Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)
© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Photocatalysts based on copper-doped bismuth oxybromide (Cu-doped BiOBr) were synthesised using a solvothermal method and assessed for their ability to degrade norfloxacin under visible light. The Cu atoms were successfully doped into the crystal lattice of BiOBr, yielding Cu-doped BiOBr microflowers with a morphology and crystal structure identical to that of pristine BiOBr. The as-prepared Cu-doped BiOBr showed activity superior to BiOBr in the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin under visible-light irradiation, which was attributed to its improved light-harvesting properties, enhanced charge separation and interfacial charge transfer. Furthermore, we found for the first time that the introduction …

Paediatrics Publications
Background: Children spend substantial time in childcare, and the reasons parents choose a particular childcare type may differ by family. However, little is known about how childcare type influences habitual (full day) activity levels among children. Therefore, exploring patterns between childcare type and habitual physical activity (PA) (i.e., light, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and total PA) and sedentary time (ST) in young Canadian children is needed. Methods: A nationally representative sample of preschoolers from Cycles 3 and 4 of the Canadian Health Measures Survey was used in this cross-sectional study. Childcare type (e.g., center-based childcare, home-based childcare, home with parent, kindergarten) …

Performance is a critical non-functional parameter for real-time systems and performance analysis is an important task making it more challenging for complex real-time systems. Mostly performance analysis is performed after the system development but an early stage analysis and validation of performance using system models can improve the system quality. In this paper, we present an early stage automated performance evaluation methodology to analyse system performance using the UML sequence diagram model annotated with modeling and analysis of real-time and embedded systems (MARTE) profile. MARTE offers a performance domain sub-profile that is used for representing real-time system properties essential for …

Iron is an essential element for Mycobacterium tuberculosis; it has at least 40 enzymes that require iron as a cofactor. Accessibility of iron at the phagosomal surface inside macrophage is crucial for survival and virulence of M. tuberculosis. ESAT-6, a 6-kDasecreted protein of region of difference 1, is known to play a crucial role in virulence and pathogenesis of M. tuberculosis. In our earlier study, we demonstrated that ESAT-6 protein interacts with b-2-microglobulin (b2M) and affects class I Ag presentation through sequestration of b2M inside endoplasmic reticulum, which contributes toward inhibition of MHC class I:b2M:peptide complex formation. The 6 aa …

In this article, the capping action of Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) on ZnS nanoparticles synthesized by microwave-assisted method is reported. The X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction studies corroborated nanocrystalline nature of cubic ZnS. Discontinuous cluster growth of particles was implied by optical absorption studies. This was reflected in transmission electron microscope images. Fourier-transform infrared studies confirmed NaCMC capping on the surface of ZnS nanoparticles. Effective encapsulation of ZnS nanoparticles by NaCMC was further supported by Raman scattering, thermal studies and photoluminescence studies. Surface modification of ZnS nanoparticles with NaCMC appear to be suitable for specific biomedical applications due to the …

Elastomeric materials show promise as potential micro-fillers in brake linings. They can provide vibration damping and acoustic advantages in intermittent and abrupt impact applications such as braking. The elastomeric material can be salvaged from non-biodegradable automotive tires, thereby providing an opportunity to reuse materials that will otherwise be discarded in landfills. Both tribological and thermomechanical performances of the waste tire rubber were assessed to determine their potential for use as micro-fillers in the brake linings of commercial vehicles with a gross weight less than 16 tons. Accordingly, the brake lining materials were fabricated with fine waste tire rubber particulates (WTRPs) …

Foot ulcer is a common complication in diabetic subjects and infection of these wounds contributes to increased rates of morbidity and mortality. Diabetic foot infections are caused by a multitude of microbes and Staphylococcus aureus, a major nosocomial and community-associated pathogen, significantly contributes to wound infections as well. Staphylococcus aureus is also the primary pathogen commonly associated with diabetic foot osteomyelitis and can cause chronic and recurrent bone infections. The virulence capability of the pathogen and host immune factors can determine the occurrence and progression of S. aureus infection. Pathogen-related factors include complexity of bacterial structure and functional characteristics that …

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lung parenchymal disease of unknown cause usually occurring in older adults. It is a chronic and progressive condition with poor prognosis and diagnosis is largely clinical. Currently, there exist few biomarkers that can predict patient outcome or response to therapies. Together with lack of markers, the need for novel markers for the detection and monitoring of IPF, is paramount. We have performed label-free plasma proteomics of thirty six individuals, 17 of which had confirmed IPF. Proteomics data was analyzed by volcano plot, hierarchical clustering, Partial-least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and Ingenuity pathway analysis. Univariate …

In this research paper, a compact wideband monopole antenna of the dimensions 20×20×1.6mm3(i.e.totalvolume=640mm3) is presented. The proposed antenna configuration has simplified design in which the ground plane, as well as the radiating patch, are on the same plane. This design renders one side of the substrate consummately empty resulting in an overall design which is more facile to fabricate. It is excited by Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) feeding technique. The proposed structure has a fractional bandwidth of 40.56% (4.3–6.45 GHz) in simulation and 34.41% (4.4–6.38 GHz) in measurements for S11 < −10 dB criteria. It has linearly increasing gain over its entire operational bandwidth and has a maximum peak realized gain of 4.7 dB at 6.4 GHz in simulation and about 3.8 dBi at 6.3 GHz in measurement. The designed antenna is suitable for WLAN and WiMAX of the range corresponding to 4.70–6.19, 5.5–5.7 and 5–6 GHz. To overcome the major drawback of narrow bandwidth in printed patch antenna, the uniquely designed split patch technique is used to achieve wide bandwidth. The antenna time-domain analysis is detailed by keeping it in side-to-side and face-to-face orientations. This analysis resulted in a stable performance which is very much required from a wideband antenna. All the necessary antenna simulations are done using HFSS and are validated by fabricating a model of it.

Cell survival is one of the many cellular processes regulated by Notch family of proteins. A comparison of human breast cancer cell lines, which differ in the levels of endogenous Notch4, implicated the protein in regulating susceptibility to apoptosis triggered by genomic damage. In agreement with this observation, increased susceptibility to genotoxic damage was observed following siRNA ablations of Notch4 in two breast cancer cell lines. Further, overexpressing Notch4 intracellular domain (NIC4) tagged to GFP (NIC4-GFP), protected cells from apoptosis triggered by genotoxic drugs. In cells immune-stained for endogenous Notch4, protein was detected in the nucleolus and nucleoplasm, which was …
