Mercury is emitted to the air from Hg-enriched and low Hg-containing (natural background) substrates. Emitted Hg can be geogenic, or can be derived from the re-emission of Hg that was previously deposited to the soil from the atmosphere. Atmospheric Hg can be derived from natural and/or anthropogenic sources and can be deposited by wet or dry processes. It is important to understand the relative magnitude of emission, deposition, and re-emission of Hg associated with terrestrial ecosystems with natural background soil Hg concentrations because these landscapes cover large terrestrial surface areas. This information is also important for developing biogeochemical mass balances, …

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Electron beam lithography is gaining widespread use as semiconductor industry. Current optical lithography techniques are limited to resolution of few hundreds of nanometers and suffer from diffraction problems. The focus of this thesis is to pattern single electron transistors (SET) using electron beam lithography on silicon and silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate which can be further processed to form working SET device. We used different types of e-beam resists like UVN 30, PMMA and HSQ to define source, drain and island for SET. We demonstrated the use of RIE and Deep RIE to etch silicon by using resist as etch …

Thermal Enhancement Of Stacked Dies Using Thermal Vias, Baekyoung Sung
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Following Moore's law, the number of transistors on a die continues to rise and has recently exceeded a billion on high end processors. In light of the convergence of technology, power requirements is becoming a serious concern even on low density interconnect systems such as cellular phones and personal digital assistants. Also, in order to minimize foot prints, the recent trend in packaging is stacking. The stacking, however, creates challenges in cooling and especially if one is to include logic in the stack. The primary heat flow path for stacking is through the substrate and as the number of stacks …

Phase Locked Loop For Radiation Hardened Environment, Jer-Fu Dennis Wu
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis describes a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) design for operation within a radiation environment. Specific design architecture and techniques were implemented to help mitigate radiation effects that degrade PLL performance. This thesis presents several elements of a rad-hard PLL that were developed to solve this challenge, such as a very wideband coupling coefficient LC VCO that has a much higher frequency tuning range than conventional varactor based LC VCOs. The PLL consists a Phase and Frequency Detector (PFD), a rail to rail charge pump, a loop filter, the quadrature LC tank Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO), a Current Mode Logic …

Inductive Theoretical Integration: Approaching A General Theory Of Crime, Mark Christopher Saber
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study is to discuss and use theoretical integration in an attempt to better explain criminal behavior. Data for this study was obtained through a random power sample of undergraduate college students enrolled in criminology and criminal justice classes. Respondents chose a criminal behavior from a typology of drug, property, or violent criminal acts, and then chose theories which could aid in the explanation of that criminal behavior. The respondents were also asked the same concerning self-reported criminal activity. Analysis of the data showed that theoretical integration was used, by the respondents, to explain drug-related crimes committed …

In 1992, Vaillancourt and Weeden discovered a very important mutation for studying cowpea evolution and domestication. A loss of a BamHI restriction site in chloroplast DNA characterized all domesticated accessions and a few wild (Vigna unguiculata ssp. unguiculata var. spontanea) accessions. In order to screen a larger number of accessions, primers were designed to check this mutation using PCR RFLP or direct PCR methods. Using these new primers, 54 domesticated cowpea accessions and 130 accessions from the wild progenitor were screened. The absence of haplotype 0 was confirmed within domesticated accessions, including primitive landraces from cultivar-groups Biflora and Textilis, suggesting …

The stemborers Chilo partellus and Busseola fusca are major pests of subsistence cereal farming in Africa. Volatiles released by two cultivated hosts, sorghum and maize (Sorghum bicolor and Zea mays), and two wild grass hosts, Pennisetum purpureum and Hyparrhenia tamba, were collected by air entrainment. Electrophysiologically active components in these samples were detected by coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography (GC-EAG), and the active peaks identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 41 compounds were identified from the four plant species, all of which, as well as two unidentified compounds, elicited an electrophysiological response from one or both of the stemborers. The …

Background: For remote identification of mosquito habitats the first step is often to construct a discrete tessellation of the region. In applications where complex geometries do not need to be represented such as urban habitats, regular orthogonal grids are constructed in GIS and overlaid on satellite images. However, rice land vector mosquito aquatic habitats are rarely uniform in space or character. An orthogonal grid overlaid on satellite data of rice-land areas may fail to capture physical or man-made structures, i.e paddies, canals, berms at these habitats. Unlike an orthogonal grid, digitizing each habitat converts a polygon into a grid cell, …

