Efficient Learning For The Poor: New Insights Into Literacy Acquisition For Children, Helen Abadzi Jan 2008

Efficient Learning For The Poor: New Insights Into Literacy Acquisition For Children, Helen Abadzi

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

Reading depends on the speed of visual recognition and capacity of short-term memory. To understand a sentence, the mind must read it fast enough to capture it within the limits of the short-term memory. This means that children must attain a minimum speed of fairly accurate reading to understand a passage. Learning to read involves “tricking” the brain into perceiving groups of letters as coherent words. This is achieved most efficiently by pairing small units consistently with sounds rather than learning entire words. To link the letters with sounds, explicit and extensive practice is needed; the more complex the spelling …

Analysis Of Police Officer Perceptions And Attitudes Regarding Vehicle Pursuits, Christopher G. Cook

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study was to analyze differences in the way that officers respond to pursuit scenarios. This project used a survey questionnaire to gather responses from participants who read a chase scenario and considered the type of offense and risk factors to the public as they answered. Similarities and differences were analyzed in relation to demographical data regarding gender and years of experience as a police officer. Officers and supervisors were asked to respond to each scenario how they actually felt, without regard to current institutional constraints such as policies and procedures.

Weaving segments are categorized based on weaving length, configuration, number of lanes, free flow speed and weaving ratio. All these parameters affect weaving capacity. One of the objectives of this research was to extend Phong Thanh Vo's dissertation and study the relation between weaving capacity of two-sided type C on freeways with four lanes and any potential variables (mainalane demand, entrance ramp demand, exit ramp demand and weaving ratio). Micro-simulation has been used in order to analyze different capacity scenarios and the VISSIM calibrated model by Vo was used. Also, the effect of each of the VISSIM calibration parameters on …

The Effect Of Displacement Control Loading Histories On Genral Connecting Surfaces Using Finite Element Analysis, Sanjog Chandrakant Sabnis Jan 2008

The Effect Of Displacement Control Loading Histories On Genral Connecting Surfaces Using Finite Element Analysis, Sanjog Chandrakant Sabnis

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Displacement loading history provided by the AISC Seismic Provision 2002 is commonly used for experimental testing and analytical modeling of beam-to-column steel connection to stimulate the seismic effect. However, the basis for the above loading history is not documented in the literature. Thus, this study developed 25 cyclic load cases by varying the frequency and magnitude of the AISC-2002 loading within a predefined envelops. The 25 load cases are obtained from five different load sets in which the concept of uniform and non-uniform frequencies and amplitude are utilized. All the load cases are limited to the displacement equivalent to the …

Clay Mineral Quantification Using Gravemetric Analysis, Sarwenaj Ashraf Jan 2008

Clay Mineral Quantification Using Gravemetric Analysis, Sarwenaj Ashraf

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The current procedure used by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to determine the type of stabilizer is based mainly on the Plasticity Index (PI) and the gradation of the soil. This method of stabilization does not always work because two soils with the same PIs can have very different shrink/swell potential, plastic limits or liquid limits, hence their behavior may be very different. This is mainly due to the fact that two soils that have the same PI can have very different clay mineral composition. Montmorillonite and kaolinite are the clay minerals that cause swelling/shrinking in soils.Chittoori (2008) had …

Negotiated Authorship: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Professional Writer Job Postings, Jill Dickerson Jan 2008

Negotiated Authorship: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Professional Writer Job Postings, Jill Dickerson

English Theses - Archive

This qualitative study (a rhetorical/discourse analysis) explores the genre of job postings, particularly postings for writing-related jobs in the financial services sector, to determine how words like "author" and "writer" are used in the discourse community of a financial corporation (a pseudo-scientific "data"-driven organization). If one assumes there is a power struggle between the creative authorship (authority) of the Writer (Author) and the ideological authority of the Corporation, how does the Corporation negotiate with a consenting, potential employee/Writer? The space for this negotiation begins in the job posting.

Opinions In Context: Reconsidering Endoxa In Aristotle's On Rhetoric, Kyle Simpler Jan 2008

Opinions In Context: Reconsidering Endoxa In Aristotle's On Rhetoric, Kyle Simpler

English Theses - Archive

In On Rhetoric, Aristotle describes rhetoric as an ability of seeing the available means of persuasion. Rather than suggesting that rhetoric is persuasive discourse, Aristotle presents it as a skill one utilizes to assess the situation at hand in order to discover what might prove persuasive. Much of this potentially persuasive material comes from opinions; however, Aristotle's presentation of opinion in On Rhetoric shows a clear departure from those offered by his predecessors such as Plato and Gorgias. Rather than considering general opinion (doxa), as did the earlier Greeks thinkers, Aristotle concentrates primarily on reputable opinions (endoxa) pertaining to the …

