Influence Of Optical Cues From Conspecific Females On Escalation Decisions During Male-Male Interactions Of Jumping Spiders, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson, Simon D. Pollard, Mark W. Walker

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

An important prediction from game theory is that the value of a resource influences the level to which male-male conflict escalates. An earlier experimental study showed that males of Hypoblemum albovittatum, a common salticid in New Zealand, can discern by sight alone whether a female is in the vicinity and that, having detected a female's presence, males escalate (i.e., adopt behaviour that is likely to put them at greater risk of injury). Seeing a bare moving cork, a conspecific male or a prey item also elicits escalation, but not to the level elicited by seeing a conspecific female. Here the …

Revisiting The Ethics Of Hiv Prevention Research In Developing Countries, Charles Weijer, Guy Leblanc Aug 2006

Revisiting The Ethics Of Hiv Prevention Research In Developing Countries, Charles Weijer, Guy Leblanc

Philosophy Presentations

Issues: We present key aspects of our paper, commissioned by UNAIDS in 2005, entitled, “Revisiting the ethics of HIV prevention research in developing countries.” In 2004 and 2005 we witnessed the closure or suspension of three international clinical trials testing tenofovir in the prevention of HIV infection in high risk groups due to the failure to provide free treatment to those who seroconvert during the conduct of the study. We examine critically moral claims for the provision of treatment to those who seroconvert in HIV prevention trials and ask whether it is a matter of moral obligation or moral negotiation? …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

With the recent technological gains made in satellite design and manufacturing, there has been great interest in utilizing a cluster of satellites to perform the same tasks performed by larger satellites. Historically, this has been done utilizing the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations, or the Hill's equations, as a benchmark for understanding the physics of the relative motion between two spacecraft. A variety of different models have been derived and implemented to study the relative motion dynamics since the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire (HCW) equations. Some of these models, like the HCW equations, are linearized and have analytical solutions. These models make the underlying physics due …

Investigation Of The Suitability Of The Biscatecholborate Anion As A Reductive Quencher For Photoexcited Ruthenium Polyphyridyl Complexes, Alper Yarasik Aug 2006

Investigation Of The Suitability Of The Biscatecholborate Anion As A Reductive Quencher For Photoexcited Ruthenium Polyphyridyl Complexes, Alper Yarasik

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Ruthenium polypyridyl complexes [Ru(L-L)3]2+, (L-L = 1,10 - phenanthroline or 2,2'- bipyridine) which covalently linked to electron donor or acceptor units are frequently used in artificial photosystems because of their high emission quantum yields, long excited-state lifetimes, favorable redox properties and excellent chemical stability. The ruthenium dimer P, [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)Ru(phen)2][PF6]4, undergoes multiple photoreductions in the presence of donors such as triethylamine (TEA); however, large amount of donors (0.3 M) are required for efficient reductions. This explores the use of a anionic donor such as [B(cat)2]- with the hypothesis that ion-pairing will result in lower required concentration of the donor. Electrochemical data …

Learning State And Action Space Hierarchies For Reinforcement Learning Using Action-Dependent Partitioning, Mehran Asadi Aug 2006

Learning State And Action Space Hierarchies For Reinforcement Learning Using Action-Dependent Partitioning, Mehran Asadi

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Autonomous systems are often dicult to program. Reinforcement learning (RL) is an attractive alternative, as it allows the agent to learn behavior on the basis of sparse, delayed reward signals provided only when the agent reaches desired goals. Recent attempts to address the dimensionality of RL have turned to principled ways of exploiting temporal abstraction, where decisions are not required at each step, but rather invoke the execution of temporally-extended activities which follow their own policies un- til termination. This leads naturally to hierarchical control architectures and associated learning algorithms. This dissertation reviews several approaches to temporal abstraction and hierarchical …
