A DNA hybridization based optical detection platform for the detection of foodborne pathogens has been developed with virtually zero probability of the false negative signal. This portable, low-cost and real-time assaying detection platform utilizes the color changing molecular beacon as a probe for the optical detection of the target sequence. The computer-controlled detection platform exploits the target hybridization induced change of fluorescence color due to the Foster (fluorescence) resonance energy transfer (FRET) between a pair of spectrally shifted fluorophores conjugated to the opposite ends of a beacon (oligonucleotide probe). Unlike the traditional fluorophore-quencher beacon design, the presence of two fluorescence …

Soy Isoflavones Do Not Affect Bone Resorption In Postmenopausal Women: A Dose-Response Study Using A Novel Approach With Ca-41, J. M. K. Cheong, B. R. Martin, G. S. Jackson, D. Elmore, G. P. Mccabe, J. R. Nolan, S. Barnes, M. Peacock, C. M. Weaver Jan 2007

Introduction: The purpose of this 3-way crossover study was to identify the effective dose of soy protein isolate enriched with isoflavones for suppressing bone resorption in postmenopausal women using a novel, rapid assessment of antibone resorbing treatments. Methods: Thirteen postmenopausal women (>= 6 yr since menopause) were predosed with Ca-41 iv. After a 200-d baseline period, subjects were given 43 g soy protein/d that contained 0, 97.5, or 135.5 mg total isoflavones in randomized order. The soy protein isolate powder was incorporated into baked products and beverages. Each 50-d intervention phase was preceded by a 50-d pretreatment phase for …

Effects Of Multiple Scattering In Cold Nuclear Matter On J/Psi Suppression And P2t In Heavy Ion Collisions, A. M. Glenn, J. L. Nagle, D. Molnar

Coherent multiple scatterings of c (c) over bar quark pairs in the environment of heavy ion collisions have been used in a previous work by Qiu et al. [J. Qiu, J.P. Vary, X. Zhang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 (2002) 232301; J. Qiu, J.P. Vary, X. Zhang, Nucl. Phys. A 698 (2002) 571, nuel-th/0106040] to study J/psi suppression. That model suggests that heavy quark re-scatterings in a cold nuclear medium can completely explain the centrality dependence of the observed J/psi suppression in Pb + Pb collisions at the SPS [M.C. Abreu, et al., NA50 Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 521 (2001) 195]. …

Measurements of inclusive production of the Lambda, Xi(-) and Xi*(1530) baryons in two-photon collisions with the L3 detector at LEP are presented. The inclusive differential cross sections for Lambda and Xi(-) are measured as a function of the baryon transverse momentum, p(t), and pseudo-rapidity, eta. The mean number of Lambda, Xi(-) and Xi*(1530) baryons per hadronic two-photon event is determined in the kinematic range 0.4 GeV < p(t) < 2.5GeV, vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.2. Overall agreement with the theoretical models and Monte Carlo predictions is observed. A search for inclusive production of the pentaquark theta(+)(1540) in two-photon collisions through the decay theta(+) -> pK(S)(0) is also presented. No evidence for production of this state is found.

This study investigated the impact of larval management and the temporal variation in larval productivity in Eritrea, a semiarid ecosystem. Results of this study show that mosquito breeding persists throughout the year mainly in stream bed pools. Anopheles arabiensis production in the ephemeral natural aquatic habitats such the streambed pools was high throughout the year and negatively associated with rainfall (r = -0.288, P = 0.047). High densities of An. arabiensis larvae were also recorded from canals and drainage channels at wells and communal water supply points. The numerous water supply locations and wells help sustain malaria transmission by serving …

