Underwater Treadmill Exercise As A Potential Treatment For Adults With Osteoarthritis, William E. Denning, Eadric Bressel, Dennis G. Dolny

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study examined the acute effects of underwater and land treadmill exercise on oxygen consumption (VO2), perceived pain, and mobility. Nineteen participants diagnosed with osteoarthritis performed three consecutive exercise sessions for each mode of exercise. VO2 and perceived pain were recorded during each exercise session and Timed Up & Go (TUG) scores were measured before and after each intervention. VO2 values were not different between conditions during moderate intensities, but were 37% greater during low intensity exercise on land than in water (p = 0.001). Perceived pain and TUG scores were 140% and 240% greater, respectively, for land than underwater …

Determinants Of Bacterial Contamination In Pools, Spas, And Wading Pools: Should Chlorine Standards Be Revised?, Edmond A. Hooker, William A. Chinn, Natalie C. Bain, Gregory C. Busam, Anahatan Srirangan, Antonio R. Young

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Using a retrospective case-control study, we compared poolside tests with bacteriological samples during three consecutive summers. A total of 844 matched samples were obtained. Increased chlorine levels were associated with lower rates of contamination. Alkalinity, pH, and TDS were not statistically associated with bacteriological failures. In swimming pools with > 1 ppm of chlorine, 27/30 (90.0%) passed bacteriologic evaluation. In spas with < 1.0 ppm of chlorine, only 12/28 (42.9%) passed. Of the spas with > 3.0 ppm of chlorine, 170/176 (96.6%) passed. Of the wading pools with < 1ppm of chlorine, only 12/25 (48.0%) passed. Of the wading pools with > 2 ppm, 263/290 (90.7%) passed. Of available poolside tests, only chlorine levels are predictive of positive testing for fecal contamination. Higher levels of chlorine were associated with …

Thirty-nine adult participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: aquatic group 1 (APT1), aquatic group 2 (APT2), land group (LPT1), and control group (CON). All groups performed a 6-week plyometric training program. The APT1 and LPT performed the same volume of training where, APT2 doubled the volume. All participants were pre- and post-tested on performance variables. A 4 (group) X 2 (time) …

Correlation Of Pool Drowning Deaths With Number Of Residential Swimming Pools By County In Florida, 2005-2007, Michael Lo, Kristal Hall, Lisa Vanderwerf-Hourigan, Bob Vincent, Robert Pryor Feb 2010

Correlation Of Pool Drowning Deaths With Number Of Residential Swimming Pools By County In Florida, 2005-2007, Michael Lo, Kristal Hall, Lisa Vanderwerf-Hourigan, Bob Vincent, Robert Pryor

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Drowning in residential swimming pools is a significant public health problem in Florida. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the number of pools and pool drowning deaths by county in Florida. County property appraisers’ offices were surveyed to obtain a statewide census of appraised residential pools. The number of pool drowning deaths was obtained from death certificate records. Approximately 1.1 million residential pools were appraised in 2006, and 262 unintentional, confirmed pool drowning deaths occurred from 2005 through 2007. Statistical modeling showed that for every 10,000 residential pools that a county has, 2.4 additional pool drowning deaths can …

Muscular Activity Of The Posterior Deltoid During Swimming Vs. Resistance Exercises On Water And Dry Land, Xavier Garcia-Masso, Juan Carlos Colado Feb 2010

Muscular Activity Of The Posterior Deltoid During Swimming Vs. Resistance Exercises On Water And Dry Land, Xavier Garcia-Masso, Juan Carlos Colado

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to compare muscular activity of the posterior deltoid muscle during three typical aquatic physical conditioning activities. This interpretative case study involved a 23 year old elite swimmer and athlete. Muscular activity was measured with surface electromyography during swimming crawl at maximum speed, and also while performing horizontal shoulder abduction using elastic band and Hydro-Tone Bells resistance. During the maximum voluntary contraction, we observed what appeared to be meaningful differences between the percentage of muscular activation during the swimming activity and that observed during the elastic band and aquatic resistance exercises (18.72% vs. 74.84% and …

Pesach N. Rubenstein Cheats The Hangman: A Case Study Of Punishment And The Death Penalty At Brooklyn’S Raymond Street Jail, Philip M. Stinson Jan 2010

Pesach N. Rubenstein Cheats The Hangman: A Case Study Of Punishment And The Death Penalty At Brooklyn’S Raymond Street Jail, Philip M. Stinson

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This paper tells the story of Pesach Rubenstein and how he cheated the hangman in 1876. Rubenstein was charged, tried, and convicted in Kings County, New York, for the 1875 murder of his 19 year-old cousin, Sarah Alexander. The Rubenstein case is noteworthy in that it received unprecedented media attention in the 1870s, involved the use of rudimentary forensic evidence at the trial, and divided the community on issues of religion, ethnicity, immigration (the victim and defendant were recent Jewish immigrants from Poland), and imposition of the death penalty. Using a case study approach to analyze the trial transcript, newspaper …

Tale Of Two Afghanistans: Comparative Governance And Insurgency In The North And South, Neil A. Englehart Jan 2010

Tale Of Two Afghanistans: Comparative Governance And Insurgency In The North And South, Neil A. Englehart

Political Science Faculty Publications

Afghanistan is often depicted as a failing state, but its failures display distinctive patterns over time and space. Regional variations in governance have been important in shaping the ways the Afghan state has failed and the consequences of these failures. This article argues that a history of better governance in the north facilitated the disarmament of militia warlords and comparative stability. By contrast, the south has a long history of minimal formal governance, creating opportunities for increased Taliban insurgency.

Implications Of A Behavioral Weight Loss Program For Obese, Sedentary Women: A Focus On Mood Enhancement And Exercise Enjoyment, Bonnie G. Berger, Lynn A. Darby, David R. Owen, Robert Albert Carels Jan 2010

Implications Of A Behavioral Weight Loss Program For Obese, Sedentary Women: A Focus On Mood Enhancement And Exercise Enjoyment, Bonnie G. Berger, Lynn A. Darby, David R. Owen, Robert Albert Carels

Psychology Faculty Publications

The benefits of a 6-month behavioral weight loss program were investigated by examining mood changes after a graded exercise test (GXT), changes in exercise enjoyment, and the relation of mood and enjoyment to program success. Obese, sedentary, postmenopausal women completed a demographic questionnaire, and physical and psychological measures. Women who completed the program (n = 25) significantly decreased their body weight and body mass index and reported significantly less tension and confusion post-GXT when measured both at the beginning and end of the program. Although their exercise enjoyment increased, their exercise-related mood changes appeared to be independent of enjoyment. Finally, …
