Thermal Effects Of Phase Transformations: A Review, A. Umantsev Jan 2007

Thermal Effects Of Phase Transformations: A Review, A. Umantsev

College of Health, Science, and Technology

All the stages of phase transformations in materials, nucleation, growth, and coarsening, are subject to thermal effects that stem from the redistribution of energy in the system, like release of latent heat, and heat conduction. The thermal effects change the rate and outcome of the transformation and may result in the appearance of unusual states or phases, in particular in nanosystems. This review will cover the attempts of researchers to build a comprehensive theory of thermal effects in different phase transformations. Although the dynamical Ginzburg-Landau (continuum) approach will be used for the analysis of the effects, they are robust and …

The Globalisation Of Human Rights Law, The Hon David K. Malcolm Jan 2007

The Globalisation Of Human Rights Law, The Hon David K. Malcolm

Law Papers and Journal Articles

Australia has ratified multiple international human rights instruments. However, in comparison to other common law jurisdictions, Australia is 'behind the times'. The fact is that Australia has not adopted a Bill of Rights and its human rights legislation is ad hoc The legal protection that different human rights receive in Australia is contradictory. The question of whether Australia should adopt a Bill of Rights and, if so, in what form and with what content is essentially political. Nonetheless, the answer to the question needs to be informed by a greater awareness of the role and function of human rights in …

Surface Modification Of 6h-Sic Under Vacuum Annealing Studied By Time Of Flight Positron Annihilation Induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Saurabh Mukherjee Jan 2007

Surface Modification Of 6h-Sic Under Vacuum Annealing Studied By Time Of Flight Positron Annihilation Induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Saurabh Mukherjee

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis presents the first study of vacuum annealing of 6H- SiC surface using Time-of-Flight-Positron Annihilation induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy(TOF-PAES) . The study was the first application of a TOF-PAES spectrometer to the SiC. The increased efficiency of the TOF-PAES allows us to see simultaneously for the first time Si-LVV, C-KVV, O-KVV peaks in the PAES spectrum for SiC. The top layer surface concentrations of C, O and Si were monitored by TOF-PAES surface. The results indicate that the SiC surface was initially covered with a layer containing oxygen but largely devoid of Si which was subsequently removed as a …

The Impact Of Property Flipping On Single Family Detached Home Prices, Wesley H. English Jan 2007

The Impact Of Property Flipping On Single Family Detached Home Prices, Wesley H. English

Finance and Real Estate Theses - Archive

In 2003 HUD ruled that flipped properties, which are defined as recently acquired properties that have been resold, often within days, and for a substantial profit, are ineligible for FHA insured mortgage financing. This research uses the HUD ruling as the basis for this study. Their ruling was based on the perception that property flipping had a negative effect on home prices among other things. The study uses hedonic modeling to empirically determine if houses that have previously flipped have any influence on value when compared to the non-flipped properties in the same market. Through a regression analysis, it is …

F1 And Center Of Gravity Interplay In The Maintenance Of Phonological Height Within A Statistical Model Of A Communal Grammar: The Case Of Foodo [Atr] Acoustics, Colleen G. Anderson Jan 2007

F1 And Center Of Gravity Interplay In The Maintenance Of Phonological Height Within A Statistical Model Of A Communal Grammar: The Case Of Foodo [Atr] Acoustics, Colleen G. Anderson

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This paper presents the notion of an idealized or communal grammar as a statistical model of mode, mean or median as emerging from a representative number of a population, rather than in individual speech, per se. Like other languages with a 9-vowel Cross Height Vowel Harmony (CHVH) system, the most reliable correlate of ATR is F1; [+ATR] vowels have lower F1 values than their [-ATR] counterparts, while F2 differences show considerable variation across speakers. F1, however, fails to maintain phonological height differences as the [+ATR] mid vowels of level 3 overlap in acoustic space with the [-ATR] high vowels of …

Ecologically Performative Landscapes And Water Management, David Hopman Jan 2007

Ecologically Performative Landscapes And Water Management, David Hopman

Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications - Archive

Performative theory has been applied to many facets of social theory including economic theory, sexual orientation, and regionalism in architecture. Simply stated, it is the notion that a thing becomes what it purports to be through actions and behaviors. The term is applied here to landscapes in complex cultural environments with environmental features that are used to mitigate or even to enhance the environmental footprint of the landscape. These landscapes are a recognition that designers should no longer separate "natural" areas from the places where people actually live and work.

On The Size Of Succinct Indices, Alexander Golynski, Ankur Gupta Jan 2007

On The Size Of Succinct Indices, Alexander Golynski, Ankur Gupta

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A succinct data structure occupies an amount of space that is close to the information-theoretic minimum plus an additional term. The latter is not necessarily a lower-order term and, in several cases, completely dominates the space occupancy both in theory and in practice. In this paper, we present several solutions to partially overcome this problem, introducing new techniques of independent interest that allow us to improve over previously known upper and lower bounds.

