Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken
Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
Current planning and development of collections in the social sciences and humanities for German-speaking Europe, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia reflect the changing needs of research, strict budgetary limits, the prevailing publishing market in those countries, and certain innovations in library automation. Librarians responsible for supporting an area study of Northern Europe may shape the trends to their advantage by careful policy planning, by informed financial choices, by the use of data bases and resource sharing, by privately-nurtured channels of acquisition and support and by a continuing self-education program that might include participation in the activities of the CES and WESS.
Winter Stomach Contents Of South Dakota Badgers, E. Blake Hart, Michael Trumbo
Winter Stomach Contents Of South Dakota Badgers, E. Blake Hart, Michael Trumbo
Great Basin Naturalist
Stomach contents of 33 hunter- and trapper-killed badgers, Taxidea taxus, from northeastern South Dakota were examined during the 1980–81 fur season. Mammal prey species made up the bulk of the ingested food, followed by plant materials. Approximately 40 percent of stomach contents were mammals, 35 percent were of plant origin, 10 percent were birds, 10 percent were insects, while the remainder was mostly inorganic materials. Little significant difference was found in variety of food items consumed by each sex. South Dakota badgers are opportunistic foragers in the wintertime when food is scarce. Individual food items are usually taken in quantity …
Religiosity And Mental Health: A Critical Reevaluation And Meta-Analysis, Allen E. Bergin
Religiosity And Mental Health: A Critical Reevaluation And Meta-Analysis, Allen E. Bergin
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
For many decades, lassitude and malaise hae afflicted the relationship between psychology and religion. Interest and activity in this relationship are now being renewed, and old controversies with new terms are resurfacing. This article reviews the extensive empirical literature on the topic and shows that religiosity is a complex phenomenon with numerous correlates and consequences that defy simple interpretations. A meta-analysis of 24 pertinent studies revealed no support for the preconception that religiousness is necessarily corelated with psychopathology; but it also showed only slightly positive correlates of religion. Sociological and psychiatric reports were more favorable to religion. The data's ambiguities …

Pronghorn Responses To Hunting Coyotes, Timothy D. Reynolds
Pronghorn Responses To Hunting Coyotes, Timothy D. Reynolds
Great Basin Naturalist
Six accounts of pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) chasing or attacking coyotes (Canis latrans) are described: three chases by individual pronghorn does, two by herds of antelope, and one joint effort by a pronghorn doe and a Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus). Modifications of Berger's (1979) ungulate antipredatory defense model are proposed.

Deer Mouse, Peromyscus Maniculatus, And Associated Rodent Fleas (Siphonaptera) In The Arctic-Alpine Life Zone Of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, R. B. Eads, E. G. Campos
Great Basin Naturalist
Peromyscus maniculatus and related small rodents have been examined for ectoparasites in the tundra region of the Rocky Mountain National Park 1974–1979. One hundred and ninety-four P. maniculatus were examined from two tundra sites. Flea infestation rates were 1.9 fleas per mouse examined and 4.1 fleas per infested mouse. Species taken in significant numbers were Monopsyllus thambus (51 percent), Peromyscopsylla hesperomys (34 percent), Malaraeus euphorbi (9 percent), and Catallagia calisheri (4 percent). Peromyscus maniculatus host/flea relationships in the tundra are compared with those in other life zones in the park.

Life History Of The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Henshawi, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, William F. Sigler, William T. Helm, Paul A. Kucera, Steven Vigg, Gar W. Workman
Great Basin Naturalist
The Pyramid Lake Lahontan cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki henshawi) population was sampled on a monthly basis from November 1975 through December 1977. A subsample of 676 trout, stratified by fish size and lake habitat, provided biological data. The entire population is presently derived from hatchery production, stocked at lengths of approximately 75 to 300 mm. Peak annulus formation occurs in March and April, followed by the period of maximum growth. Scale patterns illustrate a variable growing season. Maximum growth in length is in the first three years of life; after that males begin to grow faster than females. …
Evaluation Of A Program To Control Hydatid Disease In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, John R. Crellin, Craig R. Nichols, Peter M. Schantz
Evaluation Of A Program To Control Hydatid Disease In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, John R. Crellin, Craig R. Nichols, Peter M. Schantz
Great Basin Naturalist
A program to control hydatid disease in central Utah was evaluated by: (1) surveillance of infection in dogs and sheep, (2) questioning adult residents of two Sanpete County communities (Fountain Green and Spring City) about their knowledge of hydatid disease and their attitudes toward preventive measures, (3) interviewing local officials to evaluate the proposed implementation of proper community-wide measures, (4) analyzing records of prophylactic treatment of dogs with praziquantel, and (5) comparing scores of tests given to third and fourth grade students before and after they colored an educational pamphlet about hydatid disease.
Infection rates of Echinococcus granulosus in dogs …
William Turner's Use Of The Dialogue Form As A Weapon Of Religious Controversy, R. Pineas
William Turner's Use Of The Dialogue Form As A Weapon Of Religious Controversy, R. Pineas
Quidditas
While the entire subject of Tudor religious polemics has been more often regretted than studied, some of the more prominent controversialists, such as William Tyndale or Thomas More, have received some attention, but such has not been the fate of William Turner (?-1568). No full-length treatment of Turner exists, and what studies there are concern themselves mainly with his activities as a naturalist. This is all the more surprising when one considers that of all the radical Reformers who were dissatisfied with Henry VIII's reformation and transformation of the English Church into the Church of England, William Turner, physician to …

Bacon's Allegory Of Science: The Theater Of The New Atlantis, Patricia Demers
Quidditas
I conceive that I perform the office of a true priest of the sense (from which all knowledge in nature must be sought, unless men mean to go mad) and a not unskilful interpreter of its oracles. ("The Plan of the Work," The Great Instauration)
Dramatic poesy among the ancients ... has been regarded by learned men and great philosophers as a kind of musician's bow by which men's minds may be played upon. (Translation of the "De Augmentis," The Second Book)
Oral Hygiene In Elizabethan England, Karl H. Dannenfeldt
Oral Hygiene In Elizabethan England, Karl H. Dannenfeldt
Quidditas
The men and women of Elizabethan England were well aware of their living in an age of transition. The old order was changing and empirical maxims were replacing the ideals of classical humanism. The new courtier and the new man of the middle class searched for pragmatic rules that led to success, recognition, and a more gracious way of life that befitted the new wealth.
