Introduction: A constant update of antibiotic sensitivity of pathogens of the area, country, or institution helps in interventions that would improve the prescribing pattern and rational use of drugs in children. This study aimed to assess prescribing trends for urinary tract infection (UTI), a common distressful pediatric infection in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, and record-based analysis including pediatric patients aged <18 years of either gender diagnosed with UTI. The case record files retrieved from medical records department based on the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) disease coding were analyzed for demographics, and details of drugs including dose and route of administration, frequency, and duration of treatment with antimicrobial used and other concurrent drugs were recorded. Results: Of 42 patients included in the study, 14 (33.3%) were males and 28 (66.67%) were females. Third-generation cephalosporins were the most commonly used antibiotics (71.4%) followed by aminoglycosides (35.7%), amoxicillin clavulanate (11.9%), fluoroquinolones (7.1%), and miscellaneous (doxycycline, metronidazole, and nitrofurantoin) (9.5%). Ceftriaxone among the cephalosporins and amikacin among the aminoglycosides were the most commonly used drugs. Intravenous route was the most commonly used route of administration followed by patients who received by both intravenous and oral routes. The average duration of therapy was 4.43 ± 1.9 days. Conclusion: This study concludes that third-generation cephalosporin is used as first-line drugs irrespective of the causative agent for UTI which should ideally be reserved for complicated UTIs. Moreover, existing guidelines also indicate that the duration of antimicrobial therapy should be seven to 14 days. These results highlight the necessity for a remedial education program within the health care system designed to improve pharmacotherapy of UTI.

Amalgam in dentistry has been in use for over 150 years and still been widely used because of its low cost, easy application, durability, bacteriostatic effect, and strength. Whenever aesthetics isn’t the prime concern it is possibly used with no age bar, in areas of stress, as a foundation for cast-metals, ceramic restorations, and below-par oral hygiene conditions. Its advantages such as long-lasting and being less technique sensitive among all restorative materials, there has been growing concern about amalgam that it causes mercury toxicity. Mercury (Hg) has been historically popular as one of the extremely toxic nonradioactive materials. Therefore, the …

Early childhood caries (ECC) has been considered to be at epidemic proportions in developing countries. There is a scientific consensus regarding the benefit of a constant supply of low levels of fluoride, especially at the biofilm/saliva/ tooth interface in preventing dental caries. The use of controlled and sustained delivery systems containing fluoride can be considered as an effective means of eradicating ECC in high-risk individuals. The use of chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial agent in combination with fluoride is beneficial (Naidu et al., 2016). Slow-releasing devices containing both fluoride and chlorhexidine do not exist as of now. Hence, the aim of …

Over the past two decades, polymersomes have been widely investigated for the delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic agents in cancer therapy. Polymersomes are stable polymeric vesicles, which are prepared using amphiphilic block polymers of different molecular weights. The use of high molecular weight amphiphilic copolymers allows for possible manipulation of membrane characteristics, which in turn enhances the efficiency of drug delivery. Polymersomes are more stable in comparison with liposomes and show less toxicity in vivo. Furthermore, their ability to encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs, significant biocompatibility, robustness, high colloidal stability, and simple methods for ligands conjugation make polymersomes a …

Advanced Modeling And Design Methodology For Pavements Using Plasticity-Based Shakedown Theory, Shengli Chen, Chao Sun, Xu Wang, Zhiming Zhang
Data
Pavement design is a process intended to find the most economical combination of layer thickness and material type for the pavement, taking into account the properties of the subgrade soil and the traffic to be carried during the service life of the road. The currently prevalent methods of pavement analysis and design, however, are more or less empirical in U.S., which possess the shortcoming that the important type of pavement distress of rutting related to the accumulation of plastic or permanent deformations cannot be effectively considered. This project proposes an exploratory study on the application of the plasticity theory-based shakedown …

Eco-Friendly Stabilization Of Sulfate-Rich Expansive Soils Using Geopolymers For Transportation Infrastructure, Xinbao Yu, Anand Puppala, Miladin Radovic, Sayantan Chakraborty, Jungyeon Jang, Oscar Huang
Data
Traditional calcium-based stabilizers, such as lime, to stabilize sulfate-rich expansive soils, are lasting-challenges in geotechnical engineering. The biggest problem with using calcium-based stabilizers is that when calcium and water are exposed to sulfate-rich expansive soils, they form ettringite as an expansive mineral, which causes sulfate-induced heaving. The study aimed to investigate the feasibility of stabilizing sulfate-rich expansive soils using geopolymers for transportation infrastructure. Literature review on sulfate-induced heaving and sulfate-rich soils stabilized with geopolymers suggests a direction for how to stabilize sulfate soils using geopolymers. The engineering tests were conducted to determine the swell, shrinkage, and strength behavior of natural, …

The short revisit times afforded by recently-deployed optical satellite sensors that acquire 3–30 m resolution imagery provide new opportunities to study seasonal vegetation dynamics. Previous studies demonstrated a successful retrieval of phenology with Sentinel-2 for relatively stable annual growing seasons. In semi-arid East Africa however, vegetation responds rapidly to a concentration of rainfall over short periods and consequently is subject to strong interannual variability. Obtaining a sufficient density of cloud-free acquisitions to accurately describe these short vegetation cycles is therefore challenging. The objective of this study is to evaluate if data from two satellite constellations, i.e., PlanetScope (3 m resolution) …
