Revealing Linear Aggregates Of Light Harvesting Antenna Proteins In Photosynthetic Membranes, Yufan He, Xiaohua Zeng, Saptarshi Mukherjee, Suneth Rajapaksha, Samuel Kaplan, H. Peter Lu

How light energy is harvested in a natural photosynthetic membrane through energy transfer is closely related to the stoichiometry and arrangement of light harvesting antenna proteins in the membrane. The specific photosynthetic architecture facilitates a rapid and efficient energy transfer among the light harvesting proteins (LH2 and LH1) and to the reaction center. Here we report the identification of linear aggregates of light harvesting proteins, LH2, in the photosynthetic membranes under ambient conditions by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and spectroscopic analysis. Our results suggest that the light harvesting protein, LH2, can exist as linear aggregates of 4 2 …

Urban University Access And Affordability: The Implications Of The Relationship Between Gas Prices And Suburban Transit Ridership, Jessie Baginski
Urban University Access And Affordability: The Implications Of The Relationship Between Gas Prices And Suburban Transit Ridership, Jessie Baginski
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Many college campuses across the country have implemented U-Pass transit programs to mitigate transportation costs for students. However, urban university U-pass programs fall short for suburban students who cannot get to the urban metro area without connecting public transportation. As urban universities rely on suburbs as feeder communities, this study looked at the relationship between suburban commuter ridership and the price of gas as an indicator of college affordability and accessibility. The findings revealed that ridership on suburban transit into an urban university area was significantly sensitive to the price of gas, thereby substantiating the need for partnerships to be …
Racial/Ethnic Socialization Messages, Social Support, And Personal Efficacy Among Adolescents, Francesca Pernice-Duca, Delila Owens
Racial/Ethnic Socialization Messages, Social Support, And Personal Efficacy Among Adolescents, Francesca Pernice-Duca, Delila Owens
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Associations between ethnic socialization and a sense of personal efficacy were explored among African- American, Hispanic, and Caucasian adolescents. We found that those who reported greater intimacy with their mothers were more likely to perceive them as sources of race-related socialization messages. Consisting of primarily African-American and Latino youths, members of this group were encouraged by their mothers to demonstrate greater racial and ethnic pride. In contrast, Caucasian youths were more likely to see their mothers as purveyors of tolerance and cooperation between diverse populations. A separate analysis involving the African-American subset revealed that adolescents who received messages imparting strong …

Single Mothers, Single Fathers: Gender Differences In Fertility After A Nonmarital Birth, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford
Single Mothers, Single Fathers: Gender Differences In Fertility After A Nonmarital Birth, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford
Sociology Faculty Publications
Research on nonmarital fertility has focused almost exclusively on unmarried mothers, due in part to a lack of fertility information for men. Cycle 6 of the National Survey of Family Growth allows exploration of nonmarital fertility for both genders. We compare the characteristics of unmarried first-time mothers (n = 2,455) and fathers (n = 797), use event history techniques to model second birth hazards, and examine the distribution of men’s and women’s second births across types of relationships. Our analysis is motivated by questions about how selection into nonmarital fertility relates to subsequent fertility behavior and by theories …

Understanding The Diminishing Academic Advantage Of Full-Day Kindergarten, Randall S. Davies, Susan Cress
Understanding The Diminishing Academic Advantage Of Full-Day Kindergarten, Randall S. Davies, Susan Cress
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Most people agree that young children benefit academically from attending kindergarten; however, some research suggests that any academic advantage attributed to attending full-day kindergarten compared to half-day programs will disappear as early as third grade. Based on the results of this study which looked at students in typical classroom settings, a likely explanation for this is that teachers often provide considerable remedial assistance to low achieving students. Once students meet benchmark expectations, instruction tends to broaden to other instructional objectives. We also found that in practice distinguishing between full- and half-day programs based solely on time in school is problematic. …
Single-Case Designs And Qualitative Methods: Applying A Mixed Methods Research Perspective, John H. Hitchcock, Bonnie K. Nastasi, Meredith Summerville
Single-Case Designs And Qualitative Methods: Applying A Mixed Methods Research Perspective, John H. Hitchcock, Bonnie K. Nastasi, Meredith Summerville
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The purpose of this conceptual paper is to describe a design that mixes single-case (sometimes referred to as single-subject) and qualitative methods, hereafter referred to as a single-case mixed methods design (SCD-MM). Minimal attention has been given to the topic of applying qualitative methods to SCD work in the literature. These two approaches potentially can be integrated using a mixed methods perspective to yield a powerful approach for understanding localized causality and describing intervention application. The SCD-MM also can be used within the context of action research if the purpose of such work is to investigate a causal question.
