The purpose of this study was to determine whether coqui frogs from their non-native range responded to native predators the same way as frogs from their native range. Frogs were collected from two sites in Puerto Rico (El Yunque and Rio Abajo) in May 2006 and one site in Hawaii (Hilo) in June 2006. At each site, frogs were collected from a high (> 700 m) and low (< 300 m) elevation population. Of the total number of frogs collected, 100 males were randomly selected to be used in this study (45 and 55 from Hawaii and Puerto Rico, respectively). Three tailless whipscorpions (Phrynus longipes) and three tarantulas (Avicularia laeta) were also collected in Puerto Rico in field sites where frogs were collected and shipped back to a laboratory.

Endophytic fungi are important in diverse plant functions but knowledge of the factors that shape assemblages of these symbionts is lacking. Here, using a culture-dependent approach, we report 4,178 endophytic fungal isolates representing 16 orders isolated from stems, roots and leaves of three cruciferous plant species, Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and white cabbage (B. olerocea L.), collected from 21 focal fields with different landscape contexts and pesticide uses during four seasons (summer, autumn, winter and spring). The colonization rate of fungi was found to be most strongly affected by season, plant identity and plant tissue. …

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
Castles in the Air is a retelling of Dracula that uses elements of the original Stoker text while also diverging from the story and exploring victim narratives and queer subtext. The project explores the limitations and possibilities of transformative texts, such as, essentially, fanfiction.

C-IMAGE data
This dataset contains DNA barcoding results of fish eggs collected along the northwestern coast of Cuba and across the Florida Straits from 2017-05-13 to 2017-05-25 using bongo plankton nets. The dataset also includes cruise data from twenty-three different stations collected during R/V Weatherbird II cruise WB1731. Individual eggs were DNA barcoded to identify species of fish spawning in the area. This dataset supports the publication: Kerr, M., Browning, J., Bønnelycke, E.M., Zhang, Y., Hu, C., Armenteros, M., Murawski, S., Peebles, E. and Breitbart, M. (2020). Denying The Will Of The Armenian People: Populism, Democratic Backsliding And Polarization, Nerses Kopalyan
Denying The Will Of The Armenian People: Populism, Democratic Backsliding And Polarization, Nerses Kopalyan
Political Science Faculty Research
Opponents and critics of Armenia’s post-Velvet Revolution political establishment have relied on three main arguments in their attempts to question the legitimacy and broad mandate of the Pashinyan Administration. The first argument is hinged on the populism narrative, the second argument promotes the “democratic backsliding” narrative, and the third argument advances the polarization narrative. The underlying presupposition of these arguments not only question the will and character of the Armenian people, but also suggests a condescending and dismissive attitude towards Armenian political society. Collectively, these arguments assume that the Armenian electorate is composed of a naive, ill-informed citizenry that was …

This study employs a commercial multifilament cotton thread as a low-cost microbial identification assay integrated with smartphone-based imaging for high throughput and rapid detection of pathogens. The thread device with inter-twined fibers was drop-cast with test media and a pH indicator. The target pathogens scavenge the media components with different sugars and release acidic by-products, which in turn act as markers for pH-based color change. The developed thread-based proof-of-concept was demonstrated for the visual color detection (red to yellow) of Candida albicans (≈16 hours) and Escherichia coli (≈5 hours). Besides that, using a smart-phone to capture images of the thread-based …

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data
The overarching goal of this study is to better understand the relationship between plant carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotopic signatures and climate in a sagebrush-steppe ecosystem. Additionally, this study seeks to a) determine how plant isotopic data in the sampled ecosystem compare with global patterns with respect to broader climate gradients; and b) evaluate any additional effects on plant isotopic compositions due to soil attributes (chemical, physical). Climatic effects on C and N isotopes were analyzed by examining plant and soil samples across a climatic gradient within the Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory (RCCZO) (comprised of the USDA ARS …

Derangements in bilirubin metabolism and/or dysfunctions in the hepato-biliary system lead to the unhealthy buildup of bilirubin in blood, resulting in jaundice. During the course of this disorder, circulating red cells are invariably subjected to toxic effects of serum bilirubin and an array of inflammatory compounds. This study aimed to investigate the vibrational spectroscopy of live red cells in jaundice using micro-Raman spectroscopy combined with optical-trap. Red cells from blood samples of healthy volunteers and patients with jaundice were optically immobilized and micro-Raman probed using a 785 nm diode laser. Raman signatures from red cells in jaundice exhibited significant variations …
