Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem

The bulk of the critical study of Gustavo Bècquer's leyendas has dealt with the thematics, stylistics, or the folkloric motifs and origins of the individual works. Surprisingly little attention has been given to the structure or the narrative techniques used in the leyendas as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine these structural and narrative aspects from a folkloric perspective in order to better appreciate Bècquer's blending of popular and literary art forms.

In order to promote voluntary integration in two high schools and a middle school, the Fort Worth Independent School District in Texas developed a magnet program that offers specialized curricula: engineering at the all black Dunbar High School, finance at the predominantly black Polytechnic High School, and communications at Dunbar Middle School. This report presents evaluation results for the first two years of the program (1981-82 and 1982-83). The evaluation investigated program admission criteria, changes in school racial composition, participant characteristics, student achievement, program curricula, and attitudes of teachers, students, and parents toward the program. Cutaneous Responses Of Cattle To Extracts From Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus Larvae, M. G. Binta, M. P. Cunningham

A component of an extract from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus larval ticks induced an immediate hypersensitivity reaction in sensitized cattle when intra-dermally inoculated. Generally, the magnitude of the cutaneous reaction depended upon the duration of exposure of the cattle to tick infestation. The skin reaction was absent in steers not previously fed on by ticks. Field trials, using the extract in the Narok District of Kenya (Masailand), showed that the skin swelling thus induced was biggest in adult cattle and those over 9 months, moderate in the 6-month age-group and barely palpable in the less-than-1-month age-group. © 1984.

Even though the significance of Brown v. Board of Education is recognized by almost everyone, implementing the decision has been a very difficult task. Implementation of the resulting desegregation order in Dallas has been influenced by the national response to desegregation as well as by local conditions and responses. The purpose of this study is to analyze those factors which influenced implementation. A history of the fight for public school desegregation up to, and including, the Brown decision, is given as background and to help understand why implementation was so difficult. This work applies the insights of textlinguistics to the study of normative or persuasive discourse. Although textlinguistics is already somewhat interdisciplinary in character, it was found to be too narrow to account for normative discourse, and had to be expanded to include further considerations of cultural phenomena, norms, and the relations of these to the theory of knowledge structures. The challenge for the project was to site a student centre at the heart of the UTA campus without impeding upon one of its few green open spaces. This is achieved by creating a profile that folds the land into the sky to a height that responds to the adjacent buildings. This study reconstructs Proto East Mindanao, the ancestor language from which the East Mindanao languages have developed. This is accomplished by tracing the development from the ancestor language through the intermediate proto languages, Proto North East Mindanao, Proto Central East Mindanao, and Proto South East Mindanao, to the attested daughter languages. This study also presents over 1400 reconstructed vocabulary items. The term East Mindanao used in this study refers to three groups of languages spoken on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines (in addition to Tausug, which is spoken on the island of Jolo). This study represents an attempt to place linguistic analysis in the cultural setting. The linguistic aspect of this study is presented in the framework of discourse grammar following the model developed by Longacre (1976, 1983). Three Gujarati folktales are analyzed for their overall discourse structure, for their verb and sentence structure and relative importance of information in narrative discourse, and for the participant reference. A distinction is made between participant oriented narrative and event oriented narrative. This paper explores the feasibility of applying a standard job description to the chief of the marketing department of the firm. This implies that the traditional job description theory may not be adequate for describing the job of the marketing manager or conversely, that marketing theory is not applied to job description. This paper discusses some aspects of job descriptions, the task of the marketing manager and then looks at the five actual job descriptions of marketing managers in five major companies in different industries. A study has been made of the vegetational condition of a formerly grazed area, Chesler Park, in Canyonlands National Park. A comparison was made with the same area 10 years earlier. The 10-year successional changes are also compared to baseline data of 10 years earlier from Virginia Park, an adjacent ungrazed area. Because of inaccessibility and long isolation from disturbances, Virginia Park is presumed to be in climax condition and is the control for this study. Chesler Park shows a successional trend after 10 years toward the vegetational condition of Virginia Park. This is exemplified, with only one major exception …

Researchers generally have viewed nonmarket regulation of firm behavior as synonymous with direct regulation by the government. This paper highlights industry self-regulation as an alternative form of nonmarket regulation that, depending on the context, may supplement or complement direct regulation by the government. Further, on the basis of exploratory economic, organizational, and political analysis, it advances, for possible future research, propositions relating to the existence, operation, and out-come of industry self-regulation.

Design work from the 1982 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Housing. Randol Byrd and Kevin Crumpler. The Arlington housing project is an urban model which creates lyrical form by subtracting volumes of space from an overall sloping roof plane. It is making "hollow in bump." The diagonal line creates a basic order of form in this multi-unit project. Subtle folds of the sloping roof, together with the bending of walls, create a natural, meandering rhythmic order. Stepped windows intersect stepped solid areas below the windows, to form a yin-yang relationship.

Tip-Recording From Ixodid Tick Olfactory Sensilla: Responses To Tick Related Odours, S. M. Waladde

The tip-recording technique was used to obtain electrophysiological responses from the tarsal olfactory sensilla, md3 and apl, in ixodid ticks, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum. Stimuli tested were phenolic compounds, 2,6-dichlorophenol, P-cresol, phenol and salicylaldehyde, reported to act as sex pheromone of various ixodid ticks. Certain cells responded to vapours from cartridges charged with as little as 0.04ng of 2,6-dichlorophenol while at least 200 μg of any of the other compounds was required to exert the minimum effect. Response patterns of cells in sexually immature and mature males were similar but response levels were higher among sexually immature males. Vapours …

Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vector Biomphalaria glabrata Say and in Helix aspersa Müller as well as in Lymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper. © 1982 Birkhäuser Verlag.

Dispermic Origin And Clinical Outcome Of Three Complete Hydatidiform Moles With 46,Xy Karyotype, U. Surti, A. E. Szulman, S. O'Brien

Three new cases of complete, classic hydatidiform mole with a 46,XY karyotype are described. They originated by dispermy as demonstrated by chromosome and enzyme analyses. Levels of human chorionic gonadotropin decreased to normal spontaneously within a short time, indicating a benign course in these three cases. Of a total of 18 cases reported to date, postoperative clinical information was available for 10 patients. Two of these 10 patients had a malignant course with lung metastases. It is of theoretical and clinical importance to establish the magnitude of the risk of malignancy for hydatidiform mole with a 46,XY karyotype. © 1982.
