Cannibalism In A Cultural Context: Cartographic Imagery And Iconography Of The New World Indigenous Peoples During The Age Of Discovery, Cynthia Ann Chambers Dec 2006

Cannibalism In A Cultural Context: Cartographic Imagery And Iconography Of The New World Indigenous Peoples During The Age Of Discovery, Cynthia Ann Chambers

History Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation seeks to explore the imagery of the indigenous peoples as cannibals on the fifteenth-century cartography of the New World. This imagery represented the Amerindians of the South American interior on maps and in the minds of Europeans who relied on accounts and illustrations to inform them about the New World. The geographic specificity of cannibal imagery on New World cartography reflected the accounts by voyagers who returned from their transatlantic journey. While many of the cartographers never left the European countries of their origin, their work often encompassed both the littoral boundaries and the cultural differences that defined …

Fabrication, Characterization And Hall Mobility Analysis Of Mos Devices With Low-K And High-K Dielectric Materials, Rakshit Agrawal

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Scaling of MOSFETS has led to leakage current problems in SiO2 dielectric based MOSFETS. This has led to the introduction of high-k dielectric materials which can afford greater physical thickness and achieve the same capacitance with lesser equivalent oxide thickness. But the high-k devices have certain limitations like channel mobility degradation. Mobility degradation in high-k MISFETS is discussed in this work using Hall measurements. The MOS devices were fabricated with SiO2 and HfSiO, on p-type silicon substrate. The fabrication process flow used for both type of MOS devices is explained. Characterization and analysis was performed for the determination of various …

Biology Theses - Archive

A method for identifying individual Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra L.) from measurements of their footprints was first tested by performing experiments with captive animals. Digital photographs were taken of imprints in mud of all paws of 12 known individuals. Using customized software, 131 distance, angle, and proportion measurements were generated and subjected to discriminant and canonical analyses. The stepwise procedures of discrimination were the principal statistical analyses used. Analyzing each foot separately while using all available imprints yielded 86-93% correct classification and 59-77% Jacknife cross-validation. The efficiency of these analyses was not significantly affected by randomly reducing the number of …

The Formation And Obduction Of Ophiolites Since The Late Precambrian, Stacey Metzler Dec 2006

The Formation And Obduction Of Ophiolites Since The Late Precambrian, Stacey Metzler

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Ophiolite formation and emplacement has been episodic since the Late Precambrian. This research study examines ophiolites that formed during the Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic and Late Precambrian. The ophiolites were plotted on paleogeographic reconstructions using PALEOMAP Project maps, and the ophiolite localities were analyzed by their temporal distribution in relation to the tectonic framework in which they were emplaced. The ophiolites appear to show episodic events linked to global plate reorganization. These episodes coincide with collisional events from the supercontinents of Gondwana and Pangea. The primary mechanisms of formation and emplacement proved to be mid-ocean ridge systems and back arc basins …

An Acoustic, Historical, And Developmental Analysis Of Sarikol Tajik Diphthongs, Pamela S. Arlund Dec 2006

An Acoustic, Historical, And Developmental Analysis Of Sarikol Tajik Diphthongs, Pamela S. Arlund

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Sarikol Tajik has been reported to be an unusual language, containing up to twelve diphthongs and being the only language in the Gorno-Badakhshan family to not contain a short and long vowel distinction among monophthongs. However, the basis of such claims is not clear and could be accounted for by any of several factors. For example, different researchers have utilized different definitions of diphthongs, some researchers have (perhaps unknowingly) studied different dialects at different times, while others simply failed to account for the variation that is often found in languages in change. This dissertation reevaluates these claims and the potential …

Does An Exotic Invasive Grass Facilitate The Invasion Of A Woody Species Into Remnant Prairies?: A Study Of The Native, Prosopis Glandulosa And The Alien, Sorghum Halapense, Amie E. Treuer

Biology Theses - Archive

The native tree, Prosopis glandulosa, and the exotic grass, Sorghum halepense, have been invading native prairies in the Southwest U.S. since the 1800s. My objectives were to determine if S. halepense was driving shifts in the abiotic and biotic structure of a native prairie and in doing so facilitating the invasion of P. glandulosa. Both field and greenhouse experiments were established to address these objectives. The presence of S. halepense lowered light and increased soil N in the field relative to the native prairie. Plant species diversity and the number of woody species were higher in an invaded zone than …

