Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) syndrome is a group of inborn errors of immunity characterized by a defect in the cascade of the activation and adhesion leading to the failure of leukocyte to migrate to the site of tissue injury. Three different types of LAD have been described. The most common subtype is LAD type 1 (LAD1) caused due to defects in the ITGβ2 gene. LAD type 2 (LAD2) is caused by mutations in the SLC35C1 gene leading to a generalized loss of expression of fucosylated glycans on the cell surface and LAD type 3 (LAD3) is caused by mutations in …

The novel coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 has spread to several countries within a considerably short period. The virus gets deposited in the human nasal cavity and moves to the lungs that might be fatal. As per safety guidelines by the World Health Organization (WHO), social distancing has emerged as one of the major factors to avoid the spread of infection. However, different guidelines are being followed across the countries with regards to what should be the safe distance. Thus, the current work is an attempt to understand the virus deposition pattern in the realistic human nasal cavity and also to …

Xbeach-G Model Simulation Of 2.5-M Sea-Level Rise On Sand And Gravel Coral Reef Island (Masselink Et Al., Jgr(Es), 2021), Gerd Masselink Dec 2020

Xbeach-G Model Simulation Of 2.5-M Sea-Level Rise On Sand And Gravel Coral Reef Island (Masselink Et Al., Jgr(Es), 2021), Gerd Masselink

Faculty of Science and Engineering Datasets

Coral reef islands are particularly exposed to the impacts of sea-level rise. They are usually fronted by ‘living’coral reef platforms that protect the island shoreline from energetic wave action. Healthy reef platforms grow vertically and can keep up with rising sea level, maintaining a constant water depth in front of the island. It is therefore suggested that future reef growth may be a critical factor in reducing the vulnerability of coral reef islands to sea-level rise. We use a computer model to simulate the response of coral reef islands to sea-level rise with and without future reef growth. We find …

Introduction The development of type 2 diabetes mellitus disproportionately affects South Asian women with prior gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The Lifestyle InterVention IN Gestational diabetes (LIVING) Study is a randomised controlled trial of a low-intensity lifestyle modification programme tailored to women with previous GDM, in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, aimed at preventing diabetes/pre-diabetes. The aim of this process evaluation is to understand what worked, and why, during the LIVING intervention implementation, and to provide additional data that will assist in the interpretation of the LIVING Study results. The findings will also inform future scale-up efforts if the intervention is …

Improving Entrepreneurial Competencies In The Classroom: An Extension And In-Study Replication, Caroline E.W. Glackin, Steven E. Phelan

College of Business and Economics

Purpose: A recent paper by Morris et al. (2013b) presented evidence that students can develop entrepreneurial competencies through international fieldwork. This paper explores whether the same results can be developed in a traditional classroom setting. Design/methodology/approach: The study is a systematic replication of the Morris study with the addition of a matched pair, quasi-experimental design, with a self-replication. Data were collected on 13 self-reported competencies at the start of a semester from two groups using the Morris instrument. The treatment group was exposed to a curriculum designed to teach entrepreneurial competencies, and both groups were re-surveyed at the end of …

Effects Of Agricultural Intensification Practices On Smallholder Farmers’ Livelihood Outcomes In Kenyan Hotspots Of Climate Change, F. O. Ouya, O. I. Ayuya, M. I. Kariuki

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Developing countries, Kenya included are mostly affected by food shortage and poverty as a result of high dependence on agriculture constrained by climate variability, declining land sizes and low agricultural technologies. Agricultural intensification is key in solving these problems to ensure increased farm output per unit land area. This study analyzed the role of agricultural intensification on smallholders’ poverty and food security status. The study is based on data collected from a sample of 320 smallholder households from two Sub-counties of Kenya, Makueni and Nyando. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was first used to group agricultural intensification practices into clusters. The …

Meta Analysis Of Rct Interventions, Ayo Ellis Dec 2020

Meta Analysis Of Rct Interventions, Ayo Ellis

Master's Theses

External validity of an RCT intervention enables understanding of where interventions are successful.

Meta-analysis allows for more generalized statements to be made on the effectiveness of RCTs across countries of different geographic and national income profiles. By comparing the findings from similar studies carried out in different settings I seek to describe whether RCTs in certain sectors are more sensitive to high GDP growth or higher levels of GDP. I consider 402 health, education, and industry development RCT studies done between 1980 and 2015 in 201 countries compiled by development non-profit Aidgrade. I find no significant effect of income level …

In the proposed paper, a microstrip patch antenna is studied with single band features for usage in applications within the low satellite frequency. Suggested Antenna involves a rectangular radiation patch and ground plane of antenna is abridged at its corners. The antenna impedance bandwidth ranges after 7.22 to 9.03GHz range. The recommended antenna is of close size 36mm × 34mm × 1.6mm. VSWR < 2 for entire carrying out frequency spectrum range is achieved along with good antenna efficiency.

The design of a microstrip patch antenna of rectangular shape has been presented in this article. Its operation has been demonstrated at low frequencies of resonance. The designed antenna is compact with resonant frequencies of 1.96 (Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)), 3.08 and 3.82GHz (Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)). The antenna resonates at a-10dB impedance bandwidth, uses a FR4 Epoxy as substrate which has a dielectric constant of 4.4. The transmission lines used for the excitation of the rectangular patch have a specifically designed length and breadth. The gain, radiation pattern and S-Parameters are obtained as results via simulation …

Insulin Autoimmune Syndrome: A Rare Cause Of Spontaneous Hypoglycaemia In Non-Diabetic Individuals, Shruthi Ravindra, Sahana Shetty

Open Access archive

Insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) is a rare cause of hypoglycaemia, characterised by recurrent hypoglycaemic episodes secondary to insulin autoantibodies in individuals who are not exposed to exogenous insulin. We are reporting a case of IAS in a 64-year-old gentleman, who presented with predominant postprandial hypoglycaemic episodes. On biochemical evaluation, he was found to have hyperinsulinemic hypoglycaemia. Localisation studies with MRI abdomen and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) were negative for pancreatic tumour. Tests sent for insulin antibody levels were elevated. The patient was treated with frequent meals, acarbose and glucocorticoids. Patient condition improved and did not experience hypoglycaemia on follow-up.

Characterizations Of Bimetallic Silver-Copper Nanoparticles, Omar Lezcano Dec 2020

Characterizations Of Bimetallic Silver-Copper Nanoparticles, Omar Lezcano

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The goal of this study was to characterize alloy nanoparticles with different bimetallic ratios of silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) by determining the composition and alloy structures. One specific objective was to determine how the composition affects the electrical properties of the nanoparticles in terms of electrical resistance and nanoparticle sintering. The desire for this study stems from the need to make conductive pastes for low-cost solar panel manufacturing. We performed experiments to develop the aqueous synthesis of core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles.

We investigated the room temperature sintering properties with the nanoparticles of varying compositions. The nanoparticles were characterized with several …
