Buildings consume tremendous energy for the improvement of living and working conditions. Control of daylight-artificial light has the potential to improve energy performance and occupant comfort in buildings. This research proposes an intelligent generalized ensemble learning technique to develop a novel control strategy for Venetian-blind positioning (up-down movement with static slat angle of 45°) of different window orientations. The proposed model helps to maintain occupant comfort and energy saving in a commercial building. The performance of the ensemble learning approach compared against Gaussian process regression, support vector regression and artificial neural network using conventional statistical indicators. Finally, the proposed data-driven …

Human-wildlife conflict arising from livestock-losses to large carnivores is an important challenge faced by conservation. Theory of prey-predator interactions suggests that revival of wild prey populations can reduce predator's dependence on livestock in multiple-use landscapes. We explore whether 10-years of conservation efforts to revive wild prey could reduce snow leopard's Panthera uncia consumption of livestock in the coupled human-And-natural Trans-Himalayan ecosystem of northern India. Starting in 2001, concerted conservation efforts at one site (intervention) attempted recovery of wild-prey populations by creating livestock-free reserves, accompanied with other incentives (e.g. insurance, vigilant herding). Another site, 50km away, was monitored as status quo …

Living mindfully helps one gain a deeper understanding into realities of life. It enables people to witness suffering, desire, attachments, and impermanence without any fear, anxiety, anger, or despair. This is considered the hallmark of true psychological insight. As a skill, mindfulness can be inculcated by anyone. Mindfulness helps in attending, getting aware and understanding experiences in a compassion and open-minded way. Research suggests that applying mindfulness in daily life has been known to tame our emotional mind and enabled people to perceive things 'as they are' without ascribing expectations, judgments, cynicism, or apprehensions to them. This review unravels the …

The Western Ghats is a contentious landscape described in the familiar language of disciplines and boundaries, a language that has influenced the way in which development and environmental projects have been designed. It is possible the contentions arise from a particular ontology, created by a way of seeing the Ghats that divides nature from culture, relying on a view from above that distances one from place, an outsider’s view. This way of seeing differs from an understanding that emerges when engaging in the Ghats on foot. This paper grapples with this difference through a literary engagement with one of Kuvempu’s …