Temperature-Driven Transition From The Wigner Crystal To The Bond-Charge-Density Wave In The Quasi-One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Band, Rahul Hardikar Jan 2007

Temperature-Driven Transition From The Wigner Crystal To The Bond-Charge-Density Wave In The Quasi-One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Band, Rahul Hardikar

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

It is known that within the interacting electron model Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional 14-filled band, the singlet ground state is a Wigner crystal only if the nearest-neighbor electron-electron repulsion is larger than a critical value. We show that this critical nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction is different for each spin subspace, with the critical value decreasing with increasing spin. As a consequence, with the lowering of temperature, there can occur a transition from a Wigner crystal charge-ordered state to a spin-Peierls state that is a bond-charge-density wave with charge occupancies different from the Wigner crystal. This transition is possible because spin excitations …

A Perception Study On The Third Tone In Mandarin Chinese, Rui Cao, Priyankoo Sarmah

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This experimental study examines the role of the shape of the pitch contour in the perception of the Mandarin Chinese tone 3.2 A set of stimuli was constructed by varying the pitch of tone 3 on two conditions: (1) varying the duration of the dip (or turning point) and (2) varying the timing of the turning point (duration of the slope). The manipulated pitch contours of tone 3 were presented to the native speakers of Mandarin Chinese in two sets: (a) a set of speech stimuli and (b) a set of non-speech stimuli. The participants of the experiment were asked …

Argument Realization Of Chinese Result And Phase Complements, Han-Chun Huang Jan 2007

Argument Realization Of Chinese Result And Phase Complements, Han-Chun Huang

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This paper discusses result complements and phase complements in Chinese, both of which are postverbal elements. Despite their surface similarity, they are different with respect to argument realization. While the result complements allow complicated argument realization (in terms of semantic host, verbal transitivity, and subcategorization of objects), the phase complements function as lexical aspect markers, or Aktionsarten, and do not participate in argument realization. I adopt a constructional approach, particularly Boas’s (2003) event-frames and linking rules. Inverted causative resultative constructions in Chinese are also discussed. They are strong evidence for “constructional participants” that interact with event participants in determining syntactic …

Simulation And Development Of Nanoscale Deposition Techniques Using Kinetic Monte Carlo, Corey Clark Jan 2007

Simulation And Development Of Nanoscale Deposition Techniques Using Kinetic Monte Carlo, Corey Clark

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Modeling of deposition processes has become of extreme importance due to the small scale of devices and features as well as the reduction of time to market required by industry. Current modeling procedures have focused on individual aspects of growth as well as made assumptions that cause simplification of the problem to the point the models usefulness is limited. The Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) model developed in this work combines rate transitions that have been commonly found in KMC simulation along with energy density equations that help explain the transitions and formations of island in alloy deposition. Specifically the model …

Perception And Presentation: Mythological Imagery And The Female Gaze In Italian Renaissance Art, Victoria Ehrlich Jan 2007

Perception And Presentation: Mythological Imagery And The Female Gaze In Italian Renaissance Art, Victoria Ehrlich

Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive

Ostensibly, it would seem that during the Renaissance, subjects of mythological origin in the visual arts were almost exclusively created with the male patron in mind. While this is a highly visible trend, it is important to remember that women, too, were spectators of art steeped in mythological imagery. Cassoni and spalliere were marriage chests and wall panels customarily commissioned for wedding rituals of the era and were often painted with such stories. To determine how the female gaze differed from its male counterpart in the fifteenth and sixteenth century, paintings meant for the eyes of a specific couple are …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Modified Weaver-Dunn procedure must always be supplemented with acromioclavicular capsuloligamentous repair to increase posterior-anterior stability. Palmaris-Longus tendon graft provides both additional superior and posterior-anterior stability when used for acromioclavicular capsuloligamentous reconstruction. It is a good alternative to clavicle hook plate in acromioclavicular dislocation.

Kentucky Structural Contours From Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles, Kentucky Geological Survey

Research Data--KGS

This dataset includes geologic stuctural contours of varying datums across Kentucky in shapefile format. These structural contours are compiled from structural contour layers published as a part of the individual Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles (DVGQ) datasets (by the Kentucky Geologic Survey: https://kgs.uky.edu/kygeode/services/pubs/?pubtype=DVGQ&searchtype=pubcategory). The original structural contours were mapped on the 7.5-minute (1:24,000 scale) series geologic maps published during the Kentucky geologic mapping program (Kentucky Geological Survey - U.S. Geological Survey from 1960 to 1989: https://kgs.uky.edu/kygeode/services/pubs/?pubtype=GQ&searchtype=pubcategory). The digital contours were subsequently digitized as a part of the DVGQ datasets during the geologic digital mapping program at KGS (1996 – 2007). Contoured …