Submicroscopic Plasmodium falciparum gametocytemia (< 5,000 gametocytes/mL) is common and may result in mosquito infection. We assessed the relation between gametocyte density and mosquito infection under experimental and field conditions using real-time quantitative nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (QT-NASBA) for gametocyte quantification. Serial dilutions of NF54 P. falciparum gametocytes showed a positive association between gametocyte density and the proportion of infected mosquitoes (β = 6.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.7-9.6; P = 0.001). Successful infection became unlikely below an estimated density of 250-300 gametocytes/mL. In the field, blood samples of 100 naturally infected children showed a positive association between gametocyte density and oocyst counts in mosquitoes (β = 0.38; 95% CI, 0.14-0.61; P = 0.002). The relative contribution to malaria transmission was similar for carriers with submicroscopic and microscopic gametocytemia. Our results show that transmission occurs efficiently at submicroscopic gametocyte densities and that carriers harboring submicroscopic gametocytemia constitute a considerable proportion of the human infectious reservoir. Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner Jan 2007

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Introduction Increasingly, population modeling and systems analysis are being used to examine the complex issues that are at the heart of CP/IPM (crop production and integrated pest management) and biological control. The design of economically sound and sustainable crop management strategies requires a thorough understanding of the whole production system including arthropod pests, pathogens, and weeds. More than three decades ago, Huffaker and Croft (1976) stressed the need to rely on systems analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration to accomplish this task. Soon the question arose as to how mathematical techniques employed in the analysis of physical systems could be adapted to …

Introduction of irrigation projects in developing nations has often been blamed for aggravating the problem of mosquito-borne diseases by creating ideal larval habitats for vector mosquitoes. However, whereas several studies have demonstrated the relationship between malaria vectors and irrigation, little work has been done on culicine mosquitoes despite their potential in transmission of filariasis and arboviruses and their significant biting nuisance in these areas. This study examined the diversity of Culex mosquito fauna and their larval habitats at two sites (Murinduko and Kiamachiri) in Mwea, Kenya over a 12-month period. The habitat types present at each site within a 200-meter …

Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, is a key pest of tomato in Africa. Surveys have been conducted in the last few years to search for predators associated with this pest in Brazil for introduction into Africa. Biological parameters of Phytoseiulus longipes Evans, one of the predators found in those surveys, were evaluated when it was exposed to different food items, including T. evansi, in laboratory tests. The predator had about the same oviposition rate on T. evansi and on Tetranychus urticae Koch; it did not oviposite when fed on pollen of Ricinus communis L. or Typha sp. When given the …

Infestation levels and parasitism of lepidopteran stemborers on maize were assessed in four agroecological zones (AEZ) in Uganda. The indigenous noctuid Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae) and the invasive Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Crambidae) were the most important stemborers recorded. C. partellus represented 77% of the stemborers in the Eastern AEZ while B. fusca was dominant in the other AEZs, accounting for 60-79%. The proportion of infested plants was between 16% and 45% and borer density between 0.2 and 1.0 borers per plant. There was no clear relationship between damage and stem tunneling, which is often used to estimate yield loss. Telenomus …

Masking Material As A Form Of Food Storage In Tiarinia Cornigera And Micippa Platipes (Brachyura, Majidae), J. Kyomo Dec 2006

Masking Material As A Form Of Food Storage In Tiarinia Cornigera And Micippa Platipes (Brachyura, Majidae), J. Kyomo

Tanzania Journal of Science

Masking or decorating, which means attaching materials to the body, was investigated in two spider crabs Tiarinia cornigera and Micippa platipesin the subtropical waters of Okinawa, Japan. This life strategy was compared between sites over a period of time. All crabs of different ages and sizes attached materials, in one combination or the other, on their bodies proportionate to their carapace sizes. Older or larger crabs had their carapaces more completely covered with the materials than young or smaller crabs. Similar materials were found at all sites and had equal selective precedences by crabs. Red algae, particularly Gelidiella sp, was …

