Data Mining-Driven Approahces For Process Monitoring And Diagnosis, Thuntee Sukchotrat
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The objective of this dissertation is to develop a new set of efficient process monitoring and diagnostic tools through their integration with data mining algorithms. Statistical process control (SPC) is one of the most widely used techniques for quality control. Although traditional SPC tools are effective in simple manufacturing processes that generate a small volume of independent data, these tools falter when confronted by the large streams of complex and correlated data found in modern manufacturing systems. As the limitations of SPC methodology become increasingly obvious in the face of ever more complex manufacturing processes, data mining, because of its …
Use Of Wireless Signal Characteristics For Mobile Robotics Localization And Access Point Mapping, Joshua Davies
Use Of Wireless Signal Characteristics For Mobile Robotics Localization And Access Point Mapping, Joshua Davies
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Mobile robotics is an interesting and challenging emerging field in computer science. To properly achieve true autonomy, a robot must be able to determine where it is in relationshipto a global frame of reference and it must be able to do so with a minimum of interaction fromhuman operators and impose as few constraints on its surroundings as possible. The uncertainnature of mobility and perception requires that advanced probabilistic inference techniques beapplied to minimize error. This work examines the applicability of radio-frequency signals to the mobile robotlocalization problem to localize quickly over a wide area. Particle filtering techniques areemployed to adjust …
The Thermal Effects Of Self Heating Of Transistors On Analog Amplifier Design And Evaluation, Kamal Ranjan Sinha
The Thermal Effects Of Self Heating Of Transistors On Analog Amplifier Design And Evaluation, Kamal Ranjan Sinha
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Electrothermal effects play a major role in the performance of modern silicon-on-insulator (SOI) bipolar junction transistors (BJTs). This research work examines the influence of electrothermal feedback within a single device and within a circuit composed of such devices. Specifically, the frequency-domain thermal effects of self-heating in SOI BJTs on the performance of analog integrated circuits, with emphasis on current mirrors, and current-feedback operational amplifiers (CFOA), are investigated through analytical formulation, simulation, and measurement. For the extensive analysis and characterization of self-heating thermal effects, the Vertical Bipolar Inter-Company (VBIC) models for SOI BJTs are developed from fundamental physical device considerations. Extensive simulations …
Thermal Characterization Of Dielectrically Isolated Bipolar Junction Transistor, Daewoo Kim
Thermal Characterization Of Dielectrically Isolated Bipolar Junction Transistor, Daewoo Kim
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Since the integrated circuit (IC) was invented in 1960, the operating speed of semiconductor devices has steadily increased and the number of semiconductor devices in an IC chip has grown by a size reduction of the devices. This trend has lead to the rapid increase of power consumption and heat generation. As a result of this increase, thermal characterization of semiconductor devices has become more important. It is especially important to consider thermal characteristics of the dielectrically isolated complementary bipolar junction transistor (DIBJT) which offers many advantages. However, a major disadvantage of this device is an increase in self-heating. Because the …

Functional Data Analysis For Environmental And Biomedical Problems, Chivalai Temiyasathit
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Vast amounts of data are being generated due to the development of sensing technology. Among those, one of the common types of data usually found in various discipline is the functional data. Because the functional data are generally collected in a wide area of interest over a relatively long period, such analyses should take into account both temporal and spatial characteristics. Furthermore, combinations of observations from multiple locations, each with a large number of serially correlated values, lead to a situation that poses a great challenge to analytical and computational capabilities. In contrast, data obtained from medical and biomedical researches …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Voice over IP (VoIP) is one of the fastest growing telecommunicaiton market today. However with great popularity comes greater security risk. When we communicate over the Internet we expose our identity to all the prying eyes, even if we do not want to. Even though VoIP data can be secured by using encryption, sometimes the relationships between users can be sensitive. To provide stronger privacy for these users, we propose anonymous VoIP (aVoIP) - a means to secure user privacy in VoIP. The biggest challenge in introducing anonymity to VoIP system is in providing acceptable Quality of Service (QoS). Users …
Temporal Potential Function Approach For Path Planning In Dynamic Environments, Vamsikrishna Gopikrishna
Temporal Potential Function Approach For Path Planning In Dynamic Environments, Vamsikrishna Gopikrishna
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
A Dynamic environment is one in which either the obstacles or the goal or both are in motion. In most of the current research, robots attempting to navigate in dynamic environments use reactive systems. Although reactive systems have the advantage of fast execution and low overheads, the tradeoff is in performance in terms of the path optimality. Often, the robot ends up tracking the goal, thus following the path taken by the goal, and deviates from this strategy only to avoid a collision with an obstacle it may encounter. In a path planner, the path from the start to the …
Adapting Harmonic Function Path Planning: To Reflect User Motion Preferences, Giles John D'Silva
Adapting Harmonic Function Path Planning: To Reflect User Motion Preferences, Giles John D'Silva
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Every human in the real world has a unique motion preference while moving to achieve a given task. These preferences could be expressed by moving in a straight line, following the wall along a corridor, avoiding sharp turns, preferring hard flat surfaces over damp uneven surfaces, choosing the shortest path to the goal or by giving a high priority towards safety by maintaining a definite distance from obstacles. To automatically incorporate user preferences into motion planning we could extract the trajectories taken by the user to achieve a task in a given local vironment and attempt to use them in …
Texas And The Good Roads Movement: 1895 To 1948, Karl E. Wallace
Texas And The Good Roads Movement: 1895 To 1948, Karl E. Wallace
History Theses - Archive
The Good Roads Movement in America grew directly out of concerns over the debilitating effects of rural isolation. However, as each state faced its own unique challenges to the building and maintenance of roads, the early movement reflected broad regional differences. In Texas, the breadth of its borders, the scattered and uneven distribution of its population, and numerous historically rooted prejudices towards the proper role of government defined its differences. Even after the need for good roads had become undeniable, and roads advocacy was galvanized into a national movement, the social and political divisions that existed within Texas would prevent …
Thermal Effects And Analysis On Analog Integrated Circuit Design, Ardasheir Sayek Rahman
Thermal Effects And Analysis On Analog Integrated Circuit Design, Ardasheir Sayek Rahman
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Analog circuit design is an art of circuit designing. With technology becoming more advance and size of devices shrinking, circuit designing has becoming a real chance for the designers to meet up the demands in the market. Density of device transistor is rapidly increasing leading to thermal runaway issues and increasing operational speed of the transistors. Thus transistors are more sensitive to temperature changes, therefore requiring a more sensitive and accurate modeling of the thermal effects of the device as well as its adjacent devices. This research is on the thermal modeling of dielectric bipolar junction devices. It looks into …