A Weighted Residual Parabolic Acceleration Time Integration Method For Problems In Structural Dynamics, Ali Abolmaali, S.H. Razavi, M. Ghassemieh

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

In the proposed method, the variation of displacement in each time step is assumed to be a fourth order polynomial in time and its five unknown coefficients are calculated based on: two initial conditions from the previous time step; satisfying the equation of motion at both ends of the time step; and the zero weighted residual within the time step. This method is non-dissipative and its dispersion is considerably less than in other popular methods. The stability of the method shows that the critical time step is more than twice of that for the linear acceleration method and its convergence …

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The Laramide orogen of the U.S. Cordillera formed in the latest Cretaceous, and deformation lasted into the earliest Oligocene. Along and proximal to the eastern and northern margins of the Colorado Plateau, deformation associated with this event mainly took place along reactivated structures. Related tectonic models invoke some role for the plateau either as a stress guide transmitting compression to the foreland or as a freely rotating microplate. Models dominated by northward displacements of the Colorado Plateau also require covariance between timing and magnitude of dextral strike-slip deformation in the eastern domain and thrust deformation in the northern domain. Here …

Language And The Shaping Of The Arab-American Identity, Dalal Saleh Almubayei Jan 2007

Language And The Shaping Of The Arab-American Identity, Dalal Saleh Almubayei

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This study is an attempt to shed light on the interaction between language and the ethnic, cultural, and religious identities of Arab-Americans. It employs two focus groups consisting of Arab-Americans who share a group dialogue about the aspects of language and identity. The groups differ in terms of two variables: age and generation. Participants shared their experiences, life stories, feelings, and perspectives about the role of Arabic and English in their lives. The older participants emphasized a concern of language and ethnic identity loss among their U.S. born children, while younger participants talked about the importance of Arabic to belong …

Preliminary Tone Analysis Of Possessed Nouns In Chicahuaxtla Trique, Kosuke Matsukawa Jan 2007

Preliminary Tone Analysis Of Possessed Nouns In Chicahuaxtla Trique, Kosuke Matsukawa

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

Chicahuaxtla Trique is one of the Trique languages spoken in Oaxaca, Mexico. Among three Trique languages, Chicahuaxtla Trique has the most complicated tone system and its tone system has not been fully understood yet. When a noun is possessed, a contrastive tone on the final syllable of a noun stem is often changed with a post-clitic pronoun and, less frequently, with an independent pronoun in Chicahuaxtla Trique. In this paper, I will analyze the tone patterns for possessed nouns in Chicahuaxtla Trique based on my fieldwork data. Although the analysis is still at the preliminary stage and more comprehensive data …

Default Prediction For Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities, James Scott Dudley Jan 2007

Default Prediction For Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities, James Scott Dudley

Finance and Real Estate Theses - Archive

Commercial mortgage default has become a topic of interest for a large number of parties due to the emergence and continued growth of the secondary mortgage market. With the multitude of parties holding a vested interest, it is important to develop a highly efficient method of monitoring collateral performance and ultimately be able to confidently predict or anticipate default. This study shows the correlation between appearance of a loan on a Watchlist and its potential to become delinquent in the future. While testing this hypothesis, a model is created that incorporates several other variables readily used to predict collateral performance …

Software Architecture For Data Storage Concepts Within Future Mobile Telecommunication Systems, Andreas Diehl

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In current mobile telecommunication networks, databases and the subscriber data is distributed among multiple network domains and database systems. The heterogeneous data storage concept is based on the permanent evolution of the mobile networks and the support of different kinds of network technologies. Dependent on the particular network domain and the dedicated technology, distributed subscriber data has to be accessed via specialised protocols. This thesis proposes a novel software architecture for the next generation profile register (NGPR) - an approach to provide subscriber information using a logically centralised register for subscriber data from several mobile network domains. The NGPR subscriber data …

Heavy Quarks At Rhic From Parton Transport Theory, D. Molnar Jan 2007

Heavy Quarks At Rhic From Parton Transport Theory, D. Molnar

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

There are several indications that an opaque partonic medium is created in energetic Au + Au collisions (root s(NN) similar to 100 GeV/nucleon) at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC). At the extreme densities of similar to 10 - 100 times normal nuclear density reached, even heavy-flavor hadrons are affected significantly. Heavy-quark observables are presented from the parton transport model MPC, focusing on the nuclear suppression pattern, azimuthal anisotropy ("elliptic flow"), and azimuthal correlations. Comparison with Au + Au data at top RHIC energy root s(NN) = 200 GeV indicates significant heavy-quark rescattering, corresponding roughly five times higher opacities than …