A survey was conducted in Tororo, Bugiri and Kapchorwa districts in eastern and northeastern Uganda on farmers' perceptions of constraints in maize production. Farmers in Tororo and Bugiri consistently ranked stemborers and striga as the major production constraints in maize growing, while those in Kapchorwa ranked stemborers and lack of capital as the most important. Approximately 35 and 40% of the farmers in Tororo and Bugiri, respectively, identified stemborers as the 'caterpillar' that destroys their maize. In Kapchorwa, 50% of the farmers identified stemborers. Pesticide application was the most common control measure while the use of indigenous and cultural control …

Host Shift To Peas In The Diamondback Moth Plutella Xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) And Response Of Its Parasitoid Diadegma Mollipla (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), A. Rossbach, B. Löhr, S. Vidal

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Host shifts in herbivorous insects are thought to sometimes provide enemy-free space on the novel host plant. A population of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), an oligophagous pest on crucifers, recently shifted to sugar snap- and snowpeas (Pisum sativum) in Kenya, resulting in heavy damage to these crops. The impact of this host shift on the interaction with Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren), one of the most frequent parasitoid species attacking P. xylostella in this area, was investigated. Parasitism rates and development of two strains of D. mollipla, one reared from a cabbage-feeding strain of P. xylostella and the second from …

Thermal Failure Mechanism And Voltammetry Metrology For Cu/Barrier/Low K Integration, Dongmei Meng Dec 2006

Thermal Failure Mechanism And Voltammetry Metrology For Cu/Barrier/Low K Integration, Dongmei Meng

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The present study investigates the thermal stability of Cu/barrier/porous low κ (PLK) integration first, and then a new characterization method based on voltammetry is developed to characterize quality of diffusion barrier and pore structure in low κ materials and its thermal stability. The study of thermal stability reveals that Cu/barrier/PLK interconnect fails by Cu out-diffusion through the defects of diffusion barrier into the PLK structure, which is driven by oxidation and stress gradient within the interconnect structure. The failure appears to be triggered by defects in diffusion barrier, however, such defects are not effectively detected by TEM observation due to …

Preparation And Characterization Of Properties Of Electrodeposited Copper Oxide Films, Longcheng Wang

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Copper oxides, including cuprous oxide and cupric oxide, are prepared by electrochemical deposition. The structural, optical and electrical properties of as-deposited copper oxides are evaluated, based on which cuprous oxide is selected as a promising material for photovoltaic applications. Electrodeposited cuprous oxide is a p-type semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.06 eV. The mechanism of how pH affects the structural and electrical properties of electro-deposited cuprous oxide films is studied. In the pH range of 7.5 to 12.0, there are three different preferred crystal orientations: (100), (110) and (111). With different orientations, cuprous oxide shows different surface morphology …

Multi-Sensor Fusion Based Control For Autonomous Operations: Rendezvous And Docking Of Spacecraft, Jonathan Bryan Mcdonald

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The project considers the problem of motion synchronization of free flying robotic spacecraft and serviceable floating objects in space. The synchronization maneuvers are based on sample and hold nonlinear translational and attitude control laws. GPS pseudorange signals and a vision based sensor unit are modeled to give position measurements; position and velocity estimates are extracted from the measurements based on Extended Kalman Filter models. A sensor data fusion algorithm in the form of a Federated Extended Kalman Filter is implemented that blends the estimates of the individual filters into a global estimate. Nonlinear simulations where a Pursuer spacecraft attempted to …

Enhancement Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Using Thermally-Conductive Microporous Coating Techniques, Joo Han Kim Dec 2006

Enhancement Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Using Thermally-Conductive Microporous Coating Techniques, Joo Han Kim

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The present research is an experimental study of the enhancement of boiling heat transfer using microporous coating techniques. The current research is divided into four major phases. During the first phase, the effects of different metal particle sizes in the coating compound for thermally non-conductive microporous coating on pool boiling performance of refrigerants and water are investigated. The test surfaces, solid copper blocks with 1-cm² base, were tested at atmospheric pressure in saturated FC-72, R-123, and water. Results showed that the surface treatment by non-conductive microporous coating significantly enhanced both nucleate boiling and critical heat flux of all three refrigerants. …

