Computer Assisted Dialect Adaptation: The Tucanoan Experiment, Robert Bruce Reed

This dissertation provides the theoretical basis for a computer program that adapts textual material from one language of the Tucanoan family to another. Tucanoan languages are spoken by small groups living in southeastern Colombia, northwestern Brazil, northern Peru, and northern Ecuador. This work represents the first attempt to apply principles of machine translation and computational linguistics to indigenous languages of Colombia. It discusses aspects of translation theory relevant to machine translation. Some features of the Tucanoan languages relevant to the adaptation process are discussed in depth, including differences in suffix systems marking case, noun classifiers, and the evidential systems of …

A Town Square has existed in Waco since the city was established in 1850. The history of the square in Waco is similar to the development of other cities and open spaces in the nineteenth century American west. In attempting to create a Square for Waco certain issues are addressed concerning the application of appropriate urban forms to a site which has drastically changes in the last twenty years. Urban renewal razed many of the structures which defined the urban fabric. Newer structures were erected on the open site which had no relation to the historical and physical context of …

The Quichean languages are comprised of a family of related languages of the Mayan stock, spoken principally in the highlands of Guatemala in Central America. Some of the kinship terminologies currently in use by the speakers of these languages manifest a Hawaiian classification, while what seem to be vestiges of an Omaha system are also scattered throughout the area. In Tzeltal and Tzotzil, two languages of the Cholan family (also Mayan) spoken in Mexico, Omaha systems are currently in use. Models which describe promotions practice in various situations have tended to be widely accepted without much attempt at empirical validation. Many approaches rely on the popular dichotomy which separates ·consumer' and 'industrial' marketing. It is argued that this separation is not entirely justified as far as the promotional activities of advertising and selling are concerned, and that the traditional models do not adequately describe promotions strategy in South African companies. The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1986.

Binary Tree is a program that uses animation to illustrate insertion, deletion and searching of nodes in a binary search tree. Pre-order, in-order, and post-order tree walks are supported. Binary Tree can also perform a recursive descent parse of arithmetic expressions and show the resulting abstract syntax tree. This MFS formatted disk contains a collection of example programs written for teaching machine architecture concepts using the Macintosh Development System. Sample programs illustrate how instructions can be treated as data, computer arithmetic, looping features, interrupt handling, coroutines, recursive subprograms and stack frames, traps and direct manipulation of the screen. In addition, a supervisor program is provided that implements basic, line-oriented input and output facilities for the 68000 assembly language programs on the Macintosh.

The MacIP set consists of three disks, all single-sided, MFS formatted. Two disks contain the Lisa Pascal/Lisa Assembler sources for the network libraries and application programs; the third disk contains the runnable applications along with an AppleTalk configured system. The current version by Tim Maroney fixes all reported bugs mentioned in the MacIP Technical Report and includes the TCP library and Telnet program.

The effects of quinidine on steady state serum and tissue digoxin concentrations in the neonatal dog were studied. To determine the effects of quinidine on serum digoxin concentrations, two groups of neonates were evaluated: Group I (n = 11) was digitalized with 40 μg/kg body weight, intramuscularly, and placed on a 10 μg/kg per day maintenance dose; Group II (n = 7) was digitalized with 50 μg/kg per day, intraperitoneally, and placed on a 20 μg/kg per day maintenance dose. After 10 days of digoxin alone, quinidine was coadministered (30 mg/kg per day, intraperitoneally) for 7 days. Serum digoxin concentrations …

From Mezei To Jean: Toward The Exit Of The Entry Doctrine, Joseph M. Cooper

This Comment examines the issues of whether non-entrant aliens possess rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. The author reviews the legal developments surrounding the admission of aliens and analyzes the doctrinal underpinning of the governmental power to exclude aliens. The author then examines the delegation of discretionary power to the executive branch under the Immigration and Naturalization Act and argues that this delegation of power runs afoul of Constitutional limitations. The author examines the recent decision in Jean v. Nelson and analyzes how the court could have reached a more just result. The author concludes that the traditional …

Significant Developments In The Immigration Laws Of The United States 1983-1984, Margaret O'B. Scott
San Diego Law Review
This Synopsis outlines significant developments in immigration law from July 1983 through December 1984. The Supreme Court was very active in the area of immigration law during this period. In particular, the Court addressed important issues of asylum, suspension of deportation, and fourth amendment seizures. The lower courts focused on similar fundamental immigration issues that are of mounting concern in the United States. Failure to pass the Simpson-Mazzoli bill reflected congressional discord in the area of immigration reform.

The Effect Of Immobilization And Dietary Phosphorus On Bone Density Of Mature Female Rats, Kathleen Bauer, Paul Griminger

The right femurs of adult female rats were bound to their chests over a 14 week period. During this time rats were fed diets providing adequate calcium (Ca) and adequate (0.4%) or high (1.2%) phosphorus (P). Rats fed the high P diet tended to lose more weight during the experimental period than rats fed the adequate P diet. Both immobilization and a high P diet significantly reduced bone density. Thin cortical widths of rats fed the high P diet were apparently due to an increased medullary width rather than to a decreased subperiosteal width, while the reverse was true for …
