Cewaf-Exposed Florida Pompano Fish F1 Generation: Spawn And Hatch, Dana Wetzel Dec 2020

Cewaf-Exposed Florida Pompano Fish F1 Generation: Spawn And Hatch, Dana Wetzel

C-IMAGE data

This project was undertaken to evaluate the viability, fertility, hatch success and larval survival of Florida Pompano fish upon exposure to chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction (CEWAF) of south Louisiana crude oil and Corexit 9500. At least one parent of the adult fish were similarly exposed to CEWAF of south Louisiana crude oil and Corexit 9500. Hence, this generation of fish were exposed to CEWAF in tanks for a specified period of time and evaluated in terms of total viable eggs, percentage of eggs that were fertilized, the percentage of fertilized eggs that hatched and the percentage of survival.

From Teacher To Teacher-Leader: A Phenomenographic Study Of Transition, Jennifer Santi

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

As Education evolves, the roles within traditional teaching and learning also evolve. School structures change and leadership roles within those structures change as well, creating and recreating the educational experience for students and practitioners alike. As these structures change the nature of education, the roles found within them also transform what it means to be a professional educator. Increases in teacher-leadership positions have led to more instructional coaching roles for teachers and it is necessary to understand how those roles are perceived by those that are now changing the nature of their chosen work. As teachers leave the classroom to …

Prenatal Diagnosis (PND) forms an important part of primary preventive management for families having a child affected with primary immunodeficiency. Although individually sparse, collectively this group of genetic disorders represents a significant burden of disease. This paper discusses the prenatal services available for affected families at various centers across the country and the challenges and ethical considerations associated with genetic counseling. Mutation detection in the index case and analysis of chorionic villous sampling or amniocentesis remain the preferred procedures for PND and phenotypic analysis of cordocentesis sample is reserved for families with well-characterized index case seeking PND in the latter …

Sirt6 Deacetylase: A Potential Key Regulator In The Prevention Of Obesity, Diabetes And Neurodegenerative Disease, Swapnil Raj, Liston Augustine Dsouza, Shailendra Pratap Singh, Abhinav Kanwal

Sirtuins, NAD + dependent proteins belonging to class III histone deacetylases, are involved in regulating numerous cellular processes including cellular stress, insulin resistance, inflammation, mitochondrial biogenesis, chromatin silencing, cell cycle regulation, transcription, and apoptosis. Of the seven mammalian sirtuins present in humans, Sirt6 is an essential nuclear sirtuin. Until recently, Sirt6 was thought to regulate chromatin silencing, but new research indicates its role in aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, lipid metabolism, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Various murine models demonstrate that Sirt6 activation is beneficial in alleviating many disease conditions and increasing lifespan, showing that Sirt6 is a critical therapeutic target in …

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected every sector across every corner of the world. The higher education sector is not immune from the pandemic and is facing significant learning and teaching challenges. The existing literature databases on COVID-19 are focused on the medical elements of the pandemic. This manuscript documents the method for the creation of the first version of the COVID-19 in Higher Education Literature Database (CHELD). Our aspiration is to provide an open access resource to support future learning and teaching scholars to gain timely access to pre-examined literature on higher education during COVID-19. This first version …

The Structure And Low-Barrier Methyl Torsion Of 3-Fluorotoluene, K. P.Rajappan Nair, Sven Herbers, Ha Vinh Lam Nguyen, Jens Uwe Grabow

Open Access archive

The rotational spectra of 3-fluorotoluene and its seven 13C isotopic species have been recorded at natural abundance in the frequency range from 4 to 26 GHz using a pulsed molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The molecular structure comprising bond lengths and angles as well as parameters describing the methyl torsion were determined with high accuracy. Due to the very low torsional barrier of 17 cm−1, the lowest torsional states of the vibrational ground state exhibited large splittings in the spectrum, which were modeled satisfactorily with a modified version of the program XIAM and the program aixPAM, both developed to …

Mechanics, Energetics And Implementation Of Grounded Running Technique: A Narrative Review, Sheeba Davis, Aaron Fox, Jason Bonacci, Fiddy Davis

Open Access archive

Grounded running predominantly differs from traditional aerial running by having alternating single and double stance with no flight phase. Approximately, 16% of runners in an open marathon and 33% of recreational runners in a 5 km running event adopted a grounded running technique. Grounded running typically occurs at a speed range of 2-3 m·s-1, is characterised by a larger duty factor, reduced vertical leg stiffness, lower vertical oscillation of the centre of mass (COM) and greater impact attenuation than aerial running. Grounded running typically induces an acute increase in metabolic cost, likely due to the larger duty factor. The increased …

The Fear Of Reptiles And How To Change It, Maxwell Lyman Dec 2020

The Fear Of Reptiles And How To Change It, Maxwell Lyman

Honors Projects

Reptile fear is prominent across many cultures. Anti-reptilian attitudes can lead to anti-conservation attitudes towards reptiles. Person-animal interaction has been shown to decrease fear desensitization and increase positive attitudes towards "unpopular" animals. My project demonstrates the effectiveness of live animal presentation in dispelling negative attitudes of reptiles. However, due to the sample size of the project, further research is highly suggested.

Impacts Of High Pressure On Hydrocarbon Biodegradation, Xiaoxu Sun

C-IMAGE data

Sediment samples collected from the northern Gulf of Mexico were used for incubations in which microbial respiration rates were measured as a proxy for biodegradation of hydrocarbons. Following the incubation, microbial communities were characterized from incubation samples using next generation sequencing of SSU rRNA genes. A systematic approach was used whereby pressure, temperature, and hydrocarbon substrate were varied.

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data

Non-perennial streams comprise over half of the global stream network and impact downstream water quality. Stream drying occurs when groundwater is the primary flow source, but the dynamic relationship between spatiotemporal stream drying patterns, shallow groundwater inputs, and topographic controls remains poorly characterized and understood. We measured stream drying patterns at 15-minute intervals at 25 locations in Murphy Creek, part of the larger Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory in southwest Idaho, from June 3 to October 1, 2019. In addition we collected continuous 15-minute, water level and specific conductivity data that was used to estimate discharge and groundwater flux. Discharge …

This research is focused on the thermal mixing region of parallel jets entering an upper plenum. The highly-coupled thermal-fluid physics are relevant to plenum-to-plenum flow in High Temperature Gas Reactors such as thermal striping phenomena. Experimentally measured boundary conditions and system response quantities for use in Computational Fluid Dynamics were tabulated and published for public use.
