Michigan COVID-19 Syndromic Surveillance System Data
The Syndromic Surveillance System Data report was obtained from Michigan's COVID-19 dashboard, from under the link "Coronavirus Symptoms": https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus. Data was compiled by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The information was updated daily.
Syndromic Surveillance System data is obtained from approximately 183 facilities participating in syndromic surveillance (132 Emergency Departments (ED), 51 Urgent Cares) across the State of Michigan. The reporting is based on individuals who present at EDs and may not be representative of the overall population. The coronavirus-like symptoms query searches visit free-text (chief complaint, triage notes, and clinical impression) for fever or …

Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce
Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce
Computer Science Summer Fellows
Sonification is the process of deriving an audio representation of a time series which conveys important information about that time series. Otology and vision science have established that humans process audio information more quickly than visual information, and sonification can convey data to the visually impaired. In our work, we implement pipelines using Python/Numpy, and we handle both ordinary 1D time series and multivariate time series. For 1D time series, we find that using data to modulate the pitch or timing of preselected sounds (such as sine waves) simply and effectively captures repeating patterns and anomalies/outliers within the data. To …

Dataset For Methods To Model Antecedent Effects On Soil Respiration In A Cold Desert Ecosystem, David P. Huber, Ken A. Aho, Gerald Flerchinger, Kathleen A. Lohse, Mark S. Seyfried
Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data
Soil carbon is the largest terrestrial carbon (C) store but remains a large source of uncertainty in C storage models due to high temporal and spatial variability, and a lack of process understanding. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes are especially difficult in desert ecosystems exhibiting pulses of biogeochemical cycling regulated by antecedent soil conditions. Using the soil CO2 gradient method and measures of soil physical and hydrologic properties, we present a soil respiration model for a cold desert climate and which incorporates antecedent controls on CO2 emissions using Bayesian methods. Soil properties and CO2 measurements between October 2016-2018 were taken from …

English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows
My goal with this project has been to deepen my understanding of why people play games, how to make games narratively compelling, and what technical methods are effective in play. This has allowed me to investigate both the technical, scholarly assessments of board game dynamics while also exploring their real-world applications, successes, and weaknesses. Building on my research, my project has culminated in a full prototype of an original board game that has both narrative structure and an engaging gameplay structure. I have also produced a reflection paper on the experience and an annotated bibliography of my research texts and …

Design Of Electrolarynx To Increase Energy Efficiency By Varying The Driving Source, Madhushankara Maila, Somashekara Bhat, Keerthana Prasad

The larynx is an organ in the human respiratory system that forms the basis of the speech production system. An electrolarynx is a device used by most laryngectomees to regain their verbal communication. Our objective was to design an electrolarynx with increased energy efficiency by modifying the driving source. Initially, we designed the electrolarynx to accommodate various driving signals. We then compared the voice output obtained by different input signals for quality and measured energy consumption using a digital multimeter. When compared to existing methods, the proposed driving source was found to be 11.1% more energy efficient. Voice quality was …

Id Proteins Promote A Cancer Stem Cell Phenotype In Mouse Models Of Triple Negative Breast Cancer Via Negative Regulation Of Robo1, Wee S. Teo, Holly Holliday, Nitheesh Karthikeyan, Aurélie S. Cazet

Breast cancers display phenotypic and functional heterogeneity and several lines of evidence support the existence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in certain breast cancers, a minor population of cells capable of tumor initiation and metastatic dissemination. Identifying factors that regulate the CSC phenotype is therefore important for developing strategies to treat metastatic disease. The Inhibitor of Differentiation Protein 1 (Id1) and its closely related family member Inhibitor of Differentiation 3 (Id3) (collectively termed Id) are expressed by a diversity of stem cells and are required for metastatic dissemination in experimental models of breast cancer. In this study, we show that …

Using Simulation To Enhance Environmental Cleaning Practices In Diverse Healthcare Settings, Alaina Herrington, Michelle Parr, Meg Ziminsky
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Inadequate cleaning and disinfection practices in the healthcare setting create an environment in which infectious pathogens can linger for days or even weeks on high-touch surfaces, presenting an increased risk of infection transmission to healthcare workers and patients. The World Health Organization recently cited environmental cleanliness as a key element for infection control across all healthcare settings. Yet researchers have found that less than half of all surfaces in United States healthcare settings are adequately cleaned. In the three study settings, administrators have recently documented significant incidences of non-compliant environmental cleaning behaviors of healthcare workers, related patient complaints, and the …
