The Matheson Coalition, Becky Snow Jan 1983

The Matheson Coalition, Becky Snow

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In political circl~, the State of Utah is often referred to as a "hive of conservatism." Several factors seem to indicate that this reputation is well deserved. For example, recent survey data indicate that 54 percent of the voters in the state identify themselves as either strong, not so strong, or leaning Republicans--this is far above the national average of 23 percent Republican identifiers as estimated by Gallup opinion polls. Also, many political observers feel that Utah's all Republican Washington delegation currently constitutes the most conservative team in Congress. Additionally, in the Presidential Election of 1980, Jimmy Carter, the Democratic …

Clausens On The Move: Chicago, St. Ansgar, Virginia, 1870-1873, J. R. Christianson

The Bridge

Few Danes in America have been as influential in Scandinavian American life as Claus Laurits Clausen. From his arrival in Wisconsin in 1843 until his retirement in Minnesota more than forty years later, C. L. Clausen was a central figure in the life of Norwegians and Danes throughout the United States of America. H. Fred Swansen' s biography remains the standard work on Clausen's life in English, but an earlier biography in Danish contains important documentary material, and there are numerous biographical sketches, including a particularly sensitive one by Clausen's son-in-law, Svein Strand.

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Career Appraisal And Status Of Burnout Among Religious Educators: Within The Education System Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Keith W. Allred

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the predictive power of items regarding career appraisal in correctly classifying the status of burnout among Church Education System educators with six to ten years of service. Also, the factors considered most effective as deterrents to burnout were determined.

It was found that those who (1) did not feel they were progressing in their careers and (2) would change careers if possible were most likely to report burnout. Feeling needed in one's assignment and being recognized and appreciated for one's accomplishments, besides having a happy marriage, enjoying life, and living Gospel …

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler Jan 1983

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …

Temperature And Salinity Relationships Of The Nevadan Relict Dace, Steven Vigg Dec 1982

Temperature And Salinity Relationships Of The Nevadan Relict Dace, Steven Vigg

Great Basin Naturalist

The relict dace, Relictus solitarius, represents the only genus and species of fish native to Ruby Butte, Goshute, and Steptoe valleys in northeastern Nevada. In their natural habitats temperature ranges 0–25 C and salinity 175–1,158 mg/liter. The upper median thermal tolerance limit (96-hr TL50) of Butte Valley relict dace was 30.6 C when acclimated at 18–20 C. Relict dace tolerated total dissolved solids (TDS) of 11,043 mg/liter with no mortality during 96-hr exposures, but experienced 100 percent mortality at concentrations of 15,759 mg/liter with a mean resistance time of 23 hours. Tolerance of relict dace to 30 C was lowered …

Toward An Understanding Of The Heart -- A Scriptural And Psychological Perspective, Paul F. Cook Oct 1982

Toward An Understanding Of The Heart -- A Scriptural And Psychological Perspective, Paul F. Cook

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The word heart was used by the Hebrews and Greeks as an equivalent of our modern words of mind, emotion, will and personality. The Lord who revealed his ideas about the heart anciently has continued to use this word in modern revelations, thus raising the possibility that it is still useful to us. This paper defines heart, examines seven ways a treasure is established in the heart, and draws implications for a theory of personality and psychotherapy. Recommendations for research are also included.

Economic Implications Of The Policy For Pricing And Allocating Rice In Egypt, Sonia Mohamed Ali, B. Gardner Delworth Jul 1982

Economic Implications Of The Policy For Pricing And Allocating Rice In Egypt, Sonia Mohamed Ali, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Rice is both heavily subsidized and rationed in Egypt. This policy has significant distributive effects and especially benefits low income consumers in both urban and rural areas of the country. In addition, the policy has important allocative effects in shifting scarce resources to inefficient uses. This paper attempts to measure the economic inefficiency associated with this policy in order that the policy makers may judge better whether or not the distributive benefits are worth the efficiency costs.
