Trail-Following In Termites: Evidence For A Multicomponent System, M. Kaib, O. Bruinsma, R. H. Leuthold

Several African termite species from different subfamilies and different habitats are sensitive to trail-active extracts or to naturally laid trails from other species. Using single-extract bioassays, it is shown that the response threshold for trail-following is nearly identical for all tested species (except for Hodotermes mossambicus). However, when termite workers have a choice between trails from their own species and from other species, conspecific trail-following is exclusively observed. This phenomenon can be counteracted by dilution (1:10) of the conspecific trail-pheromone extract. Tests of the trail activity of various synthetic alcohols show that among these, the highest sensitivity of termite workers …

A study has been made of the vegetational condition of two graben valleys in Canyonlands National Park. The sites, formerly subjected to relatively heavy grazing pressure, were originally investigated in 1970 and analyzed again in 1981, providing an eleven-year record of succession. Comparisons are made to successional trends noted in related studies of disturbed and pristine areas. The graben valleys, with few exceptions, show a successional trend over eleven years toward the climax vegetational condition of an area that has never been disturbed.

The relation of some physical and chemical soil characteristics to cryptogamic crust development was determined from sites in semidesert regions of southern Utah. The effects of grazing on cryptogamic crust development also was examined. Electrical conductivity, percentage silt, and soil phosphorus were found to be correlated with well-developed cryptogamic crusts. Both total cryptogamic cover and the number of cryptogamic species decreased under grazing pressure. The management of rangelands, especially in arid regions, would be strengthened by understanding the role of cryptogamic crusts and considering them in range management decisions.

Influence Of The Termite Macrotermes Michaelseni (Sjöst) On Soil Fertility And Vegetation In A Semi-Arid Savannah Ecosystem, M. A. Arshad

The growth and species structure of vegetation in relation to the proximity of termite (M. michaelseni) mounds was studied in a semi-arid savannah ecosystem during 1978-1980. The dry matter yield in the termite-modified area at 1-10 m distance from mounds was significantly greater (P < 0.01) than that in the area beyond 22 m which is relatively unaffected by the termites. Themeda triandra and Digitaria scalarum, dominant grass species of the area, were totally absent in the 1-10 m zone around the mound. The major species in the immediate vicinity of the mound were Pennisetum stramineum and Cynodon dactylon, the latter was a dominant species (over 90%) within the 0-10 m zone and entirely absent beyond 15 m from the mound. The number of grass species increased from 2-3 species around the mound to 6-7 species in the area apparently beyond the influence of the mound. High concentration of nutrients and favourable water availability, together with good drainage, appeared to be the major causes of increased biomass and different species composition of vegetation around the mound. © 1982.

The isolation and structure determination of two new furanosesquiterpenoids, 2-O-acetyl-8,12-epoxygermacra-1(10),4,7,11-tetraene and 2-O-methyl-8,12-epoxygermacra-1(10)-4,7,11-tetraene, from gum exudates of Commiphora myrrh are reported. These two compounds, together with the known furanodienone isolated from C. erythraea, were found to have ixodicidal activity against Rhipicephalus appendiculatus tick larvae. © 1982.

Variations in density of adults of Anopheles merus Dön. in Jimbo Village on the Kenya Coast were found to be correlated both with rainfall and with salinity at their breeding sites. Densities started to increase at the beginning of the rains when several breeding sites were formed. This was followed by a decline in numbers resulting mainly from the decrease in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites. A second rise occurred after the end of the rains, corresponding with an increase in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites due to evaporation. Precocene treatment does not disrupt the events of reproduction in Glossina morsitans morsitans or induce any apparent changes in treated tsetse. However, some females of the F1 generation are either sterile or show retardations in follicle development. Sterility is not reversed spontaneously or with juvenile hormone analogues. The critical period for precocene action is related to each ovulation. The corpora allata of precocene-treated tsetse are normal, but those of F1 sterile females are degenerate. The occurrence of retardation has enabled the characterisation of stages in follicle development in G. m. morsitans. © 1982.

In interdisciplinary studies, the question arises of how best to mesh interrelated disciplines. Here, linguistics (in the complementary disciplines of discourse analysis and perspective) is inter-phased with New Testament scholarship at the literary juncture of the synoptic problem--a problem which is not a theological construct, but which is an anomaly inherent in the very gospel texts. Chapter 1 provides an overview and a short history of the synoptic problem, which is one of the most difficult problems in the history of ideas. The tachinid A. xylota is a common parasitoid of larvae of Trirhabda virgata and T. borealis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in central New York [USA]. Flies aggregated on herbaceous vegetation along the borders between old fields and more shaded habitats (shrubby fields or woodlots). Aggregations comprised from less than 100 to a few thousand individuals, almost all of which were male. Males continuously perched and moved about in sun flecks on the vegetation and frequently grappled with each other. Biometric studies and physiological investigations made it possible to propose a scheme of post-embryonic development and polymorphism in Macrotermes michaelseni. An instar hitherto undescribed has been found and designated fourth instar. This instar is comprised of female larvae which moult into major presoldiers. Minor presoldiers moult from some of the third instar female larvae which are morphologically identical to the female worker larvae. Three instars were detected in the case of both minor and major worker development. Workers and soldiers are sterile castes. Nymphs develop from first instar larvae and moult through five instars before imaginal moult. © 1981 Masson.

The sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata, under low population density conditions lays one egg per sorghum plant. Possible regulatory mechanisms of this oviposition behavior are reported. The presence of an egg thoroughly washed and reattached to a leaf does not deter further oviposition, indicating the absence of visual cues. When washings from eggs were sprayed on sorghum plants, or when plants from which eggs had been removed were presented to a gravid female, significant deterrence was observed. Apparently a deterrent pheromone is associated with the water-soluble glue with which the females attach their eggs to the leaves. Some deterrent effect persists …

Dallas County recently purchased a site in downtown which the City's Master Plan has earmarked for a new County Courthouse to be constructed in 1995. The site is located at the northern edge of an open urban space which contains John F Kennedy Memorial Plaza and John Neely Bryan County Park. Existing on the site and providing an integral edge to the open urban square is the Purse Building, a warehouse constructed in the Chicago Style in 1898. A dominant trend in linguistics has been sentence grammar, which deals with structures leading up to the sentence level. With more studies on semantics and pragmatics, however, there has been a growing concern for discourse grammar. Discourse, I believe, is the most natural unit of language that forms a meaningful whole. Two independently motivated linguistic models of text analysis (the cognitively-based model of Van Dijk and the literary-semantic approach of Beekman and Callow) are used to show that the First Epistle of John is actually hierarchical in its organization, and not merely associative as many Biblical scholars have assumed. The Van Dijk and Beekman-Callow models are also compared, contrasted and combined into a composite approach, which is then applied to the text of I John chapter one to take advantage of the pragmatic emphasis of Van Dijk and the practicality of the Beekman-Callow procedures.