During the 2004 hurricane season, four successive storms struck Central Florida causing catastrophic damage to crops and displacing close to 195,000 migrant and seasonal workers. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this thesis examines how government agencies and NGOs respond to such natural disasters by reaching out to Latino immigrant workers and families in Wimauma, Florida, and the diverse ways in which the immigrant community itself organized to confront the needs and problems brought about by these disasters. I pay particular attention to the role of Mexican immigrants’ kinship and social networks in developing adaptive strategies during times of stress and to …

Not My Father's Game: Immigration, Major League Baseball And The Dominican Republic, Marylyn Koble
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
Since the 1980's the number of Latino players, specifically, Dominicans, on major and minor league baseball teams has increased significantly. This demographic shift is due, in large part, to Major League Baseball (MLB) teams actively recruiting and developing Dominican players via the Dominican academy system. This thesis focuses on the process through which Dominican minor league baseball players are made into commodities by the global corporation of MLB. I examine the experiences of Dominican players as both baseball commodities and immigrants, comparing the challenges they face acculturating to American life with other Dominican immigrants in the North Texas area. A …

The Verbs Of Esther: A Discourse Analysis Of A Post-Exilic Text, Jill Lynn Riepe
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The Verbs of Esther: A Discourse Analysis of a Post-Exilic Text seeks to describe the narrative main clause verbs, the quotation formula verbs, and the verbs in quotations found in the text of Esther. These verbs provide key information about the discourse structure of the text. While there are several examples of discourse studies in pre-exilic Biblical Hebrew, there are only a few in post-exilic Biblical Hebrew and none using the text of Esther. The analysis depends on the theoretical backing of Longacre and Miller. While many of their findings and analysis remain true for this post-exilic text, there are …
(Im)Politeness In Casual Conversations Among Female Mandarin Speakers: A Practice-Based Perspective, Hui-Yen Wang
(Im)Politeness In Casual Conversations Among Female Mandarin Speakers: A Practice-Based Perspective, Hui-Yen Wang
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The fact that people have the choice to use different words and attitudes to convey messages of various significance has been attributed to politeness concerns. However, what constitutes politeness varies from culture to culture and person to person. Therefore, a universal definition for what politeness is does not seem plausible. Furthermore, using the term `politeness' to indicate the study of all kinds of linguistic behavior is problematic because `politeness' seems to exclude behavior that is inappropriate, aggressive or rude. To provide a more comprehensive account of politeness, this research draws upon the notion of "(im)politeness" (Watts, 2003) to account for …

Archaeology And Nationalism : The Trojan Legend In Etruria, Valeria Forte
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
In this study, the role of archaeology in relation to national identity formation will be analyzed in one of the most debated archaeological subjects in the western world, the case of Etruscan origins. This study will demonstrate how through history the Etruscan legend has permeated the political reality at many levels and how this legend of provenience has been used to promote the formation of national identity and unified mythical ethnic origins. The ultimate purpose of this study is to demonstrate that what is accepted today as solid and objective cultural reality of the past might have been fluid expressions …

The article presents several theories relative to the nature of matter. The quantum theory of German theoretical physicist Max Planck proposes that the energy of a vibrating atom was related to its frequency. Albert Einstein's quantum theory of light hypothesizes that light itself had an energy that was directly proportional to its frequency. Danish physicist Niels Bohr develops an equation that could help explain the lines that appeared in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom.

Surficial failures are occurring frequently on the slopes of earthfill dams which are predominantly rainfall induced. Desiccation cracks form on the slope surface during dry environment which accelerates infiltration during rainfall. Infiltration causes increase of pore water pressures and saturation of soil mass in top layer resulting in surficial failures. Numerous surficial failures occurred on the slope of earthfill dams maintained by The United States Army Corps. of Engineers. The current research is undertaken at the University of Texas at Arlington with an objective of exploring the best field stabilization method to mitigate these surficial failures. Two sites, Joe Pool Dam …

3-Fluorothiophene is a small molecule and the known syntheses for this molecule are far from being straight forward and suffer from many drawbacks such as low yield, long synthetic procedures and the use of expensive or dangerous fluorinating agents. The synthesis of 3-fluorothiophene was accomplished in four steps and 49% overall yield by a very convenient method. 2,5-Dibromo-3-fluorothiophene was prepared in essentially one step synthesis involving a decarboxylation-bromination reaction. Both 3-fluorothiophene and 2,5-dibromo-3-fluorothiophene are potential monomers for a wide variety of fluorinated polythiophenes. Fluoroalkyl thiophene monomers, dimers and trimers were prepared. 3-Heptanoylthiophene is a key intermediate in the synthesis of …