Flexible Microfluidic Circuit With Embedded In-Plane Valve, Srikar C. Paruchuri Dec 2006

Flexible Microfluidic Circuit With Embedded In-Plane Valve, Srikar C. Paruchuri

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Recent developments in Microfluidic systems have demonstrated many potential applications related to biology, chemistry and medical sciences. Fluidic manipulation with precise volume control is a basic function in these systems, and microvalves play an important role in control and delivery of the fluid sample. One of the key issues in such valve design is to make large membrane deflections compared to the channel dimension. This thesis reports a flexible microfluidic chip with embedded in-plane valves for fluid manipulation. Silicone elastomer (Polydimethylsiloxane - PDMS) is one of the most suitable materials to fabricate microvalve membranes, because of its low Young's modulus, …

Tracing And Replay Of Real-Time Concurrent Programs In Vxworks, Daxa Keshavji Patel Dec 2006

Tracing And Replay Of Real-Time Concurrent Programs In Vxworks, Daxa Keshavji Patel

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Real-time concurrent programs are difficult to analyze, debug and test because of the existence of race conditions. In particular, cyclic debugging requires the ability to reproduce a failed execution. That is, when a failure is observed during a test run, it is often necessary to reproduce the test run as an effort to locate the bug that has caused the failure. However because of the variations in thread scheduling and signal latency, a real-time concurrent execution may not be reproduced simply by re-executing the program under test. In this thesis, we describe a language-based framework for tracing and replay of …

Performance Analysis Of The Beacon Period Contraction Mechanism In Wimedia Mac For Uwb, Shenjin Sun Dec 2006

Performance Analysis Of The Beacon Period Contraction Mechanism In Wimedia Mac For Uwb, Shenjin Sun

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The WiMedia MAC for UWB based WPANs is currently preferred among standards for wireless network since it requires non-infrastructure for ad hoc network, and also supports for Quality of Service (QoS). Without infrastructure, coordination of devices within radio range is achieved by the exchange of beacon frames, which is an overhead in WiMedia MAC, since no data transmission is allowed during Beacon Period (BP). In a dynamic network, devices might leave or join in, so beacon slots will be released or reoccupied with the changing of network. And BP contraction mechanism is aimed at reusing the released beacon slots in …

Computer-Aided Patient Specific Treatment Planning Of Cryosurgery For Breast Cancer, Junkyu Jung Dec 2006

Computer-Aided Patient Specific Treatment Planning Of Cryosurgery For Breast Cancer, Junkyu Jung

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Cryosurgery, which is to destroy tumors by use of localized freezing, is an emerging treatment modality for breast cancer as the size of detectable tumor becomes smaller due to more frequent use of various diagnostic imaging including MRI, CT and mammogram. Although general surgical guideline has been developed and its effectiveness has been demonstrated, cryosurgical protocol should be adjusted for a given patient to accommodate patient-specific variations including tumor size, location and geometry of patient's breast. In this study, a computerized treatment planning tool was developed to aid surgeons to determine surgical parameters considering patient specific diagnostic information. This tool …

Freezing-Induced Microstructural Changes Of Collagen Scaffolds, Jeffrey David Miller Dec 2006

Freezing-Induced Microstructural Changes Of Collagen Scaffolds, Jeffrey David Miller

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Understanding the effects of freezing on the functional properties of tissues is critical to cryopreservation of native and artificial tissues, and prognosis after cryotherapies. Although investigations have been performed to correlate macroscopic properties such as mechanical properties with freezing parameters, the effects are typically tissue-type dependent and no physical understanding is available to explain these effects. Since the mechanical and optical properties of a tissue are based on the characteristics of its extracellular matrix (ECM), understanding and quantifying these changes could assist in predicting the response a tissue will have to freezing under different circumstances. In this study, the microstructural …
