The Complexities Of De-Constructing The Constraints To African American Female Participation In Swimming: A Rejoinder To Irwin Et Al., Steven N. Waller, Dawn M. Norwood Nov 2009

The Complexities Of De-Constructing The Constraints To African American Female Participation In Swimming: A Rejoinder To Irwin Et Al., Steven N. Waller, Dawn M. Norwood

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This rejoinder to Irwin et al. is written to address several concerns regarding “Myth #4: Personal Appearance Limitations” in their recent article. Constraints to leisure are complex and become more complicated when race, culture, family socialization, and hair are combined. Despite the data-driven evidence which they argue refutes “Myth 4” there are several practical concerns that are raised toward better understanding the responses of African American females in the study. We posit that a heightened understanding of the interaction between culture, race, and gender in the case of African American females is vital to the interpretation of the data associated …

Drowning In Ancient Greek History And Mythology, Stathis Avramidis Nov 2009

Drowning In Ancient Greek History And Mythology, Stathis Avramidis

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this article was to describe the prevalence of drowning as a cause of death in the mythology and ancient Greek history and under what circumstances it occurred. From all the names and references (n= 40,000) recorded in a database of the ancient and mythological Greek literature (Devouros, 2007), the number of drowning incidents was identified (n=37), 17 males (45.94%), 6 females (16.22%), and 14 reports of multiple casualties (37.84%). The review of the database confirmed that drowning was attributed to “acts of demigod” but was more often due to human accidental submersion or to “acts of God” …

Aquatics For Individuals With Disabilities: Research Implications, Susan J. Grosse Nov 2009

Aquatics For Individuals With Disabilities: Research Implications, Susan J. Grosse

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In any field, it is appropriate to periodically reflect on what practice has been substantiated by research in the field, as well as what implications that research may have for future endeavors. This research review of the field of aquatics for individuals with disabilities discusses problems with definition of the field and narrows this definition for more detailed consideration. Using a database spanning over half a century and containing over 900 items classified as related to adapted aquatics, the quality, content, and substance of research in adapted aquatics are considered for reflection. Finally, recommendations are made for future research directions …

Perceived Effects Of Menopause Among Women Master Swimmers, Michael Ussher, Chloe Mount, Sarah Greenberg, Christine Goodair, Janette Perz Nov 2009

Perceived Effects Of Menopause Among Women Master Swimmers, Michael Ussher, Chloe Mount, Sarah Greenberg, Christine Goodair, Janette Perz

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study assessed female master swimmers’ perceptions of the influence of menopause on their swimming. Using a cross-sectional design, 183 women completed an internet-based survey. Measures related to menopause status, physical activity levels, perceived effect of menopause on swimming and attitudes to swimming and menopause. Perimenopausal women reported the least physical activity and the greatest reduction in intensity of swimming training due to menopause, relative to other menopause groups. A quarter of women reported that the intensity of their swimming had reduced due to menopause. Additionally, a quarter reported that menopausal symptoms, particularly weight gain and sleeplessness, negatively affected their …

Evaluation And Comparison Of 300-Yd And 500-Yd Shallow Water Run Tests As Predictors Of Aerobic Power, Oliver Bellevue, Rebecca Cisar, Craig Cisar, J. Bowen, Susan Wilkinson Nov 2009

Evaluation And Comparison Of 300-Yd And 500-Yd Shallow Water Run Tests As Predictors Of Aerobic Power, Oliver Bellevue, Rebecca Cisar, Craig Cisar, J. Bowen, Susan Wilkinson

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purposes of the study were to assess and compare the validity of both 300-yd and 500-yd shallow water run (SWR) tests to predict peak aerobic power (VO2peak). Subjects included 18 women and 18 men who performed a graded exercise treadmill test to predict VO2peak and then performed a 300-yd and 500-yd SWR for time. In addition to SWR times, other independent variables included age, gender, body weight, height, leg length, percent body fat, and 300-yd and 500-yd SWR heart rate and rating of perceived exertion. Correlation coefficients with measured VO2peak were r = -.84 and -.87 for the 300-yd …

Maximum And Resting Heart Rate In Treadmill And Deep-Water Running In Male International Volleyball Players, Antonio Cuesta-Vargas, Jeronimo Carmelo Garcia-Romero, Raija Kuisma Nov 2009

Maximum And Resting Heart Rate In Treadmill And Deep-Water Running In Male International Volleyball Players, Antonio Cuesta-Vargas, Jeronimo Carmelo Garcia-Romero, Raija Kuisma

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of the study was to compare the physiological responses to deep water running (DWR) compared with treadmill running (TMR) in male international volleyball players. We compared the maximum, recovery and resting heart rates, maximum blood lactate and ratings of perceived exertion between DWR and standard laboratory TMR test. The maximum heart rate (HRmax) was 14.9 bpm lower in water than on land (p = 0.001, 95% confidence interval, 7.74-22.06). The recovery HR at three minutes was 16.4 bpm lower in water (p = 0.012, CI 95%, 4.57-28.23). The differences in the maximum HR and the three-minute recovery HR …

Under What Circumstances Do People Drown? Encoding The Fourth Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn Nov 2009

Under What Circumstances Do People Drown? Encoding The Fourth Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of the current study was to identify under what circumstances people drown using the 4W model (Avramidis, Butterly, Llewellyn, 2007). We used qualitative content analysis to analyze drowning incident videos (n = 41), and semi-structured interviews of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34). Results confirmed that drowning incidents can occur at any time, although most likely during daylight, and during any season of the year, with summer most common. We observed that drowning can occur after engaging in just about any form of human activity, on, near, above or under the surface of a liquid (mainly …