Helmholtz's Theorem Based Parametric Non-Rigid Image Registration, Hsi-Yue S. Hsiao Jan 2008

Helmholtz's Theorem Based Parametric Non-Rigid Image Registration, Hsi-Yue S. Hsiao

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Helmholtz's theorem states that, with suitable boundary condition, a vector field is completely determined if both of its divergence and curl are specified everywhere. Based on this, we developed a new parametric non-rigid image registration algorithm. Instead of the displacements of regular control grid points, the curl and divergence at each grid point are employed as the parameters. This leads to a very simple mathematical model - two Poisson equations in 2-D or three Poisson equations in 3-D which will be used to solve for the displacement field. The similarity measure is sum of squared difference. And multi-resolution is applied …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Routing With Limited Risk, Siriwat Visoldilokpun Jan 2008

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Routing With Limited Risk, Siriwat Visoldilokpun

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Due to safety and uninhabitable surrounding environments, long range Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become an increasingly popular option in both scientific and military applications. With troubling oil prices, a logistic planner requires an efficient method to identify an optimal routing solution. The solution should not only optimize the bottom line objective but must also control variations in an operation. We study the UAV routing problem with limited risk (URPR) in which the considered risk is a fuel burn variance caused by wind variation. The URPR determines the optimal route that minimizes total expected fuel burn to visit all assigned targets …

Duality And The Problem Of Moral Self-Awareness In Dostoevsky's Dvoinik (The Double), Lonny Harrison Jan 2008

Duality And The Problem Of Moral Self-Awareness In Dostoevsky's Dvoinik (The Double), Lonny Harrison

Modern Languages Faculty Publications - Archive

This dissertation investigates the problem of duality as it relates to the moral situation of the protagonist of F. M. Dostoevsky's novella Dvoinik (The Double, 1846). Bearing the cultural and literary heritage as well as contemporary social realities of mid-nineteenth century Russia steadily in mind, I analyse the duality motif in Dvoinik in terms of the protagonist's self-consciousness [samosoznanie] and moral perceptions. In particular, the moral ideas that underpin his self-definitions are products of what I refer to as moral selfawareness. In the course of my analysis, I interrogate the modulations of moral reasoning in the mind of the protagonist …

Ageism And The Contact Hypothesis: The Effects Of Work-Related And Non Work-Related Contact On Age-Related Stereotypes, Katherine Elizabeth Sullivan

Psychology Theses - Archive

Ageism can be defined as positive or negative attitudes toward a group based solely on their age. The present study examined the effect of the contact hypothesis (Allport, 1958) on ageism. Specifically, work-related and non work-related contact effects on both general ageism and ageism in the workplace were assessed. Study 1 examined the effect of the quantity of contact on ageism, while Study 2 examined the Quality X Quantity interaction of situation-specific contact on ageism. Ageism was measured using the previously developed Comprehensive Scale of Ageism (Tipton, 2005), while ageism in the workplace was measured by Ringenbach's (1994) Age Stereotypes …

The present study was an on-line correlational survey study of 377 UT-Arlington undergraduates. It examined what personality variables predicted university-level academic performance over and above conscientiousness, after also controlling for gender and previous academic ability (that is, high school rank and SAT scores). I found that conscientiousness predicted university GPA after controlling for gender and previous academic ability (high school rank and SAT score). However, some of predictive validity of conscientiousness proved to be attributable to more specific predictors such as academic locus of control and self-expectancy (H1). Moreover, conscientiousness and self-motivation compensated for each other in predicting university GPA …

Hybrid Video Coding Design With Variable Size Integer Transforms And Structural Similarity, Att Kruafak Jan 2008

Hybrid Video Coding Design With Variable Size Integer Transforms And Structural Similarity, Att Kruafak

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This research proposes a block-based video codec design with two objectives. The first goal is to propose a method for intraframe that improves the rate-distortion (peak signal-to-noise ratio versus bit rate) of a fixed-size transform encoder. The proposed method uses three integer transform sizes (4x4), (8x8), and (16x16). The codec also adopts H.264-like spatial prediction to intraframe encoding. For simplicity of the design, Huffman variable-length code is used as entropy encoding. For intraframe encoding, the simulations show rate-distortion improvement over JPEG and JPEG2000. In some test sequences, the simulations also show improvement over H.264 (baseline profile at low complexity mode …

The thesis presents an new image decomposition for feature extraction, which is called the pyramidal dual-tree directional filter bank (PDTDFB). The image representation has an overcomplete ratio of less than 8/3 and uses a separable filter bank implementation structure. We discuss how to utilize both magnitude and phase information obtained from the PDTDFB for the purpose of texture image retrieval. The relative phase, which is the difference of phases between two adjacent complex coefficients, has a linear relationship with the angle of dominant orientation within a subband. This information is incorporated to form a new feature vector called CDFB-RP. Another …
