Numerous studies conducted in the past have reported deaths in the human population due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) on exposure to air particulate matter (APM). BP-1,6-quinone (BP-1,6-Q) is one of the significant components of APM. However, the mechanism(s) by which it can exert its toxicity in endothelial cells is not yet completely understood. NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1) is expressed highly in myocardium and vasculature tissues of the heart and plays a vital role in maintaining vascular homeostasis. This study, demonstrated that BP-1,6-Q diminishes NQO1 enzyme activity in a dose-dependent manner in human EA.hy926 endothelial cells. The decrease in the NQO1 …

Handel’S Messiah: Stepping Stones Between Now And Then, Ariela Policastro, Emma Boze, Nathan Maras
2020 Festschrift: Georg Frideric Handel's "Messiah"
Original style and intent of period music can often be lost as modern performers attempt to recreate a centuries-old composition. In this paper Messiah by George Frideric Handel is discussed, offering insight in how to perform this piece while still honoring the full integrity of what the composer intended. Through an examination of past and current performances and opinions, it becomes clear that there are many distinct differences in ways this oratorio has been performed including stylistic choices, instrumentation, religious affiliation, and more.

Peroxiredoxin (Prx) refers to a family of thiol-dependent peroxidases that decompose hydrogen peroxide, lipid hydroperoxides, as well as peroxynitrite, and protect against oxidative and inflammatory stress. There are six mammalian Prx isozymes (Prx1-6), classified as typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys, or 1-Cys Prxs based on the mechanism and the number of cysteine residues involved during catalysis. In addition to their well-established peroxide-scavenging activity, some Prxs also participate in the regulation of various cell signaling pathways. Extensive animal studies employing primarily gene knockout models provide substantial evidence supporting a critical protective role of Prxs in various disease processes involving oxidative and inflammatory …

Decidualization involves the proliferation and differentiation of fibroblast-like endometrial stromal cells into epithelioid-shaped and secretory ‘decidual’ cells in response to steroid hormones. Human decidual cells produce insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-1 and prolactin (PRL), two well-recognized markers of decidual cell maturation and a proteoglycan decorin (DCN). We reported that DCN restrains the human trophoblast renewal, migration, invasion and endovascular differentiation needed for uterine arterial remodeling during normal pregnancy. DCN overproduction by the decidua is associated with a hypo-invasive placenta and a serious pregnancy disorder, pre-eclampsia (PE). Furthermore, elevated maternal plasma DCN levels during the second trimester is a predictive biomarker of …

College of Health, Science, and Technology
We have calculated molecular geometries, HOMO-LUMO gaps, Fermi levels and vibrational frequencies for the ?-linear, ?-bent and ?-coordinated [Au20-C60-Au20]n? (n = 0–3) complexes using the density functional B3LYP method and LANL2DZ basis sets. Our calculations showed that the ?-bent ?1(b)-[Au20-C60-Au20]3? complex is the global minimum structure with Au-C distances of 2.27 and 2.97 Å, respectively. The C60 calculated bouncing frequencies for the [Au20-C60-Au20]n? (n = 0–3) complexes appear at 18–60 cm?1 and compare well with the experimental value of 40 cm?1. The calculations of Mulliken charges indicate that the electrostatic interaction of the C60n? ions with the Au20 clusters plays …

Molecular tests for tuberculosis (TB) have the potential to help reach the three million people with TB who are undiagnosed or not reported each year and to improve the quality of care TB patients receive by providing accurate, quick results, including rapid drug-susceptibility testing. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the use of molecular nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) tests for TB detection instead of smear microscopy, as they are able to detect TB more accurately, particularly in patients with paucibacillary disease and in people living with HIV. Importantly, some of these WHO-endorsed tests can detect mycobacterial gene mutations …

In this paper the phenomenon of inverse response from systems was investigated and its transient response thoroughly analyzed. Inverse response is shown by non-minimum phase systems and some minimum phase systems. Transient analysis of these systems is lacking in literature A case study was done for a non-linear, non-minimum phase CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor), which was identified. Different control schemes were also implemented on other systems as well, which exibhit inverse responses, including model reference adaptive control. The finding shows that PID goes with the inverse response, is unable to suppress it and requires large control effort which can …

Histone proteins regulate cellular factors’ accessibility to DNA, and histone dosage has previously been linked with DNA damage susceptibility and efficiency of DNA repair pathways. Surplus histones are known to impede the DNA repair process by interfering with the homologous recombination-mediated DNA repair in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we discuss the recent finding of association of methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) resistance with the reduced histone H4 gene dosage in the pathogenic yeast Candida glabrata. We have earlier shown that while the low histone H3 gene dosage led to MMS susceptibility, the lack of two H4-encoding ORFs, CgHHF1 and CgHHF2, led to resistance …
