Data Sets

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1988.

Previous studies have suggested that the atrioventricular nodal functional refractory period in the neonate is equal to or shorter than that of the ventricle, providing little or no protection to the ventricle against rapid atrial rates and allowing closely coupled atrial beats to fall within the ventricular vulnerable period. We evalu­ated atrioventricular node function in 21 mongrel neonatal puppies, 3-15 days old, and 15 adult dogs utilizing intracardiac His bundle recording and stimulation techniques. The mean atrioventricular nodal functional refractory period (173.1 ± 20.0 ms) exceeded both the ventricular effective refractory period (139.5 ± 14.3) and ventricular functional refractory period …

The endeavor to understand another emic view of reality offers a conceptual challenge to any observer-analyst. This paper presents the author's reflections upon his encounter with another culture and language and his endeavor to understand the cognitive world view of the Wiru, a non-Austronesian language group in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The focus of the study is upon a divination rite during which a long pole, called yomo kopini, was ritually activated and through its subsequent "motions" retraced the steps of an assailant who had raped and murdered a young girl. The goal of this work is to discover information that will improve the selection and design of listening comprehension materials for adult second language learners. Chapter 1 treats adult versus child language learning and first versus second language learning, finding that: (1) due to the interdependence between neurological and linguistic development, adult language learning is inherently different from a child's acquisition of his primary language, nevertheless, (2) given fundamental properties common to all language use, processing strategies should be similar for first and second languages. Effects Of Hysteresis With Air Entrapment On Water Flow In The Unsaturated Zone, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker

Effects of hysteresis with air entrapment on water content and head distributions, surface fluxes, and water balance components are investigated by finite element simulations of flow in one- and two-dimensional spatial domains. Results of one-dimensional analyses indicate that effects of hysteresis are markedly influenced by surface boundary conditions and to a lesser extent by initial conditions. Stipulation of flux-controlled boundary conditions results in minimal hysteretic effects, while potential-type boundary conditions produce substantial deviations between hysteretic and nonhysteretic simulations. The latter effects are attributable in large part to differences in surface conductivity associated with air entrapment. Predicted water content distributions for …

Forms rise and fall in consonance with the swirling, rising and descending highway intersections of highway 360 and 183 in Arlington in scheme one. Sections appear to parallel the highway or radiate from a center point of a circle. Portions of a hill where highway 20 in Arlington separates, is radically removed in scheme two. A two-dimensional Galerkin finite element model for water flow in variably saturated soil is presented. A fourth-order Runge-Kutta time integration method is employed which allows use of time steps at least 2 times greater than for a traditional finite difference approximation of time derivatives. For short total simulation times computer execution costs for the Runge-Kutta method are greater than for the finite difference approximation due to the start up cost of the Runge-Kutta method, but for longer simulation times the Runge-Kutta method requires considerably less computational effort even when automatic time-step adjustment is used with the finite difference procedure. One of the three co-aligned gamma ray telescopes to be placed in orbit aboard the Gamma Ray Observatory is EGRET, the energetic gamma ray experiment telescope. EGRET will measure celestial gamma rays in the energy range 20 - 24,000 MeV. The telescope uses conversion foils and a spark chamber to resolve gamma ray direction and is triggered by a directionally sensitive pair of plastic scintillator arrays. An 8" thick N aI(TI) spectrometer below the spark chamber yields information about the gamma ray energy. The sensitive area is 20 times larger than previous instruments of its type. Virtually all criticism concerning Vidas Sêcas includes a discussion of its multiple point of view format and its use of free indirect style. It is generally agreed that the shifting points of view provide a multifaceted view of reality, and that the free indirect style technique is a verisimilar method of presenting the thoughts of the inarticulate protagonists, as well as being a means of combining third person objectivity with first person subjectivity. These observations, however, show a tendency to treat narrative voice and point of view as a single phenomenon, thereby blurring the distinction between the two. Yet the …

Different colour papers have been shown to attract the first and third instar larvae of Chilo partellus in different degrees. Green bice (No. 329) and light green (No. 323) elicited maximum larval attraction; followed by foliage green (No. 328) and cadmium yellow (No. 307). The green bice paper has been found to be much more effective than foliage green or cadmium yellow paper as a cylindrical sticky trap for the larvae. Even when competing with the host plant, sorghum, these colour paper traps proved more effective than the plants for attracting and trapping the larvae. © 1987, JAPANESE SOCIETY OF …

Deciding what should be done in the crop-production sector is a policy issue and a public and management responsibility. Entrusted with that responsibility, governments formulate policies which should ensure maximum crop productivity. The impact of policies and policy structures on crop productivity, and the role of policy makers, administrators and scientists in research and development systems are the subjects of this paper. Observations are made on the role played by government policies in the generation, diffusion and application of crop-production technology and a brief discussion is presented of issues of public and international policies and crop productivity. © 1987.

This paper analysed the concept of small-scale industries in Nigeria. After suggesting a modification to the extant definitions with a view to harmonising them, it appraised government small-scale industrial policy which is based on realising the conceptualised advantages of the small-scale paradigm. The analysis paid special attention to the funding of these enterprises. Whereas failure of the large-scale import-dependent assembly plants to propel the country into a satisfactory course of industrialisation necessitated the diversification of strategy to embrace the promotion of small-scale enterprises, achievement under the new strategy has not been commensurate with expectations in terms of the stated objectives …

This study attempts to specify how the syntactic form signals the semantic and pragmatic aspects of the focus system in the Isnag language. It specifies the correlation between the semantics and grammar of focus by proposing a ranking of the relevant semantic/participant roles called the Preferential Selection Hierarchy. This hierarchy constrains the positions the NP's can take in the clause and the co-occurrence of the NP's (i.e., which NP's may occur together in a clause). This paper describes the outcome of a study on rain infiltration into decoposed granite which is one of the two main types of soils found in Hong Kong. It consists of the development and verification of a finite element based numerical model which has general applicability for flow through unsaturated porous media, application of the model for predicting moisture movement in an artificial slope made out of reconstituted decomposed granite and some laboratory observations including the estimation of soil hydraulic parameters.

This work applies insights from sociolinguistics, text-linguistics, social psychology, women's studies, informal logic, and tagmemic theory to the task of investigating sex-based textual differences in argumentative text.
