Due to the ongoing environmental changes, degradation of directly exposed material is seen very often. This results in issues related to aesthetics, function, and most importantly, the safety of the structures. Reinforced cement concrete (RCC) is the most commonly used material for construction where steel bars are used as reinforcement. Steel reinforcement in contact with the chemicals like chlorides and sulphates etc. which are very commonly present in urban and industrial areas and other aggressive environment, gets corroded, thus affecting the structural behaviour. Research studies propose replacing steel rebars with Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars due to its non-corrosive …

Design Of Flexural Members Reinforced With Gfrp Bars, Abinash Kumar Sethi, Trupti A. Kinjawadekar, Praveen Nagarajan, A. P. Shashikala

Reinforced concrete has emerged as a primary construction material since the nineteenth century. A passive combination of concrete and steel reinforcing bar (rebar), this composite material is widely used in various types of structures. However, corrosion of steel reinforcement has been identified as a significant problem affecting the structural integrity of such concrete structures. In this context, the use of GFRP bars is gaining prominence due to their non-corrosive nature. This paper presents behaviour of flexural members reinforced with GFRP bars. The strength reduction factors and guidelines available with different codes for flexural members are studied. The design of flexural …

Emerging Functions Of Actins And Actin Binding Proteins In Trypanosomatids, Chhitar M. Gupta, Bindu Ambaru, Rani Bajaj

Open Access archive

Actin is the major protein constituent of the cytoskeleton that performs wide range of cellular functions. It exists in monomeric and filamentous forms, dynamics of which is regulated by a large repertoire of actin binding proteins. However, not much was known about existence of these proteins in trypanosomatids, till the genome sequence data of three important organisms of this class, viz. Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania major, became available. Here, we have reviewed most of the findings reported to date on the intracellular distribution, structure and functions of these proteins and based on them, we have hypothesized some of …

Differential Yield Of Universal Versus Selective Drug Susceptibility Testing Of Patients With Tuberculosis In High-Burden Countries: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Anita Svadzian, Giorgia Sulis, Genevieve Gore, Madhukar Pai

Open Access archive

Introduction Although universal drug susceptibility testing (DST) is a component of the End-TB Strategy, over 70% of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) cases globally remain undetected. This detection gap reflects difficulties in DST scale-up and substantial heterogeneity in policies and implemented practices. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess whether implementation of universal DST yields increased DR-TB detection compared with only selectively testing high-risk groups. Methods PubMed, Embase, Global Health, Cochrane Library and Web of Science Core Collection were searched for publications reporting on the differential yield of universal versus selective DST implementation on the proportion of DR-TB, from January …

3d-Printed Face Mask Instructions, George D. Lecakes

Datasets

As the COVID-19 pandemic increased demand for PPE in early 2020, Rowan University faculty and students responded to a hospital’s request for help by designing a reusable face mask that could be produced by anyone with a 3D printer. The project met immediate needs with hundreds of masks printed by volunteers. By late spring, the success of the project led to a collaboration to refine the design and professionally produce thousands.

Rowan engineering and medical students developed a prototype for a durable, lightweight, reusable face mask. Further refined after feedback from users around the world, the designs shared here are …

Background: A dispensing error can be defined as an inconsistency between the drug prescribed and drug dispensed to a patient. These errors can lead to ineffective and sometimes unwanted pharmaceutical outcomes. Dispensing errors can be harmful or even fatal to patients. Case presentation: The objective to this study was (a) to determine the types and frequency of dispensing errors at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), (b) to explore the reasons for the occurrence of dispensing errors, and (c) to make suitable recommendations for their prevention. An observational study for a period of 2 weeks was carried out at …

C-IMAGE data

Reef fish community structure and species diversity were examined by estimating reef fish densities (per 1,000m^3) using VideoRay Pro 4 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) video sampling. 22 individual natural reef sites were surveyed in the period 2012-03-13 to 2014-08-25. The density of 117 different species was measured over the period. Related data may be found under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifiers (UDIs): R1.x135.120:0020 (DOI: 10.7266/N7J38QKR, artificial reef sites) and Y1.x049.000:0003 (DOI: 10.7266/N72J68SF, natural reef sites 2010-2011).

Vibrio Pathogenicity Island-1: The Master Determinant Of Cholera Pathogenesis, Ashok Kumar, Bhabatosh Das, Niraj Kumar

Open Access archive

Cholera is an acute secretory diarrhoeal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The key determinants of cholera pathogenicity, cholera toxin (CT), and toxin co-regulated pilus (TCP) are part of the genome of two horizontally acquired Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs), CTXΦ, and Vibrio pathogenicity island 1 (VPI-1), respectively. Besides, V. cholerae genome harbors several others MGEs that provide antimicrobial resistance, metabolic functions, and other fitness traits. VPI-1, one of the most well characterized genomic island (GI), deserved a special attention, because (i) it encodes many of the virulence factors that facilitate development of cholera (ii) it is essential for the …

Microtubule cytoskeleton exists in various biochemical forms in different cells due to tubulin posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Tubulin PTMs are known to affect microtubule stability, dynamics, and interaction with MAPs and motors in a specific manner, widely known as tubulin code hypothesis. At present, there exists no tool that can specifically mark tubulin PTMs in living cells, thus severely limiting our understanding of their dynamics and cellular functions. Using a yeast display library, we identified a binder against terminal tyrosine of α-tubulin, a unique PTM site. Extensive characterization validates the robustness and nonperturbing nature of our binder as tyrosination sensor, a …
