Open Access archive

Objective: The main aim was to assess the efficiency of the Mitotic Activity Index (MAI) and a novel index devised by us, the Pattern-Corrected Mitotic Activity Index (PMAI) in prognostication of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma in terms of lymph node involvement, margin, recurrence and survival status. Material and Method: The study group consisted of 60 cases of histologically-proven Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma with known status of prognostic indicators. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of the tumor proper were utilized for assessment of mitotic activity and pattern of invasion. The Mitotic Activity Index and Pattern-Corrected Mitotic Activity Index were then calculated …

Background: Delays in initiating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) treatment adds risk to individual patients and the community due to disease progression, and on-going transmission. The Government of India offers free TB diagnosis and treatment, however many presumptive MDR TB patients wander within the Indian healthcare system and delay accessing the programme. To better improve access to care, it is imperative to understand the treatment pathways taken by MDR TB patients. We aimed to describe the diagnostic and treatment pathway taken by presumptive MDR TB patients registered in the Programmatic Management Drug-resistant TB Program (PMDT). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study …

Background Exposure to smoking in films causes smoking uptake among adolescents. Investigation of the extent to which tobacco imagery appears, or tobacco control laws are complied with in Indian films is limited, and especially so for films in regional languages. This study presents an analysis of tobacco content and compliance with tobacco control laws in popular films in several languages from the Karnataka state of India. Methods We used 5 min interval coding to measure actual tobacco use, implied tobacco use, tobacco paraphernalia and tobacco branding in the top 10 films identified from national box office ratings and regional distributor …

The Ideology Of Critical Regionalism As A Teaching And Design Resource For The Next 100 Years Of Cela, David Hopman Jan 2020

The Ideology Of Critical Regionalism As A Teaching And Design Resource For The Next 100 Years Of Cela, David Hopman

Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications - Archive

This addresses the future viability of Critical Regionalism as an ongoing ideology and aesthetic construct. Regionalist trends in the early 20th century, around the time that CELA was founded, and the theory of Critical Regionalism as originally proposed in early 1980s are explained and proposed as flexible ongoing frameworks for teaching and design. Tracing the evolution and persistence of the ideas of regionalists breeds confidence for projecting the evolution of their principles forward to students of landscape architecture and to clients as adaptable verities worthy of perpetual renewal.

‘To Awaken The Medical And Hygienic Conscience Of The People’: Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship Through Free Public Healthcare In Haiti From 1915–34, Elliott M. Reichardt Jan 2020

‘To Awaken The Medical And Hygienic Conscience Of The People’: Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship Through Free Public Healthcare In Haiti From 1915–34, Elliott M. Reichardt

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

This paper addresses the relative scholarly oversight of the history of public health in Haiti through a close examination of the colonial public health system constructed and operated by the United States (US) during its occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. More than simply documenting a neglected aspect of Caribbean history, the paper offers the US occupation of Haiti as a remarkably clear example of a failed attempt to use a free public health service to cultivate a health conscientiousness among the Haitian citizenry through the aggressive treatment of highly visible ailments such as cataracts and yaws. I argue …

"The Men's Group" At St. Pius V: A Case Study Of A Parish-Based Voluntary Partner Abuse Intervention Program, Maxine Davis, Melissa Jonson-Reid, Charles Dahm, Bruno Fernandez, Charles Stoops, Bushra Sabri

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

Literature on Latino men and intervention for intimate partner violence/abuse (IPV/A) is slim. Over 100 men have voluntarily sought help for IPV/A perpetration from “The Men’s Group” (TMG) at St. Pius V parish in Chicago, IL (US) and remained engaged for extended periods. Given the rarity of prolonged non-court mandated engagement in batterer intervention programs (BIPs), a case study was conducted to explore how TMG functions. Drawing on multiple data sources, this study examined development and implementation of TMG, while also investigating contextual factors, motivators and facilitators of participants’ involvement. Data revealed that TMG functions within a supportive community context …

A New Species Of Heligmosomoides (Nematoda: Heligmosomidae) In Peromyscus Maniculatus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) From Canada With Notes On The Phylogenetic Appraisal Of Heligmosomoides In North America, Haitham Alnaqeb, F. Agustín Jiménez, Kurt J. Vandegrift

Data Sets

A new species of Heligmosomoides Hall, 1916 is proposed for nematodes collected from Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner) in western Canada. The diagnostic trait for this species is the presence of 2 ventral bulbs on the bursal membrane. Only 3 species, Heligmosomoides bullosus, Heligmosomoides vandegrifti, and Heligmosomoides douglasi, are characterized as possessing a bursal membrane. However, the bursal membrane of the specimens herein described feature 2 parts that resemble calluses or bobbles, whereas there is only 1 in Heligmosomoides vandegrifti, Heligmosomoides bullosus, and Heligmosomoides douglasi. Further, the new species can be differentiated by the size of spicules 759–892 μm, which …

A surge in the commercial sector especially in the Tier-1 cities has been identified across the country. Due to the demand for an increase in the commercial spaces, there is a scope for increased investments in these sectors. The study presented in this paper tries to focus on maximizing the selling price of properties in commercial sectors by suggesting the thinnest possible optimized external wall that eventually results in increased carpet area of the building. The wall combinations to be optimized will be compliant to the Energy Conservation Building Code, 2017 of India, with respect to the thermal transmittance (u-value). …

Traumatic Ulcerative Granuloma With Stromal Eosinophilia (Tugse)-A Precursor Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma?, Mathangi Kumar, Ravindranath Vineetha, Keerthilatha M. Pai, Abhay T. Kamath

Traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia (TUGSE) is a benign, chronic, reactive and self-healing lesion. It is composed of abundant eosinophils and small lymphocytes. Several studies have shown varying observations on the relation of tissue eosinophilia with the prognosis of oral cancer. Here, we present a case of a 65-year-old male who presented with a non-healing ulcer on the lateral border of the tongue, which was suggestive of TUGSE on histopathological examination. The patient was kept on strict monthly follow up and the second re-biopsy was suggestive of moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Literature does not support the transformation of …