Kairos, Nomos, New Media: Paradox As A Reservoir For Invention, Robert Leston

English Dissertations - Archive

In the wake of the so-called "social turn" in writing studies, the scholarship of invention has enjoyed renewed interest. This dissertation is primarily concerned with invigorating the research of invention by turning towards viable but untapped generative approaches for composing that have been forged by artists working in areas external to composition studies by putting into practice what media theorist Gregory Ulmer calls a "heuretic" approach to invention. (I use the term heuretic to indicate the appropriation of an inventional model from a domain or discipline such as art, though other domains such as engineering would suit just as well.) …

Legitimate Strategies In Writing : Exploring Esol Learner Perspectives On Attribution, Danielle Elaine Plauche

Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive

In many academic institutions today, ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language) writers may incorporate background sources into their writing in ways unrecognized by their academic institutions, which could lead to these learners' academic success or failure. In recent years, researchers and teachers alike have sought to understand the ways ESOL writers understand and avoid plagiarism in many academic institutions. Yet there is little research which explores the perspectives of ESOL writers regarding strategies that are used to attribute authorship. The following study explores the strategies that eight ESOL writers in four different pre-academic proficiency levels use to attribute …

Branch-And-Cut-And-Price Methods For Logistics Problems With Limited Risk, Hee-Su Hwang Dec 2006

Branch-And-Cut-And-Price Methods For Logistics Problems With Limited Risk, Hee-Su Hwang

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

There exist many uncertainties in a logistics system, such as unknown demand, unsteady fuel cost, machine breakdowns, and accidents to name a few. Logistics management is difficult because logistics managers must solve a global optimization problem, which includes eliminating as much uncertainty as possible, finding effective methods of managing uncertainty, and operating the entire logistics system effectively. To cope with uncertainty, many efforts have been made for vehicle routing problems. On the contrary, traditional ship-scheduling models ignore uncertainty, even in highly volatile markets. We present a set-packing model that limits risk using a quadratic variance constraint. After generating first-order linear …

Large -Eddy Simulation Of The Effects Of Debris On Tornado Dynamics, Baiyun Gong Dec 2006

Large -Eddy Simulation Of The Effects Of Debris On Tornado Dynamics, Baiyun Gong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tornadoes are one of the most intensely violent natural phenomena, which often bring considerable damage. Debris clouds are commonly observed along the tornado path. Studying tornadoes with debris is potentially important for several reasons: particle suspension may dramatically change the structure of the carrier flow; debris clouds represent one of the primary visual signatures of a tornado; large debris loadings can significantly enhance damage potential; differences between air and debris flow can complicate interpretation of Doppler radar measurements of velocity fields.;In earlier work, debris was added to an existing high-resolution LES model using a two-fluid Eulerian-Eulerian approach. The debris cloud …

Holographic Patterning Of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Materials For Diffractive Optical Elements, Robert Allan Ramsey Dec 2006

Holographic Patterning Of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Materials For Diffractive Optical Elements, Robert Allan Ramsey

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Liquid crystals are a soft condensed matter phase that share properties with both isotropic liquids and crystalline solids. Composite materials formed from both low molecular weight liquid crystals and polymers are of both fundamental and technological importance. One method for preparing dispersions of polymers and liquid crystals is polymerization-induced phase separation. Photo-polymerization induced phase separation utilizes a mixture of a liquid crystal and a photo curable polymer contained between two indium tin-oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates. Irradiation of the homogeneous pre-polymer mixture initiates polymerization, which in turn induces a phase separation between the polymer and liquid crystal. Holographically patterned polymer …

Faint X‐Ray Structure In The Crab Pulsar Wind Nebula, F. D. Seward, W. H. Tucker, R. A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report on a Chandra observation of the Crab Nebula that gives the first clear view of the faint boundary of the Crab's X-ray-emitting pulsar wind nebula. There is structure in all directions. Fingers, loops, bays, and the south pulsar jet all indicate that either filamentary material or the magnetic field is controlling the relativistic electrons. In general, spectra soften as distance from the pulsar increases but do not change rapidly along linear features. This is particularly true for the pulsar jet. The termination of the jet is abrupt; the east side is close to an [O III] optical filament, …

Express Risk Assessment For The Dispersion Of Aerosols In An Urban Environment Using Probabilistic Implicit Tracking, Steven Lee Rowan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The dispersion or transport of an airborne aerosol, whether the result of pollution or terrorist attack, is a topic of much interest to researchers and governmental officials in the United States. Due to this, there have been numerous efforts to develop accurate aerosol dispersion models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Lagrangian Particle Dynamics (LPD) in order to predict how an aerosol-suspended material will propagate in an urban environment. However, the complexity of these models require significant amounts of computational resources and are not practical for quickly modeling an actual event.;In this study, a stochastic simulation of Probabilistic Implicit Tracking …
