain sizes enhance dissolution, with the highest recovery rate of 89.08% achieved at 75% passing through 44 …

Lies Begin At Conception: Crisis Pregnancy Centers And The Right To Deceive, Abigail Gainer Jun 2026

Lies Begin At Conception: Crisis Pregnancy Centers And The Right To Deceive, Abigail Gainer

Brooklyn Law Review

Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) are faith-based, free pregnancy care facilities designed to attract vulnerable pregnant individuals, especially those who may be considering abortion. Through the use of deceptive practices, CPCs, which far outnumber abortion clinics, are able to intercept pregnant people seeking care and discourage or prevent them from receiving abortion care. Pro-life legal groups aggressively wage legal battles on states who seek to curb CPC-propagated deception. In 2018, one of these groups achieved a victory for CPCs in NIFLA v. Becerra, where the Supreme Court held that California’s regulations requiring CPCs to inform clients about state-sponsored abortion services and …

Child Abuse In The Foster Care System: Articulating A New Standard Of Negligence For Civil Actions Against State Foster Agencies, Isabel Loughlin Jun 2026

Child Abuse In The Foster Care System: Articulating A New Standard Of Negligence For Civil Actions Against State Foster Agencies, Isabel Loughlin

Brooklyn Law Review

The foster care system falls under the domain of each state’s family courts. State foster care agencies oversee the removal of children from their homes, the placement of children in temporary foster homes, and the process of reunification with the birth family if possible. This system is meant to protect children from abuse, but far too often foster care agencies fail in their duty to monitor the wellbeing of children after they are placed in a foster home. There is a crisis of child abuse within the foster care system, and the only avenue for recourse for children who have …

Scientific Note: Here The Whole Time: A Revised Understanding Of White Alumroot (Heuchera Alba, Saxifragaceae) In The Susquehanna River Valley., Anais Barnes, Madeline Wickers, Scott Schuette, Tanisha M. Williams, Ryan Folk, Christopher T. Martine

Faculty Journal Articles

Heuchera alba and H. pubescens (Saxifragaceae) are closely related species of alumroot endemic to the Appalachian region of eastern North America that can be difficult to distinguish morphologically. Heuchera pubescens has been understood to occupy a range from Kentucky to Pennsylvania, with the distribution of H. alba restricted to Virginia and West Virginia—plus a recently-recorded extension into Pennsylvania discovered with the help of social media. The uncovering of H. alba in Pennsylvania has challenged historical perceptions of Heuchera distributions in the state, particularly as this relates to the current concept of H. pubescens which may be in need of revision. …

Rape Pregnancies And Consequent Ptsd Resulting From The Overturn Of Roe V. Wade, Emma Lindenfelser, Yulia Garaeva, Nenette Nti-Agyemang, Ellen Davis, Anna Kabwa, Alexandra M Calaman

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Prior to the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, access to safe legal abortions was limited and often restricted along racial, economic, and geographic lines. Nearly fifty years later, women’s health policy evolved again following the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturning Roe v. Wade. This court ruling decimated federal protections of abortion. This paper presents the research that the 2022 Dobbs judicial decision may contribute to and exacerbate rape-related PTSD on 1 out of 20 American who are unable to access a safe abortion after a rape-related pregnancy. Pregnant women living in conservative states that have outlawed …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Little is known about how or when language and visuospatial processing lateralise in the brain, and if individual differences in lateralisation are related to early language or visuospatial abilities. We explored if patterns of language and visuospatial lateralisation are related to cognitive skills in young children. A large sample of 3-year-olds (n = 136) attempted two functional transcranial Doppler ultrasound (fTCD) tasks to estimate language and visuospatial lateralisation. At the group level, language was lateralised to the left hemisphere, but visuospatial processing was weakly lateralised to the right hemisphere. The relationship between patterns of lateralisation and cognitive skills was investigated …

Ml Models For Child-Parent Speech Diarization, Kenneth Kang Jun 2026

Ml Models For Child-Parent Speech Diarization, Kenneth Kang

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

This senior design thesis presents a machine learning research pipeline for child-parent and child-directed speech diarization. Speech diarization is the task of determining who spoke and when in an audio recording. Although this problem is well studied in adult meeting, broadcast, and conversational speech, child-parent audio is a more uneven setting. Children may speak in short turns, change pitch quickly, vocalize without producing clear words, interrupt adults, overlap with adult speech, cry, laugh, or code switch. These behaviors are normal in real family interaction, but they can confuse diarization systems that were mostly designed and evaluated on adult speech.

The …

Best Practices For Interprofessional, Community-Based Interventions In Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Among Adults Aged 50 And Older, Julie Joseph Mrs

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is rapidly increasing among adults aged 50 years and older in the United States, posing a significant public health challenge. In 2021, an estimated 38.4 million Americans had diabetes, with adults aged 50years and above constituting a disproportionately large segment of this population. Evidence suggests that community-based lifestyle and educational interventions are effective in reducing the risk of T2DM among older adults. These interventions particularly promote dietary modification, increased physical activity, and diabetes education. Integrating the expertise of nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, physicians, and other professionals through interprofessional collaboration strengthens diabetes prevention and …