The Acute Effects Of Active Warm-Up And Passive Warm-Up On Passive Tension, Troyce Solley
Kinesiology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of active warm-up (stationary cycling) and passive warm-up (heat pack) on the mechanical properties of the hamstring musculature in vivo. Passive tension measurements were recorded during the passive knee extensions of ten men before and after an active warm-up, passive warm-up, and control treatments. The results of the present investigation revealed no effect of active warm-up or passive warm-up on the passive tension variables of energy absorbed, energy returned, peak torque, average stiffness, or peak stiffness of the hamstring musculature. These findings suggest that the mechanical properties of the connective …
Children’S Use Of Retreats In Family Child Care Homes, Nanci Weinberger
Children’S Use Of Retreats In Family Child Care Homes, Nanci Weinberger
Applied Psychology Department Faculty Journal Articles
The use of retreat spaces by 65 children in 9 family child care homes was assessed in this study. Family child care providers used daily diaries to collect information about children’s retreat frequency and associated behavior. The findings revealed that nearly half of the children used informal, readily available retreats during the research period. Playing with toys was the most frequent and stable retreat activity across age groups. Yet the number of passive and engaged behaviors varied based on child characteristics such as age, gender, and child’s mood for the day. Retreat use can be viewed as a potentially adaptive …

Effect Of Staged Practices And Motivational Climate On Goal Orientation And Sportsmanship In Community Youth Sport Experiences, Mary Sara Wells, Gary D. Ellis, Skye G. Arthur-Banning, Mark F. Roark
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Significant acts of poor sportsmanship and aggression are becoming increasingly prevalent in youth sports. Youth who have negative experiences as a result of witnessing or being directly involved in such poor sportsmanship experiences are less likely to participate in future sport activities, thereby contributing to sedentary lifestyles and a number of health related problems. Goal orientation theory provides a basis for understanding why many of these unsporting acts may occur. “Task-oriented” participants focus on their intra-individual growth and development in sports and tend to be much less involved in aggression and poor sportsmanship. In contrast, “Egooriented” participants judge success in …

Effects Of Irrigation And Mowing On Species Diversity Of Grass And Wildflower Mixtures For The Intermountain West, Daniel W. Dewey, Paul G. Johnson, Roger Kjelgren
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Grass and wildflower mixtures can be aesthetically appealing, water-conserving, low-maintenance alternatives to conventional turfgrass. One problem with these mixtures is loss of species diversity over time. We examined the effects of irrigation and mowing on the species diversity of 3 grass and wild-flower mixtures. The nonirrigated and non-mowed treatment combination maintained diversity most effectively whereas the irrigated and mowed treatment combination was least effective. Generally, when the irrigation treatment was significant (P < 0.05), irrigated plots contained more wildflowers. When the mowing treatment was significant (P < 0.05), mowed plots contained more common yarrow (Achillea millefolium L. [Asteraceae]) and strawberry clover (Trifolium fragiferum L. [Fabaceae]) and fewer Pacific aster (Symphyotrichum chilense (Nees) Nesom [Asteraceae]). Height measurements on non-mowed plots showed that irrigated plots had taller canopies than nonirrigated plots. Common yarrow was the most competitive wildflower, followed by strawberry clover and Pacific aster. Mixture 3 containing crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn. [Poaceae]) and thickspike wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus (Scribn. & J.G. Sm.) Gould ssp. lanceolatus [Poaceae]) maintained species diversity for the longest duration under nonirrigated and non-mowed conditions.

The productivity of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems has been discussed in several other studies in the past decade. Those studies utilized several research methodologies, including case studies, surveys and archival data. The results were largely consistent with the theoretical predictions that ERP implementation enhances firm productivity. The only exceptions were the results of studies that were conducted using financial archival data as a measure of productivity. This study predicts that the exceptional findings of the previous studies in the ERP-productivity relationship are due to the failure to consider several important factors: CEO equity holdings and horizon, timing of the …

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Over the recent years the electric loads in automobiles have increased considerably due to advancements in high-power semiconductor based converters. However, with increasing electrical and electrically driven loads, there have been increasing concerns on system reliability. Faults occurring in such application specific solid state converters can lead to fatal consequences as compared to their mechanical counter parts. Thus, it is vital to identify faults in such systems to develop necessary safety techniques and methodologies. Detailed analysis of faults processes has indicated the need to act quickly following a device failure to prevent propagation of faults that may lead to catastrophic …

Corruption And Growth Under Weak Identification, Philip Shaw, Marina-Selini Katsaiti, Marius Jurgilas
Economics Working Papers
The goal of this paper is to revisit the influential work of Mauro [1995] focusing on the strength of his results under weak identification. He finds a negative impact of corruption on investment and economic growth that appears to be robust to endogeneity when using two-stage least squares (2SLS). Since the inception of Mauro [1995], much literature has focused on 2SLS methods revealing the dangers of estimation and thus inference under weak identification. We reproduce the original results of Mauro [1995] with a high level of confidence and show that the instrument used in the original work is in fact …

"...freed of the constraints of physical space and media, digital libraries can be more adaptive and reflective of the communities they serve. They should be collaborative, allowing users to contribute knowledge to the library, either actively through annotations, reviews, and the like, or passively through their patterns of resource use. In addition, they should be contextual, expressing the expanding web of inter-relationships and layers of knowledge that extend among selected primary resources. In this manner, the core of the digital library should be an evolving information base, weaving together professional selection and the 'wisdom of crowds.'" (Lagoze, Krafft, Payette, & …
